Abstract
Description
"A method of producing a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon"
Introduction
This invention relates to a method for producing a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon.
Ribbons are used for a plethora of disparate uses including as adornments for trophies, cars and cakes and wrapping for presents, bouquets and other articles. In many cases, it is desirable to personalise the ribbon to include a message or other greeting. For example, the ribbon on a wedding car could be personalised with the names of the happy couple, the ribbon on a funeral bouquet could be personalised with a condolence message, and the ribbon on a gift could have the person's name and/or a congratulatory message printed thereon. This enhances the presentation of the gift, generates good will and in some cases adds a fun aspect to the gift giving.
It is known to provide ribbon with a pattern applied thereto however these ribbons are produced on an industrial scale with the same pattern on a large number of ribbons. However, these ribbons have, at best, a generalised message such as "congratulations" or a festive pattern printed thereon and do not have a personalised message particular to the intended recipient. Accordingly, these ribbons are not personalised ribbons within the meaning of the application in suit.
There are however problems with the known methods of personalising ribbon.
Heretofore, some florists have implemented a system whereby using a specialised printer, they can print a message onto a dedicated ribbon. This methodology is expensive, requires the use of specialised equipment and is limited in that it can only print up to two lines of text on the ribbon. Furthermore, the ribbon comes in a limited palette thereby limiting the choice to the consumer. Accordingly, the uptake and prevalence of personalised ribbon has been low.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method, system and ribbon that overcome at least some of the difficulties with the known methods, systems and ribbons. In particular, it is an object of the invention to provide a method of producing a ribbon -2 -having personalised indicia printed thereon that is inexpensive, does not require the use of specialised equipment and offers a useful choice to the consumer.
Statements of Invention
According to the invention there is provided a method of producing a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon, the method comprising the steps of: providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer; printing the personalised indicia onto a front face of the vinyl sheet; removing the sacrificial layer from the vinyl sheet; providing a ribbon for reception of the vinyl sheet having the personalised indicia printed thereon; and applying the vinyl sheet to the ribbon.
By having such a method, a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon can be produced easily in a matter of minutes. This method also significantly reduces the cost of producing ribbons with personalised messages and images thereon. In this way, personalised ribbons can now be provided for more uses than was heretofore the case. For example, it will be possible to place a ribbon in or on a new or second-hand car purchased from a car dealer personalised with best wishes and appreciation from the car dealer to the new owner.
In one embodiment of the invention there is provided a method of producing a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon in which the step of providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer further comprises providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer, the adhesive-backed vinyl sheet having a resin film on the front face thereof. This resin film allows ink from a regular office and home printer to adhere more successfully to the vinyl. By doing so, specialised equipment will not be required in order to print personalised ribbons thereby -3 -allowing the method to be performed with the most basic equipment, circumventing barriers to use of the method.
In one embodiment of the invention there is provided a method of producing a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon in which the step of providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer further comprises providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer, the adhesive-backed vinyl sheet having a resin film thermally printed on the front face thereof. Thermally printing the resin onto the vinyl sheet is seen as particularly advantageous. By thermally printing the resin onto the vinyl sheet, the resin will effectively be melted into the vinyl which allows for much better printing and in return a successful product. Thermally printing a resin onto the vinyl will ensure that the toner keys or fuses onto the vinyl. This is particularly important as the vinyl is to be placed onto a flexible substrate which otherwise could cause the toner to become displaced through movement of the substrate resulting in the print coming off easily.
In one embodiment of the invention there is provided a method of producing a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon in which the step of printing the personalised indicia onto a front face of the vinyl sheet further comprises printing the personalised indicia onto a front face of the vinyl sheet with a laser printer. This feature makes the method amenable to home and office use as it does not require a specialised printer.
In one embodiment of the invention there is provided a method of producing a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon in which the step of providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer further comprises providing a pre-cut adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer. The pre-cut region will fit a ribbon without further adjustment, reducing the time required to carry out the method.
In one embodiment of the invention there is provided a method of producing a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon in which the step of printing the personalised indicia onto a front face of the vinyl sheet further comprises the initial step of entering personalised indicia into a word processor template. As an alternative to a word processing template, other types of computer files that allow text, images and/or other graphical content to arrange the personalised indicia to enable the personalised indicia -4 -to be printed onto a vinyl sheet could be used to good effect. For simplicity, these will collectively be referred to simply as a word processor program.
In one embodiment of the invention there is provided a method of producing a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon in which the step of providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer further comprises providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer, and in which the adhesive-backed vinyl sheet is transparent. This is a particularly preferred embodiment as the transparency of the vinyl allows it to blend in with the ribbon.
In one embodiment of the invention there is provided a method of producing a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon in which the step of providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer further comprises providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer, and in which the adhesive-backed vinyl sheet is colourless. This is a particularly preferred embodiment as the colourlessness of the vinyl allows it to blend in with the ribbon thereby obviating the need for vinyl sheets in a plurality of different colours suited to match ribbons of different colours.
In one embodiment of the invention there is provided a method of producing a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon in which the step of providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer further comprises providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer, and in which the adhesive-backed vinyl sheet has a gloss finish. This is a preferred embodiment for use with ribbons with a gloss finish, such those made from a satin-type fabric.

In one embodiment of the invention there is provided a method of producing a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon in which the step of providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer further comprises providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer, the adhesive-backed vinyl sheet being one of monomeric, polymeric and cast vinyl.
In one embodiment of the invention there is provided a method of producing a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon in which the step of providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer further comprises providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer, and in which the adhesive-backed vinyl sheet has a weight of between 50 and 350 g/m2.
