280,934. Silica Gel Corporation, (Assignees of Miller, E. B., and Connolly, G. C.). Nov. 19, 1926, [Convention date]. Refrigerating, vacuum systems for.-An adsorbent for water vapour particularly useful in refrigerating plants where a refrigerant such as brine is employed, comprises a solid porous gel capable of adsorbing at least 10 per cent of its weight of water vapour at 30‹ C. and 22 mm. of mercury partial pressure, impregnated with a dehydrating agent, e.g. sulphuric acid, metaphosphoric acid, copper sulphate, aluminium sulphate, magnesium sulphate. The gel is preferably silica but may be tungstic oxide, titanium oxide, stannic oxide, aluminium oxide, or the like. The silica is impregnated with a solution of the agent either before or after the dehydration of the hydrogel and the impregnated material is then heated to dehydrate and activate it.
