Brief Description of the Drawings
The present invention will now be more particularly described, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure I shows a light bezel, and a luminaire comprising a light bezel support surface.
Description
Example embodiments are described below in sufficient detail to enable those of ordinary skill in the art to embody and implement the systems and processes herein described. It is important to understand that embodiments can be provided in many alternate forms and should not be construed as limited to the examples set forth herein.
A light bezel 101 is shown in Figure I. The light bezel 101 is usable with a luminaire comprising a light bezel support surface on which the light bezel 101 is retainable, as will be described in detail below.
A luminaire 102 is also shown in Figure I, which comprises a light bezel support surface 103.
The light bezel 101 and luminaire 102 shown in Figure I are illustrative embodiments of a light bezel, a luminaire, and a light bezel and luminaire combination according to the present invention. It is therefore to be understood that a light bezel, a luminaire and/or a light bezel and luminaire combination according to the present invention may vary in non-essential features from those of the light bezel 101 and luminaire 102 shown in, and described with reference to, Figure 1.
In this illustrated embodiment, luminaire 102 is a downlight comprising a tubular body 104 with a lower or front annular rim 105 that extends radially outwardly from the tubular body 104. The underside of the lower or front annular rim 105 presents a light bezel support surface 103. The luminaire 102 is installable for use within a ceiling (not shown) in such a way that the tubular body 104 is recessed within the ceiling and the lower or front annular rim 105 is positioned on the underside of the ceiling. The light bezel 101 is retainable on the light bezel support surface 103 of the luminaire 102 such that the light bezel 101 is visible on the underside of the ceiling in which the luminaire 102 is installed.
In this illustrated embodiment, the luminaire 102 comprises a lamp holder (not visible) for releasably holding a compatible lamp 106. In this example, lamp 106 is an LED (light emitting diode) lamp. It is to be appreciated however that any suitable compatible type of lamp may be used in the lamp holder of the luminaire 102. The light bezel 101 defines a central aperture 107, such that when in use with the luminaire 102, light from a lamp 106 held by the lamp holder (not visible) of the luminaire 102 passes through the central aperture 107 of the light bezel 106. In alternative examples, the lamp may be an incandescent, fluorescent or halogen light bulb.
As will be described in further detail, the light bezel 101 comprises a mounting region that comprises one part of a two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and that presents a mounting surface for magnetically co-operating with a light bezel support surface of a luminaire presented by a light bezel support region comprising the other part of said two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, whereby to releasably retain the light bezel on the light bezel support surface.
As will also be described in further detail, the light bezel support surface 103 of the luminaire 102 is presented by a light bezel support region comprising the other part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, whereby to releasably retain the light bezel on the light bezel support surface.
The mounting surface of the light bezel 101 and the light bezel support surface 103 of the luminaire 102 are magnetically co-operable to releasably retain the light bezel 101 on the light bezel support surface 103.
Light bezel 101 comprises a mounting region, indicated at 108. In this illustrated embodiment, the light bezel 101 comprises a plurality of mounting regions, and, in this illustrated example, comprises four mounting regions, indicated at 108, 109, 110 and III. In this illustrated example, the plurality of mounting regions 108, 109, 110, III are spaced equidistantly around the central aperture 107 of the light bezel 101. Further, in this example, the light bezel 101 is circular, defines a circular central aperture 101 and the plurality of mounting regions 108, 109, 110, III are spaced equidistantly around the central aperture 110 about an imaginary circle that is concentric with the circular central aperture 101.
It is to be appreciated that in an embodiment in which the light bezel comprises a plurality of mounting regions, the plurality of mounting regions may comprise 2 or any greater number of mounting regions. In addition, the mounting regions of a plurality of mounting regions may or may not be spaced equidistantly around the centre of the light bezel. The light bezel may have any suitable shape, and the light bezel may define a central aperture having any suitable shape. In an embodiment in which the light bezel comprise a plurality of mounting regions, the plurality of mounting regions may or may not be spaced around an imaginary loop that is concentric around the edge of the central aperture. The light bezel may also have any suitable dimensions. The light bezel may be fabricated from any suitable material or combination of materials, and may be manufactured using any suitable technique, method or process or combination of techniques, methods or processes. The light bezel may have any desired colouration and/or surface finish.
In an alternative embodiment, the light bezel comprises only a single mounting region. In an embodiment, the light bezel comprises a mounting region that presents a mounting surface that extends around the centre of the light bezel. In an example, a single mounting surface extends around the centre of the light bezel.
The or each mounting region of the light bezel comprises one part of a two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and presents a mounting surface. It is to be appreciated that the mounting surface may or may not be a surface of the one part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement. For example, in an arrangement in which the mounting surface is not a surface of the one part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, the mounting surface may be a surface that extends over the one part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, such that the one part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement is covered by that surface, which may be desirable for aesthetic reasons.
