According to various, but not necessarily all, examples of the disclosure there may be provided examples as claimed in the appended claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
For a better understanding of various examples that are useful for understanding the detailed description, reference will now be made by way of example only to the accompanying drawing in which: Fig. 1 illustrates a cross sectional view of an apparatus; and Fig. 2 illustrates a perspective view of the apparatus of Fig. 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
As illustrated in the figures, examples of the disclosure provide a bin deodorizer apparatus 10. The apparatus 10 comprises a first part 12 and a second part 14. The first part 12 comprises a permeable structure 16. The permeable structure 16 of the first part 12 comprises activated carbon. The second part 14 comprises a permeable structure 18. The permeable structure 18 of the second part 14 comprises activated carbon and potassium permanganate.
The first and second parts 12, 14 may be discrete separate parts of the apparatus 10. The first and second parts 12, 14 may be considered respective layers of the apparatus 10.
The respective permeable structures 16, 18 of the first and second parts 12, 14 have openings that permit air to pass therethrough. Activated carbon, which is present in the first and second parts 12, 14, adsorbs odours and gaseous pollutants from the air, for instance, which is circulating within the bin in which the apparatus 10 is located.
The odours and gaseous pollutants adsorbed by activated carbon include, for example, hydrogen sulphide and methane.
A combination of activated carbon and potassium permanganate removes a wider range of odours and gaseous pollutants than activated carbon alone. Accordingly, odours and gaseous pollutants not removed by the first part 12 may be removed by the second part 14. In use, apparatus 10 according to the disclosure therefore remove a wider range of odours and gaseous pollutants from air circulating within a bin than, for example, conventional apparatus comprising only activated carbon. Furthermore, the combination of activated carbon and potassium permanganate is particularly effective in the removal of hydrogen sulphide.
In some examples, the volume of the first part 12 is greater than the volume of the second part 14. It has been surprisingly found that a wide range of odours and gaseous pollutants can be removed from air circulating within a bin using apparatus 10 in which the second part 14 has a relatively small volume compared to the first part 12. In plan view the first and second parts 12, 14 have substantially identical dimensions. However, the width of the first part 12 is greater than the width of the second part 14. For example, the width of the first part may be 8 mm and the width of the second part may be 1.2 mm.
In some examples, the permeable structure 16 of the first part 12 is an open cell foam. The open cell foam may be formed substantially from starch. The first part 12 may be substantially block shaped with dimensions of 50 mm x 70 mm x 80mm.
In some examples, the permeable structure 18 of the second part 14 is a nonwoven structure. The non-woven structure may be a non-woven fabric. The non-woven structure may comprise polymer fibres.
In some examples, the respective permeable structures 16, 18 of the first and second parts 12, 14 are impregnated with activated carbon. The activated carbon may be derived from coconut, bamboo or charcoal.
In some examples of the disclosure, the first and second parts 12, 14 are bound together by a web adhesive 20. The web adhesive 20 is permeable, and therefore comprises openings that permit air to pass therethrough. Circulating air may therefore pass through the web adhesive 20 between the first and second parts 12, 14.
In some examples, the apparatus comprises a base 22. The base 22 may be bound to the first part by an adhesive 26. The base 22 may be provided on a side of the first part 12 opposite the second part 14. The base may be formed from a transparent polymer. The base 22 may comprise a lip 24 which extends beyond the first and second portions 12, 14. The lip 24 is integral with the base 22.
The apparatus may comprise attachment means 28 for attachment of the apparatus 10 to an in use inside surface of a bin. The attachment means 28 comprises an adhesive layer 30 and a removeable cover 32 overlying the adhesive layer 30. The removeable cover may be silicate one sided biodegradable paper. The attachment means 28 may be provided on the base 22.
In some examples, the apparatus 10 is formed from biodegradable materials, and is therefore biodegradable. In such examples, all the described materials are biodegradable. Accordingly, the first and second parts 12, 14, the web adhesive 20, the lever portion 22 comprising lip 24, the adhesive 26 and the attachment means 28 comprising adhesive layer 30 and removeable cover 32 are all biodegradable.
In use, the cover 32 of the attachment means 28 is removed to reveal the adhesive layer 30. The cover 32 may be readily peeled off. The apparatus 10 is then positioned on an in use inside surface of a bin, for example on the inside surface of a bin lid, by contacting the adhesive layer 30 with the surface. The apparatus 10 is then available to remove odours and gaseous pollutants from the air which is circulating within the bin. When it is time to replace the apparatus 10, a user may urge the apparatus 10 away from the surface using the lip 24 as a handle.
Examples of the disclosure provide a number of advantages as detailed above.
Although embodiments of the present invention have been described in the preceding paragraphs with reference to various examples, it should be appreciated that modifications to the examples given can be made without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed. For example, activated carbon may be derived from any suitable organic source.
Features described in the preceding description may be used in combinations other than the combinations explicitly described.
Although functions have been described with reference to certain features, those functions may be performable by other features whether described or not.
Although features have been described with reference to certain embodiments, those features may also be present in other embodiments whether described or not.
The term "comprise" is used in this document with an inclusive not an exclusive meaning. That is any reference to X comprising Y indicates that X may comprise only one Y or may comprise more than one Y. If it is intended to use "comprise" with an exclusive meaning then it will be made clear in the context by referring to "comprising only one..." or by using "consisting".
In this brief description, reference has been made to various examples. The description of features or functions in relation to an example indicates that those features or functions are present in that example. The use of the term "example" or "for example" or "may" in the text denotes, whether explicitly stated or not, that such features or functions are present in at least the described example, whether described as an example or not, and that they can be, but are not necessarily, present in some of or all other examples. Thus "example", "for example" or "may" refers to a particular instance in a class of examples. A property of the instance can be a property of only that instance or a property of the class or a property of a subclass of the class that comprise some but not all of the instances in the class. It is therefore implicitly disclosed that features described with reference to one example but not with reference to another example, can where possible be used in that other example but does not necessarily have to be used in that other example.
Whilst endeavoring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
