Abstract

Type-lever machines.-In machines of the kind having a detachable typecarrying unit, the frame is provided with runners or their equivalent which guide and support the detachable unit during its withdrawal from or insertion into the stationary portion of the machine. As shown in Fig. 1, the frame of the machine comprises upper and lower castings 1, 2 secured together by bolts 3. A top plate 4 is secured to the upper casting by screws 5. A runner 8, secured on each of the side walls 9 of the lower casting 2 by means of two adjustable eccentric studs 13, provides a bearing surface for two studs 10 on the adjacent side 7 of the detachable type-carrying unit, which is indicated diagrammatically. The runners are so shaped that when the type-carrying unit is in its normal position its base is substantially in alignment with the lower edge of the runners. The runners extend from near the rear wall 1 of the frame to a distance sufficient for the type-carrying unit to be moved forwardly into the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and, by curving the runners, the unit is simultaneously lowered free from obstructions. The inner ends of the runners are each formed with a V-shaped slot or stop to engage the rear studs 10 of the detachable unit and exert a wedging action thereon when in the operative position. Set-screws 18 bearing upon the ends of the runners hold them against longitudinal movement due to the impact of the detachable unit upon the V-shaped stop. The outward movement of the unit is controlled by spring latches 20 pivoted on the front bearing studs 10 of each of its side plates, and shaped so that their ends 25 are normally engaged by studs 19 which project inwardly from the runners 8. The latches are disengaged on the depression of fingerpieces 21. When the detachable unit is inserted in the machine cam projections 24 on the latches come into contact with the studs 19 and ride over them until the notched ends 25 of the latches engage them. The studs 19 are adjustably mounted upon eccentrics to compensate for irregularities between different interchangeable units.