The mounting region 108 of light bezel 101 presents a mounting surface 112 and, similarly, the mounting regions 109, 110 and III of light bezel 101 present mounting surfaces 113, 114 and 115 respectively. In this embodiment, the mounting surface 112 and mounting surfaces 113, 114, 115 are magnetically attractive. By 'magnetically attractive' it is meant that the surface may magnetically co-operate with an article fabricated from a magnetisable material. In this embodiment, the mounting regions 108, 109, 110, III of light bezel 101 comprise respective permanent magnets 116, 117, 118 and 119 that provide the mounting surfaces 112, 113, 114, 115 respectively.
The luminaire 102 comprises a light bezel support region, indicated at 120, that presents the light bezel support surface 103. In this embodiment, the light bezel support region 102 extends around the lower or front annular rim 105 and the underside of the lower or front annular rim 105 provides the light bezel support surface 103 of the luminaire 102. Thus, in this illustrated embodiment, the luminaire 102 comprising a single light bezel support region.
In an alternative embodiment, the luminaire comprises a plurality of light bezel support regions. It is to be appreciated that in an embodiment in which the luminaire comprises a plurality of light bezel support regions, the plurality of light bezel support regions may comprise 2 or any greater number of light bezel support regions. In addition, the light bezel support regions of a plurality of light bezel support regions may be arrangement in any suitable arrangement. The luminaire may have any suitable shape and any suitable dimensions. The luminaire may be fabricated from any suitable material or combination of materials, and may be manufactured using any suitable technique, method or process or combination of techniques, methods or processes.
The luminaire may have any desired colouration and/or surface finish.
The or each light bezel support region of the luminaire comprises the other part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement to that of the light bezel and presents a light bezel support surface. It is to be appreciated that the light bezel support surface may or may not be a surface of the other part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement. For example, in an arrangement in which the light bezel support surface is not a surface of the other part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, the light bezel support surface may be a surface that extends over the other part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, such that the other part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement is covered by that surface, which may be desirable for aesthetic reasons.
In this illustrated embodiment, the lower or front annular rim 105 is fabricated from a magnetisable material. In this embodiment, the lower or front annular rim 105 is fabricated from magnetisable steel.
To mount the light bezel 101 onto the luminaire 102, the light bezel 101 is advanced towards the luminaire 102 in such a way that the mounting surfaces 112, 113, 114, 115 of the light bezel 101 are advanced towards the light bezel support surface 103 of the luminaire 102 until the mounting surfaces 112, 113, 114, 115 of the light bezel 101 and the light bezel support surface 103 of the luminaire 102 so magnetically co-operate as to retain the light bezel 101 on the light bezel support surface 103 of the luminaire 102.
The first and second parts of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement are releasable from the magnetically coupled condition and the light bezel 101 is thus releasably retainable on the luminaire 102 by a magnetic coupling between the or each mounting surface of the light bezel 101 and the or each light bezel support surface 130 the luminaire 102.
In this illustrated embodiment, the mounting regions 108, 109, 110, III of the light bezel 101 each comprise the same first part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, and the light bezel support region 120 of the luminaire 102 comprises the other, second part of the two magnetic coupling arrangement It is to be appreciated that in an alternative embodiment, the light bezel comprises at least one first mounting region with a first part of a two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and the luminaire comprises at least one corresponding first light bezel support region with the second part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, and the light bezel further comprises at least one second mounting region with the second part of a two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and the luminaire further comprises at least one corresponding second light bezel support region with the first part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement. Thus, arrangements are possible other than an arrangement in which one of the light bezel and luminaire has only one part of a two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and the other of the light bezel and luminaire has only the other part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement The present invention provides a light bezel comprising a mounting region that comprises one part of a two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and that presents a mounting surface for magnetically co-operating with a light bezel support surface of a luminaire, the light bezel support surface presented by a light bezel support region comprising the other part of said two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, whereby to releasably retain the light bezel on the light bezel support surface.
The present invention also provides a luminaire presenting a light bezel support surface and comprising a light bezel releasably retainable on the light bezel support surface, in which the light bezel comprises a mounting region comprising one part of a two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and presenting a mounting surface, the light bezel support surface of the luminaire is presented by a light bezel support region comprising the other part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, and the mounting surface of the light bezel and the light bezel support surface of the luminaire are magnetically co-operable to releasably retain the light bezel on the light bezel support surface.
The present invention further provides a method of securing a light bezel to a light bezel support surface of a luminaire, comprising the steps of: identifying a light bezel support surface of a luminaire, the light bezel surface provided by a light bezel support region comprising one-part of a two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, receiving a light bezel comprising a mounting region comprising the other part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and presenting a mounting surface, and advancing the mounting surface of the light bezel into magnetic co-operation with the light bezel support surface of the luminaire such that the light bezel is releasably retained on the light bezel support surface of the luminaire.
In an embodiment, the light bezel further comprises one part of a two-part mechanical coupling arrangement for mechanically coupling the light bezel to a luminaire comprising the other part of the two-part mechanical coupling arrangement.
This arrangement allows for the light bezel to be secured to the luminaire by an arrangement other than a two-part magnetic coupling arrangement described previously. In an application, the light bezel may first be magnetically coupled upon the light bezel support surface of the luminaire using the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and then subsequently mechanically coupled with the luminaire using the two-part mechanical coupling arrangement. For example, the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement may then be used initially to facilitate location of the light bezel on the luminaire before the light bezel is more securely mounted onto the luminaire by fastening, connecting or attaching the light bezel to the luminaire using the two-part mechanical coupling arrangement.
