E-SIM PROVISIONING AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Technical Field
The present invention relates to the provisioning and management of e-SIMs.
Background
In recent years, embedded Subscriber Identity Modules (e-SIMs) have attracted growing interest. Much of this interest has been driven by the Internet of Things, in which many different types of device have mobile network connectivity. The traditional approach of a mobile network operator providing a Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) in physical form, pre-provisioned with the necessary credentials for using the mobile network of that mobile network operator or a mobile network for which the mobile network operator has agreed a roaming agreement, for insertion into a device is not convenient for devices which may not be readily accessible during their working lifetime. Accordingly, e-SIMs have been developed that involve a device having an embedded UICC (e-UICC) that can be remotely provisioned “over-the-air” with the necessary credentials, optionally together with application data provided by the mobile network operator. The data provisioned over-the-air is termed a profde.
The GSM Association is developing a GSMA Embedded SIM Remote Provisioning Architecture for the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) market, see for example GSM Association Official Document SGP.02 - Remote Provisioning Architecture for Embedded UICC Technical Specification v3.1, and for the consumer device market, see for example GSM Association Official Document SGP.21 - RSP Architecture v2.0. The content of both these GSM Association documents are hereby incorporated herein in their entirety by reference.
Summary
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided apparatus for facilitating the provision of profile data to an embedded UICC within a user device. The apparatus comprises a first platform for communication with at least one of an operational support system and a business support system associated with a first mobile network operator, a product database storing details of products offered by the first mobile network operator, and a second platform for communicating with a user device. In use, the apparatus receives details of available products from the first mobile network operator via the first platform and stores the received details in the product database. Subsequently, following receiving a request for a product from the user device via the second platform, the apparatus send details of at least one product stored in the product database to the user device via the second platform, and receives a purchase request for a product from the user device via the second platform. The apparatus sends a purchase request to the first mobile network operator via the first platform. In this way, the apparatus intermediates between the owner of the user device and the first mobile network operator.
The apparatus can receive product details from a plurality of mobile network operators, and send details of products from different mobile network operators to the user device. As such, the apparatus can be considered to be an eSIM marketplace.
The apparatus may be further operable, following the sending of the purchase request, to receive confirmation from the first mobile network operator of a purchase as a result of the purchase request via the first platform; and send confirmation to the user device via the second platform. The received confirmation from the first mobile network operator may comprise a link to a network location storing a profile corresponding to the purchased product, and the confirmation sent to the user device may comprise that link.
In embodiments of the invention, the embedded UICC is associated with a subscription from a second mobile phone operator, and the apparatus receives billing data from the first mobile phone operator in relation to usage of the product from the first mobile phone operator by the user device and sends billing data corresponding to the received billing data to the second mobile phone operator for settlement by the user of the user device. In this way, the apparatus intermediates between the first mobile network operator and the second mobile network operator to allow charges by the first mobile network operator to appear on a user subscription account with the second mobile network operator.
In embodiments, the first mobile phone operator operates a first public land mobile network in a first country and the second mobile phone operator operates a second public land mobile network in a second country different from the first country.
In such embodiments, there is an advantage to the user that the user the charges to the user are based on a local subscription in the first country but receives the charges from the existing mobile network operator in the second company. Such a local subscription is selected by the user of the user device and is likely to be significantly cheaper than any roaming agreement existing between the first mobile network operator and the second mobile network operator.
In another aspect, there is provided a user device having a wireless transceiver and an embedded UICC for enabling communication via a mobile phone network in accordance with a profile stored by the embedded UICC. The user device comprises processor-implementable instructions arranged to detect a country in which the mobile device is to be used, determine if a profile associated with a mobile phone operator in the detected country is available, and in the event that it is determined that a profile associated with a mobile phone operator in the detected country is not available, send a request to a remote apparatus for a product comprising a profile associated with a mobile phone operator in the detected country. In this way, when a user first arrives in a country, the user device can retrieve an eSIM profile local to that country.
