Abstract

293,020. A. C. Spark Plug Co., (Assignees of Gregg, D.). June 30, 1927, [Convention date]. Lever-actuated pumps; diaphragm pumps.- In carburettors wherein air is supplied by a supercharger and fuel is fed to the float chamber by a pump, the supercharger pressure is transmitted to the float chamber and to both sides of the pump. A supercharger 11, Fig. 1, forces air through a pipe 16 to a carburettor 12 having a float chamber 13 and a throttle valve 20. The pipe 16 has a branch 17 controlled by a valve the spindle 18 of which is connected by linkage 19 to the throttle 20. Fuel enters a strainer 23 at 22, Fig. 2, passes through filtering material 24, valve 25 and duct 26 to the chamber 56 of a diaphragm pump the delivery from which occurs through a valve 57 and pipe 55, Fig. 1, to the float chamber 13. The diaphragm 28 is held between plates 29, 30 secured by a nut 31 to a rod 32 downwardly actuated by a cam 42 through linkage 41, 35, 34, but actuated during the pumping stroke by a spring 48 which causes the stroke to vary with the pressure in the chamber 56. A pipe 50, Fig. 1, has branches 53, 54 for transmitting the air pressure to the float chamber 13 and to the under side of the pump diaphragm, Fig. 2. The air pressure is already transmitted to the upper side of the diaphragm by the pipe 55, Fig. 1, and its transmission to the under side balances the diaphragm in respect of such pressure and permits it to be returned with the full force of its loading means.
