Abstract
The cill protection device 10, particularly for use during the construction of a building, comprises a sheet of a rigid polymeric material, preferably PVC, which has a substantially rectangular U shape. The device comprises a base 12 of equal length to the width of the cill, a first arm 14 lying at a right angle to the base 12 and a second arm 16 forming an angle with the base 12 of between 85 and 89 degrees, preferably 87 degrees. The first arm 14 is preferably substantially longer than the second arm 16 and may comprise a lip 18 at its lower end that is co-operable with the underside of the cill. The sheet of polymeric material is preferably 1.5 2.0 millimetre thick.
Description
Construction Building Product
This invention relates to a device for use while a building is being constructed, so as to protect a cill of a window or a door on a temporary basis. It is particularly useful for the protection of artstone cills, that is, cills made of decorative, high quality material.
It is know to protect such cills temporarily by use of devices made of rigid foamed material, the device being essentially rectangular-"IT shaped in section, which fits over a cill, but the material is liable to be damaged so severely that the cill is not protected. Alternatively a cill protector of similar shape may be made of corrugated polypropylene, but such a rigid protector may be easily dislodged.
According to the invention, a cill protection device comprises a sheet of rigid polymeric material in the shape of a rectangular “U”, having a base of length equal to the width of the cill, and two straight side arms, at least one of the side arms forming an angle with said base of between 85 and 89 degrees. Said angle is preferably 87 degrees.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:-
Figure 1 is a view of a cill protector; and
Figure 2 is a side view of the cill protector of fig 1.
In Figures 1 and 2, a cill protector 10 is essentially of rectangular “U” shape in section, having a flat base 12 and opposite straight first and second side arms 14, 16. The first side arm 14 lies at right angles to the base 12. The second side arm 16 is substantially shorter than the first side arm 14, and lies at an angle A of slightly less than 90 degrees to the base. Angle A may be between 85 and 89 degrees, the angle depending on the material of which the protector 10 is made, as described below. Preferably the angle A is 87 degrees. The length L of the flat base 12 between the side arms 14, 16 is equal to the width of the cill to be protected.
In use, the cill protector 10 is fitted over a cill after the cill is in place on a building. The flat base 12 protects the top surface of the cill. The side arms 14, 16 project downwards from the base 12, protecting the side surfaces of the cill. The protector 10 is held in place on the cill by sideways pressure, generated by the fact that the sides 14,16 are not parallel.
In a variation, not illustrated, both side arms 14, 16 lie at an angle to the base 12 which is slightly less than 90 degrees.
The depth D of the longer side arm 14 is equal to the depth of the cill to be protected. The side arm 14 has a lip 18 at its lower end which can fit under the lower edge of the cill, giving additional resistance to movement.
Typically the cill protector 10 is made from a sheet of rigid polyvinyl chloride 1.5 to 2.0 millimetres in thickness. Such a thickness of PVC has been found to be of sufficient flex to allow it to be slipped over the cill by slightly widening the “U” shape, and having sufficient strength to retain its position on the cill by friction, and not be removed by accidental knocks. Such a protector can protect a cill while a building is being constructed, then removed and reused elsewhere.
Claims (5)
1. A cill protection device comprises a sheet of rigid polymeric material in the shape of a rectangular “IT, the base of the “IT being of length equal to the width of the cill, a first side arm lying at right angles to said base, and a second side arm forming an angle with said base of between 85 and 89 degrees.
2. A cill protector according to claim 1 in which the angle between the second side arm and the base is 87 degrees.
3. A cill protector according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the first side arm is substantially longer than the second side arm and comprises a lip at its lower end co-operable with the underside of said cill.
4. A cill protector according to any preceding claim made of polyvinyl chloride between 1.5 and 2.0 millimetres in thickness.
5. A cill protector substantially as herein described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
