Abstract

255,700. Smith, J. P. Nov. 9, 1925. Ferris wheels.-The cars 49 are free to partake of a sliding movement during rotation of the wheel. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the cars 49 are suspended by loops 52, 53 from a shaft 54 sliding on rods 44 joining the ends of radial arms 30, and as the wheel is revolved, each car is first carried round with it and then slides to the other end of its guiding and supporting rod 44. Each end of the shaft 54 is provided with a carrier 55, 56 and the engagement of these carriers with cylinders 60 sliding on pistons on the rods 44 prevents undue shock at the end of each sliding movement of the cars. Two cars are brought together at the end of the lowermost arm 30 and so may be loaded simultaneously. The wheel is driven by endless cables 62 which pass over girders 41 on the arms 30 and are driven bv a pulley 77 under the control of a clutch 72. The cables are guided under the apparatus by pulleys. A pair of A-shaped legs 1 support the wheel axle 27, which is prevented' from rotating by bolts passing through the shaft and plates on the legs 1.
