Abstract

287,971. Ball, F. L., Moulton, F., and Lead Wool Co., Ltd. Jan. 1, 1927. Spigot - and - socket joints held by caulking and the like.-A pipe spigot-andsocket joint is made fluidtight by a packing which comprises a supporting ring 5 of spun yarn, positioned around the inner end of the spigot 2, an intermediate ring 3 of vulcanized rubber, and an outer ring 4 of caulked metal, such as lead wool, which expands the rubber ring into engagement with the spigot 2 and socket 1 by compression against the supporting ring. Alternatively both the rings 5, 3 may comprise an inner ring of spun yarn or tow and an outer ring of lead wool. Various forms of rubber rings are described.