In one embodiment of the invention there is provided a method of producing a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon in which the step of providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer further comprises providing an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet mounted on a sacrificial layer, and in which the adhesive-backed vinyl sheet and the sacrificial layer have a combined weight of between 100 and 500 g/m2. This is the preferred range for typical laser printers.
According to the invention there is provided a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon, the ribbon comprising a flexible fabric material having a sheet of vinyl with the personalised indicia printed thereon bonded thereto, the sheet of vinyl comprising a resin film applied to the front face of the sheet of vinyl and the personalised indicia printed onto the resin film. By having such a ribbon, the ribbon will be of a high quality yet inexpensive to produce.
According to the invention there is provided a system for the production of a ribbon having personalised indicia printed thereon, the system comprising: a computing device having a word processor program loaded thereon; a laser printer in communication with the computing device; -6 -an adhesive-backed vinyl sheet for loading in the laser printer, the adhesive-backed vinyl sheet having a sacrificial layer protecting the adhesive on the vinyl sheet; and a ribbon for reception of a printed adhesive-backed vinyl sheet.
This system is seen as particularly simple and will enable ribbons to be created in a matter of minutes in a relatively inexpensive and cost effective manner.
Detailed Description of the Invention
The invention will now be more clearly understood from the following description of some embodiments thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figure 1 is diagrammatic representation of a system for use in the production of a personalised ribbon; Figure 2 is a flow chart of the method of manufacturing a personalised ribbon; Figure 3 is a front view of a blank, pre-cut vinyl sheet prior to printing; Figure 4 is a front view of a printed, pre-cut vinyl sheet; Figure 5 is a front view of the printed, pre-cut vinyl sheet prior to application to a ribbon; Figure 6 is a front view of the constructed personalised ribbon; and Figure 7 is a diagrammatic view of a personalised ribbon in use on the steering wheel of a car.
Referring to the drawings and initially to Figure 1 thereof there is shown a diagrammatic representation of a system for use in the production of a personalised ribbon, indicated -7 -generally by the reference numeral 1. The system 1 comprises a computing device, in this case provided by a personal computer (PC) 3 having a word processor program loaded thereon. The word processor program preferably has a number of templates for different personalised messages and different sized ribbons. The system further comprises a laser printer 5 in communication with the PC 3. The laser printer and the PC 3 communicate over a wired or a wireless connection 7. The laser printer 5 is preloaded with adhesive-backed vinyl sheets each of which is mounted on a sacrificial backing sheet. The vinyl sheets are pre-treated by (a) thermally coating the vinyl sheets with a resin film and (b) scoring the vinyl so that there is an appropriately-sized vinyl strip for the ribbon.
Referring to Figure 2, there is shown a flow diagram of a method of producing a personalised ribbon according to the present invention. The method comprises the initial step 21 of entering a personalised message into a word processor on the PC 3. The personalised message may include text, number(s) and/or pictorial images such as characters, logos, illustrations, emoticons and the like. Other text and fill effects are readily envisaged. Essentially, any character set useable by the PC 3 can be used in the personalised message and any colours producible by the laser printer may be used in the personalised ribbon. In step 23, the message is printed onto a vinyl sheet. The printer 5 will have been pre-loaded with the vinyl sheet and the PC transmits the personalised message for printing on the vinyl sheet to the laser printer 5. Once printed, in step 25, the backing sheet and any excess vinyl is removed so that the personalised message is ready for application onto a ribbon. In step 27, the ribbon is laid out ready for reception of a vinyl sheet. Preferably, the ribbon will have been laid out prior to the vinyl sheet having been separated from its backing sheet. Finally, in step 29, the vinyl sheet with the personalised message printed thereon is then applied to the ribbon. The adhesive backing on the vinyl sheet holds the vinyl on the ribbon.
Referring now to Figures 3 to 6 inclusive, there is graphically shown a number of stages in the production of a personalised ribbon. In Figure 3, there is shown a blank adhesive-backed vinyl sheet 31 mounted on a backing sheet (not shown). The adhesive-backed vinyl sheet 31 has an area of vinyl 33 scored on the vinyl sheet to enable release of that area from the remainder of the vinyl sheet and the backing sheet. -8 -
Referring to Figure 4, there is shown a printed vinyl sheet in which a personalised message 41 has been printed onto the vinyl sheet in the scored area 33 of the vinyl sheet. Once printed, the corner 43 of the scored area 33 of the vinyl sheet is peeled away exposing the backing sheet 45 below. The remainder of the scored area 33 of vinyl sheet with the personalised message thereon is peeled away from the backing sheet 45.
Referring to Figure 5, a ribbon 51 is laid out on a flat surface (not shown) and the vinyl sheet with the personalised message 41 thereon is aligned with the ribbon before being brought into contact with the ribbon 51 and bonded thereto as illustrated in Figure 6. As can be seen, the personalised message 41 contains text and pictorial images.
Referring now to Figure 7, there is shown one use of a personalised ribbon produced in accordance with the present invention. The personalised ribbon is being used to adorn the steering wheel of a vehicle recently purchased in a car dealership. Once the customer is ready to leave the forecourt, the personalised ribbon may be removed. It is believed that the personalised touch will be favourably received by the customer, adding to their enjoyment of their new purchase. It is envisaged that after use, in some cases, the vinyl with personalised message thereon may be removed from the ribbon and the ribbon can be recycled and reused for another customer if desired. (Ford ® and the Ford ® ellipse are registered trade marks of the Ford Motor Company -no relationship with the Ford Motor Company is claimed or implied.) In this specification the terms "comprise, comprises, comprised and comprising" and the terms "include, includes, included and including" are all deemed totally interchangeable and should be afforded the widest possible interpretation.
The invention is in no way limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described and may be varied in both construction and detail within the scope of the appended claims. -9 -