In response to sending the product request, the processor-implementable instructions may receive details of at least one product from the remote apparatus and display details of the at least one product to a user of the user device. Following receipt of a user selection identifying a desired product, the user device sends a purchase request to the remote apparatus identifying the selected product. Following sending the purchase request, the user device receives a link to a network location for retrieving a profile corresponding to said purchased product, and retrieves the profile from said network location. The link may be received from said remote apparatus, or may be received in response to polling a discovery server. In embodiments, the user device retrieves said profile from a service management data preparation network entity.
The processor-implementable instructions may comprise part of a mobile phone application.
In a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of provisioning profile data to an embedded UICC within a user device utilising an eSIM marketplace, the method comprising:
the eSIM marketplace receiving details of available products from a first mobile network operator and storing the received details in the product database;
the user device sending a request for a product to the eSIM marketplace; in response to receipt of said request from the user device, the eSIM marketplace sending details of at least one product stored in the product database to the user device; in response to receiving said details, the user device displaying details of the at least one product to a user;
in response to a user selection of a desired product from said at least one product, the user device sending a purchase request for the desired product to the eSIM marketplace;
in response to receiving the purchase request from the user device, the eSIM marketplace sending a corresponding purchase request to the first mobile network operator; and providing a profile corresponding to the desired product to the user device.
The provision of the profile may comprise sending a link identifying a network location storing said profile to the user device; and the user device retrieving the profile from the identified network location.
Following the provisioning the profile to the user device, the user device can send and receive at least one of voice traffic and data traffic via the mobile network associated with the first mobile network provider. When the embedded UICC has a subscription with a second mobile network operator, the first mobile network may transmit billing data corresponding to use of said mobile network to the eSIM marketplace, and the eSIM marketplace may send corresponding billing data to the second mobile network operator for settlement by the user of the user device.
Further features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of preferred embodiments of the invention, given by way of example only, which is made with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Detailed Description
By way of example, a detailed embodiment will now be described which utilises the GSMA Embedded SIM Remote Provisioning Architecture for the consumer device market as specified in GSM Association Official Document SGP.21 - RSP Architecture v2.0.
As shown in Figure 1, a profile provision system for provisioning a profile to a user device 1 having an eUICC 3 includes an eSIM marketplace 5. In this embodiment, the user device lisa cellular phone (sometimes referred to as a mobile phone or a handy phone) having voice and data communication capabilities. The user device 1 includes a wireless transceiver 7 that allows receipt and sending of signals via a Public Fand Mobile Network (PFMN).
In this embodiment, the user device 1 has an eSIM marketplace application 9 and the eSIM marketplace 5 has a mobile platform 11 via which the user device 1 and the eSIM marketplace 5 communicate. The underlying technology allowing this communication is well known in the art. The eSIM Marketplace application can be provided onto the user device 1 by download from a website such as a mobile phone application store.
The eSIM marketplace 5 also includes a mobile network operator (MNO) platform 13 via which the eSIM marketplace can communicate with a first MNO system 15 associated with a first mobile network operator and a second MNO system 17 associated with a second mobile network operator. The first MNO system 15 includes business and operational support systems (B/OSS) 19 and an IMSI database 21, and the second MNO system 17 includes a B/OSS 23. It will be appreciated that the first MON system 15 and the second MNO system 17 will include many other conventional functional components which are not shown in Figure 1 for ease of illustration.
The profile provisioning system also includes an SM-DP+ network entity 25 and an SM-DS network entity 27, as specified in GSM Association Official Document SGP.21 - RSP Architecture v2.0. The SM-DP+ network entity 25 is associated with the first mobile network operator and generates and personalises profiles in accordance with data provided by the first mobile network operator. The SM-DS network entity 27 is a discovery server via which a user device 1 can find out that data is available for that user device 1 from a SM-DP+ network entity 25. Typically, the user device 1 will regularly poll the SM-DS network entity 27 to check if any data is available.
The eSIM marketplace 5 also includes a user database 29, a product database 31 and a billing module 33.
The user database 29 stores details of users of the eSIM marketplace 5. These details are received from a user during a registration process and include:
• the name of the user;
• the address of the user;
• security information;
• details of an existing subscription with a mobile network operator;
• details of profiles purchased by the user via the eSIM marketplace.
