Abstract

288,348. Salerni, P. M. Oct. 5, 1926. Turning.- In a grinding-machine having a pair of oppositely movable grinding-wheels for grinding hollow-ground and other razor blades, &c., means are provided for advancing the grinding-wheels to compensate for reduction in diameter due to wear and dressing, and when the wheels are thus advanced, dressing-tools are advanced to a different extent so that the wheels are dressed in the advanced position. As applied to hollow-grinding razor blades, the machine consists of series of grinding-wheels 2 mounted on spindles 19 in supports 3 movable to compensate for wear by a screwed shaft 21. The dressing-tools, one for each wheel 2, are carried by arms 7 fixed to rods 6 reciprocable and angularly movable in the supports 3 and having pivotal connection to a bar 9 held against endwise movement by rollers 10. When the blocks are fed towards each other to advance the wheels 2, the rods 6 also move towards each other and the arms 7 carrying the dressing-tools move with these to a greater extent owing to the pivotal connections with the rod 9; the dressing-tools are then reciprocated by toothed sectors 31 and teeth 32 on the rods 6 to dress the wheels. The movements are derived from a rod 26, which is lifted by cam surfaces on a cam 24 through a roller 25, the rod carrying a pawl 28 engaging a ratchet wheel on a shaft 30 having thereon a worm 23 which drives a worm wheel 22 on the screw 21; the rod 26 also rocks a shaft 33 carrying the sectors 31. The dressing diamond 8 is carried by a screw entering a plug 60 adjustable on the arm 7 by a screw 63 and held in adjusted position by a screw 62. In a modification, for grinding the edge of a strip, the dressing-tools are carried by arms pivoted on the grinding-wheel supports and have bars thereon engaging between rollers mounted on fixed axes.
