Abstract

293,637. Jensen, C. A., (Nordberg Manufacturing Co.). Dec. 14, 1927. Plant for laying track.-In a trackshifting machine which, when fastened to the rails, lifts the track and machine by depressing a spud upon the bed of the track, the spud carriage 91, Figs. 1, 3, is moved transversely of the car by means driven from the main shaft 95 which actuates the raising and lowering gear. The spud 94 is carried by a bar 90 having a rack- and-pinion engagement with a shaft 120 mounted in the carriage 91. A hand-wheel 129 moves a sector 128 and yoke 124 so as to tilt the bar 90. Shaft 120 is coupled by worm-gear 119, 121 with a shaft 118 driven by chain 116 from a sprocket wheel 115 clutched at 95<1> to the main shaft 95. The carriage 91 is traversed by a screw-threaded shaft 146 carrying a sprocket wheel 147 around which is p:voted an arm 149<1> carrying an idler sprocket 148 and chain, depression of the arm 149<1> by foot-pressure causing the chain to engage a sprocket 151 on the shaft 95. The shaft 95 drives a sprocket 22 on a car axle through reduction gear 102, 103 and clutch 106, while it is itself driven from shaft 16 by forward or reverse gear 96, 97 and clutch 101, shaft 16 being driven by chain 20 from the motor shaft 15. Clutch 106 is operated by link 111 from lever 111<3>, Fig. 5, and a handle 110 which can engage either lever 111<3> or lever 111<5> connected by links 137, 136, Fig. 1, to clutch 95<1> for the spud carriage, a three-way spring retaining-cam engaging link 111. Link 136 engages a brake-lever acting on sprocket wheel 115 when clutch 95<1> is disengaged. Clutch 101 is operated by handle 112 and a link 113 which is also coupled to a lever 112<1>, Fig. 6, engaging a two-way spring retaming-cam 112<2> and having an extension 112<3> coacting with a dog 112<4> on a shaft 155, so that clutch 101 can only be moved to varv the direction when shaft 155 is rotated to declutch the motor by rod 161 and apply the brake. This position is obtained by a spring 159, Fig. 4, engaging a pedal' 188 linked to a crank 172 which engages an abutment 176 carried by the shaft 155. The pedal 188 also carries an arm 170 fulcrummed at 180 to one end of a brake band 158 engaging a drum 157 on main shaft 95, the other end engaging a rod 182 pivoted to the arm 170. Springs 184, 186 tend to release the band from the drum. This release is positively effected by a pedal 156 on shaft 155, the motorclutch being at the same time engaged, so that pedal 156 must be held depressed during rotation of shaft 95. The rail-gripping mechanism is described in Specification 295,922, and comprises pairs of crossed clamps 45, 46, Fig 3, pivoted on a rod 49 and carried by toggle links 43, 44 from floating beams 40, 41. The rods 49 are mounted on rods 50, 51 pivoted at one end to the car and connected at the other end by chains 70 to lifter-bars 72, Fig. 13, pivoted to the arm 74 of a hand-lever 75. The beams 40, 41 have a. pin-and-slot connection 64 with a curved link 63 carried by an arm 62 of a hand-lever 61 which is retained in working position by a spring latch 65. Lever 75, when moved to break the toggle and free the clamps, is held in that position by an arm 78 engaging a spring latch 79. If lever 61 is moved to raise the clamps while lever 75 is held by latch 79 to keep the toggles open, the lever 75 will be moved still further by a projection 61<1> on lever 61 so that the clamps are held clear of obstructions while the car is travelling on the track. Lever 32, Figs. 1, 3, engages a quadrant rack 35 and operates a cable 27 which rotates a shaft 25 carrying eccentrics in engagement with the brake shoes 24 applied to the front wheels of the car.