With regard to the existing subscription details, in this embodiment this relates to the default profile stored by the eUICC 3. In this embodiment, the default profile stored by the eUICC 3 is associated with a subscription with the second mobile network operator.
The product database 31 stores details of products offered by mobile network operators. In this regard, a product associates defined usage of the corresponding mobile network (PLMN) with a price and payment regime. For example, the usage may be defined in terms of voice duration, number of SMS messages, and/or amount of data download/upload. The payment regime may be post-payment or pre-payment (pay as you go). Although only first and second mobile network operators are represented in Figure 1, in practice the product database 31 may store details of products offered by many mobile network operators. In this embodiment, each product is associated with a Mobile Country Code (MCC) for the country in which the product is valid.
As will be discussed in more detail hereafter the billing module 33 manages receiving billing data from the first MNO system 15 and sending corresponding billing data to the second MNO system 17.
Figure 2 shows the main operations performed when provisioning a profile to the eUICC 3 within the user device 1. In this embodiment, as a preliminary procedure the First MNO system 15 sends, at SI, details of available products to the eSIM marketplace 5, which receives and stores, at S3, the details of available products from the first mobile network operator.
Subsequently, the eSIM marketplace application 9 detects, at S5, that the user device 1 has entered a new country. In this embodiment, this detection is as a result of the user device detecting a signal from a PLMN, such as a pilot signal, conveying a Mobile Country Code (MCC) for the new country. In response, the eSIM Marketplace application 9 sends, at S7, a product request for product details to the eSIM Marketplace 5. In this embodiment, the product request includes data identifying the country in which the user device 1 is located.
In response to receipt, at S9, of the product request from the eSIM Marketplace Application 9, the eSIM marketplace 5 identifies, at Sil, suitable products in the product database 31. In this embodiment, this identification includes identifying products that are valid in the country in which the user device is located. The eSIM Marketplace 1 then sends, at SI5, details of the identified products to the eSIM Marketplace application 9.
In response to receiving, at SI5, product details from the eSIM marketplace 5, the eSIM Marketplace application 9 displays, at SI 7, details of the products to the user of the user device. In this embodiment, this involves the eSIM Marketplace application 9 causing a display of the user device 1 to display a notification that product details are available, prompting the user to open the eSIM Marketplace application 9.
In response to receiving, at SI9, a user selection of a desired product from the displayed products, the eSIM Marketplace application 9 sends, at S21, a purchase request for the desired product to the eSIM marketplace 5. Following receipt, at S23, of the purchase request from the eSIM Marketplace application 9, the eSIM marketplace 5 sends, at S25, a corresponding purchase request to the first MNO system 15.
In this embodiment, before sending the purchase request to the first MNO system 15, the eSIM Marketplace 5 checks the user database 29 and determines that the default profile stored on the eUICC 3 is associated with the second MNO system 17. The eSIM Marketplace accordingly checks with the second MNO system 17 whether the purchase is acceptable in view of the credit rating of the user of the user device 1 by the second MNO system 17. It will be appreciated, that this would involve different considerations for pre-payment and post-payment products.
Following receipt, at S23, of the purchase request from the eSIM Marketplace 5, the first MNO system 15 can instigate the provisioning of a profile corresponding to the purchased product to the user device. In particular, the first MNO system 15 provides information to the SM-DP+ network entity 25 which enables the SM-DP+ network entity to generate the profile. This information includes an available IMSI selected from a plurality of IMSIs stored in the IMSI database 21. In this embodiment, the first MNO system 15 provides a link to the relevant network location for retrieving the profile to the SM-DS network entity 27, and also sends a copy of that link to the eSIM Marketplace 5 to be stored in the user database 29 for reference purposes. The user device 1 periodically polls the SM-DS network entity 27, and as a result of that polling retrieves the link. This enables the user device 1 to download the profile from the SM-DP+ network entity 25 and then to enable the downloaded profile.
Once the profile has been enabled, the user device 1 can send and receive voice traffic and data traffic via the PLMN associated with the first mobile network operator. This usage is monitored by the B/OSS 19. Figure 3 illustrates the procedure by which this first mobile network operator receives payment for this usage.
