Abstract

269,494. O'Hara, E. April 16, 1926, [Convention date]. Offset machines; intaglio-plate printing.- Impressions are printed on brittle articles of glass, china, &c. from engraved steel dies by employing the offset method of printing. A steel die 30 is secured to a holder 28 which is reciprocated under an inking-roller 37 and wiping- band 38 and returned to the position shown in Fig. 1. A plunger 12 is then reciprocated by an eccentric 14, and presses a gelatine or like pad 26 into contact with the inked die 30, and produces an offset impression on the pad 26. This pad is carried by a spring-pressed piston 16 mounted on the plunger. During this printing of the offset impression, the article to be printed is placed on a holder 40 maintained by a spring 36 in contact with the die-holder. The eccentric then raises the plunger 12 and a pinion 35 correlated therewith removes the die-holder 28 and brings the article to be printed under the pad 26. A dwell is given to the plunger 12 and the die-holder 28, and during this dwell the article is printed by depressing the piston 16 by hand operation of a bifurcated lever 24, Fig. 1, engaging pins 22 projecting from the piston, or by a hand-operated lever 43, Fig. 8, fitted with a gear-sector 42 engaging a rack 41 on piston 16.
