Abstract
268,622. Richter, J. A. Aug. 4, 1926. Cotters.-A machine for making tapered pins or for producing cylindrical enlargements on cylindrical blanks comprises a number of grooving tools which are pressed radially into an axially moving blank to cause an outward flow of metal, the radial movement being variable according to the degree and direction of the taper required. The bed 10 of a press carries a base 11 formed with a tool-holder 12 which is bored centrally at 14 and has a number of radial grooves 15. Sliding members 18 fitted in the radial grooves carry hardened steel discs 16 and may be forced radially inwards towards the blank 45 by means of levers 24 which are pivoted at 25 to lugs on the holder, outward movement of the levers being limited by adjustable abutment screws 29. The upper ends of the levers carry rollers 48 engaging adjustable cam strips 39 which are fitted in recesses in a clamping-ring 37 secured to the press-head. The head carries a central feed member 44 and on the descent of the press-head the blank is forced through a guide 30 while the tools are fed gradually inwards by the cams 39 to produce radial grooves of gradually increasing depth in the blank. The levers are returned by spring plungers 21 and the finished workpiece, having the form shown in Fig. 10, passes through the central bore 14. In a modification, Fig. 3, the levers are pivoted at 56 above the tools and the cams have outwardly disposed surfaces 59. In another modification, the cams have curved surfaces which produce a pin shaped as shown in Fig. 7. By further modification of the cam surfaces, other forms of pins may be produced. In another modification, Fig. 11, for producing cylindrical enlargements 161 on a blank 146, by forming grooves 160, Fig. 14, the grooving-tools are mounted on shafts 117 carried in bearing-plates 118 in radial openings 115 of the column 112. Rollers 121 are also mounted on the shafts 117 and the blank passes through a central guide 123. The head comprises a member 125 fitted with a number of tool-actuating slides 129 which can move on spherical seatings 130 in pivot bushings 132. The lower ends of the cam slides are adjustably secured to a ring 138, adjustment being effected by wedges 141. Each cam slide carries two cams 150 supported by pins 152 and having one or more operative surfaces 153. On descent of the head, an adjustable pin 145 feeds the work past the tools and the surfaces 153 coact with the rollers 121 to press the tools against the work. In a further modification, Fig. 16, the disc tools are replaced by straight-edged tools 170 and the blank 175 is supported on an abutment 176. This form of machine produces an enlargement 184, Fig. 18, having sharp corners. By lowering the abut. ment 176 more than one such enlargement may be formed on the same shaft.