Firstly, the first MNO system 15 generates, at S51, billing data corresponding to usage of the PLMN of the first mobile network operator and transmits, at S53, the generated billing data corresponding to usage of the first mobile network to the eSIM marketplace 5. Following receipt, at S55, of the billing data, the eSIM Marketplace 5 processes, at S57, the billing data. This processing involves collating billing data from multiple mobile network operators to determine which net payments should be made between the mobile network operators to settle incurred charges. As part of this processing, a percentage of the incurred costs are set aside for the operator of the eSIM Marketplace 5 by way of commission.
After processing the billing data, the eSIM marketplace 5 sends, at S59, a corresponding billing request to the second MNO system 17. This billing request provides details of usage by the user of the user device 1 together with other audit information, and an amount that needs to be paid by the second mobile network operator. It will be appreciated that this amount may take account a set-off against amounts that are owed to the second mobile network operator.
Following receiving, at S61, the billing request, the second MNO system 17 invoices, at S63, the user of the user device 1 in accordance with the existing subscription between the user of the user device 1 and the second mobile network operator.
Modifications and Further Fmbodiments
In the above embodiment, an MNO system provides details of available products to the eSIM marketplace as a preliminary process in advance of a user device requesting product details. Alternatively, the eSIM marketplace may request details of available products from MNO systems in response to receiving a request from a user device for product details. Such an arrangement has the advantage that the latest product details are available.
Although in the above embodiment the eSIM Marketplace application automatically detects when the user device enters a new country, it will be appreciated that this detection may alternatively be as a result of a user operation. In particular, the user may open the eSIM Marketplace application on the mobile device and enter the new country, for example by a selection from a drop-down list.
It will be appreciated that when a product is selected for purchase, there are likely to be various formal requirements specified by the relevant country and/or mobile network operator. For example, there may be a requirement for the user to provide proof of identity and proof of address, or there may be a requirement for a user to sign a contract. As such, between the eSIM Marketplace application sending the purchase request and the first mobile network operator providing the profile, there may be an exchange of message relating to compliance with the formal requirements. In an example, scanned copies of either a passport, driving licence or other type of identity card may be stored by either the eSIM Marketplace application or the eSIM
Marketplace. In other embodiments, a user of the user device takes a self-portrait using a camera facility of the user device or enters a signature using a touchscreen, in either case the corresponding data being sent to the first mobile network operator.
Although in the above embodiment the eSIM profile is provisioned to the user device 1 by storing a link to a network location for retrieving the eSIM profile in a discovery server, other techniques could be used. For example, the link could be transmitted from the first MNO system 15 to the user device 1 via the eSIM Marketplace
5.
In this embodiment, the communication between the user device 1 and the eSIM Marketplace 5 is via an eSIM Marketplace application 9 stored by the user device 1. This has advantages in that the functionality of the eSIM Marketplace application 9 can be upgraded using conventional mobile phone application techniques. Alternatively, a web browser in the user device could be used to access a web server at the eSIM Marketplace 5, or firmware could be stored on the user device to provide analogous functionality to the eSIM Marketplace application 9.
Certain system components and methods described herein may be implemented by way of non-transitory computer program code that is storable on a non-transitory storage medium. The non-transitory storage medium can be any media that can contain, store, or maintain programs and data for use by or in connection with an instruction execution system. Machine-readable media can comprise any one of many physical media such as, for example, electronic, magnetic, optical, electromagnetic, or semiconductor media. More specific examples of suitable machine-readable media include, but are not limited to, a hard drive, a random access memory (RAM), a readonly memory (ROM), an erasable programmable read-only memory, or a portable disc.
The above embodiments are to be understood as illustrative examples of the invention. It is to be understood that any feature described in relation to any one embodiment may be used alone, or in combination with other features described, and may also be used in combination with one or more features of any other of the embodiments, or any combination of any other of the embodiments. Furthermore, equivalents and modifications not described above may also be employed without departing from the scope of the invention, which is defined in the accompanying claims.
