Abstract

266,596. Mattson, G. W. July 15, 1926. Twisting wires together.-In a tool for twisting and cutting wires for closing the mouths of sacks, bags &c., of the type comprising a spirally slotted shaft carrying a pair of pivoted and spring closed jaws, rotated by a sleeve longitudinally movable in the shaft; the jaws are positively retained in their closed position by means which are removed after twisting is completed. The jaws 18, 19, which are provided with dulled edges 20<a> and cutting edges 20 are mounted on a pivot 17 on a member 16 and normally closed by a spring 21. The member 16 is screwed to a helically slotted shaft 7 provided at its rear end with a flanged bush 8. A hollow handle 1 has secured thereto a head 3 having studs 4, 5 engaging the slots in the shaft so that on drawing back the handle the shaft is rotated to twist the wires when placed between the edges 20<a> and to cut the wires separately after twisting when placed between the edges 20. The handle is returned by a spring 14. The jaws are normally held closed positively by the head 22 of a rod 9 which is pressed forward by a spring 24 and is provided with a disc 12 having pins 11 passing through holes in the flange 10 of the bush 8. A stop collar 15 is arranged in the handle, which, at the end of the twisting operation engages the pins 11 so as to remove the rod 9 from the jaws and allow the tool to be removed.
