Abstract

Machinery, utilizing inertia to obtain movements in.-Apparatus for transmitting energy in the form of asymmetrical mechanical oscillations comprises an oscillatory member mounted on springs which on deflection from normal in either direction bear against asymmetrical bearing surfaces in combination with driving means therefor and means whereby the drive is yieldingly transmitted thereto. Harmonic or inharmonic oscillations are produced composed of long and short semi-periods. such as indicated by the kinetic and potential energy curves, V, P, in Fig. 1, by the use of blads springs b, Fig. 5, the ends of which are clamped between asymmetrical curved abutments d so that when set in oscillation they have greater freedom in one direction than the other. As applied to jigging conveyers or troughs for feeding forward material in bulk, a series of trough sections a, coupled by screw connections or other means, are supported on a series of obliquely disposed springs b carried by a main body c which may be built up of sheet metal sections or lattice girders and provided at intervals with anchoring spurs. The springs b may be welded at e besides being riveted to the bearing abutments d which are bolted to the main body and trough and are connected together by fish plates f. The trough may be driven by an electric motor M, Fig. 8, acting through an adjustable crank g, and connecting rod h, and mounted on swinging supports p so that, in starting, the motor swings to and fro with its supports until the reaction effects on the trough have become stabilized. The action may be. regulated by means of an adjustable auxiliary weight G. Alternatively the drive may be transmitted from a fixed motor or engine through yielding transmission means such as described in Specifications 188,633 and 237,934. To enable two lengths of trough to reciprocate oppositely to different extents their adjacent ends a<1>, a<2>, Fig. 6, may be coupled by links v to the ends of a lever u fulcrummed centrally on a support arm k which is pivoted at its lower end m to the main frame or base and carries an adjustable weight w. Alter. natively, the links v may be elastic or other yielding connections may be employed. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also arrangements wherein the asymmetrical elastic constraint of the oscillatory member is effected by rubber buffers, air cushions, gravity &c. German Specification 424,921 is referred to. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