In an embodiment, the two-part mechanical coupling arrangement is a releasable two-part mechanical coupling arrangement. The two-part mechanical coupling arrangement may be any suitable type. In an example, the two-part mechanical coupling arrangement is a bayonet fitting. In an alternative example, the two-part mechanical coupling arrangement is a screw thread fitting. In another alternative example, the two-part mechanical coupling arrangement is a positive mechanical fit arrangement, for example a push-fit arrangement.
The present invention thus provides a light bezel comprising a mounting region that comprises one part of a two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and that presents a mounting surface for magnetically co-operating with a light bezel support surface of a luminaire, the light bezel support surface presented by a light bezel support region comprising the other part of said two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, whereby to releasably retain the light bezel on the light bezel support surface, in which the light bezel further comprises one part of a two-part mechanical coupling arrangement for mechanically coupling the light bezel to a luminaire comprising the other part of the two-part mechanical coupling arrangement The present invention further provides a luminaire presenting a light bezel support surface and comprising a light bezel releasably retainable on the light bezel support surface, in which the light bezel comprises a mounting region comprising one part of a two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and presenting a mounting surface, the light bezel support surface of the luminaire is presented by a light bezel support region comprising the other part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, and the mounting surface of the light bezel and the light bezel support surface of the luminaire are magnetically co-operable to releasably retain the light bezel on the light bezel support surface, in which the light bezel further comprises one part of a two-part mechanical coupling arrangement, the luminaire further comprises the other part of said two-part mechanical coupling arrangement, and the light bezel is mechanically securable to the luminaire using the two-part mechanical coupling arrangement The present invention yet further provides a method of securing a light bezel to a light bezel support surface of a luminaire, comprising the steps of: identifying a light bezel support surface of a luminaire, the light bezel surface provided by a light bezel support region comprising one part of a two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, receiving a light bezel comprising a mounting region comprising the other part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and presenting a mounting surface, and advancing the mounting surface of the light bezel into magnetic co-operation with the light bezel support surface of the luminaire such that the light bezel is releasably retained on the light bezel support surface of the luminaire, in which the light bezel further comprises one part of a two-part mechanical coupling arrangement, the luminaire further comprises the other part of the two-part mechanical coupling arrangement, and the method comprises the further step of mechanically securing the releasably retained light bezel to the luminaire using the two-part mechanical coupling arrangement.
The present invention provides a light bezel and luminaire combination in which the light bezel is releasably retainable on a light bezel support surface of the luminaire by a magnetic coupling arrangement This allows a light bezel used with the luminaire to be advantageously replaced by or exchanged with another light bezel usable with that luminaire. Swapping one light bezel with another may be performed for maintenance reasons and/or for aesthetic reasons. For example, a damaged light bezel of a luminaire may be readily replaced or a light bezel may be conveniently changed for another with a different appearance.
The present invention also provides a light bezel and luminaire combination in which the light bezel is releasably retainable on a light bezel support surface of the luminaire by a magnetic coupling arrangement and also in which the light bezel is mechanically engageable on a light bezel support surface of the luminaire by a mechanical coupling arrangement In embodiments in which the mechanical coupling arrangement is also releasable, the light bezel may beneficially be easily changed.
The present invention still further provides a method of securing a light bezel to a light bezel support surface of a luminaire comprising the steps of: identifying a light bezel support surface of a luminaire, the light bezel surface provided by a light bezel support region comprising one part of a two-part magnetic coupling arrangement, receiving a light bezel comprising a mounting region comprising the other part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and presenting a mounting surface, and advancing the mounting surface of the light bezel into magnetic co-operation with the light bezel support surface of the luminaire such that the light bezel is releasably retained on the light bezel support surface of the luminaire, removing the releasably retained light bezel from the light bezel support surface of the luminaire, receiving a second, different light bezel comprising a mounting region comprising the said one part of said two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and presenting a mounting surface, and advancing the mounting surface of the second, different light bezel into magnetic co-operation with the light bezel support surface of the luminaire such that the second, different light bezel is releasably retained on the light bezel support surface of the luminaire.
The present invention thus provides a luminaire with a front light bezel that is releasably retainable on the luminaire using a magnetic coupling that allows uncomplicated replacement of the light bezel with another so as to mend or alter the appearance of the luminaire.
It is to be appreciated that the luminaire may be any suitable type of luminaire, and the invention is not limited to a luminaire in the form of a downlight, as described with reference to Figure I. Variations in the light bezel and in the luminaire are envisaged that would still be in accordance with the present invention. In an embodiment, the luminaire comprises a light body that supports at least one LED and driver circuitry. In an embodiment, the light bezel supports at least one LED. An LED light source and/or driver circuitry may be supported by a luminaire light body and/or a luminaire light bezel.
It is to be appreciated also that a light bezel provided with one part of a two-part magnetic coupling arrangement and one part of a two-part mechanical coupling arrangement may still be used with a luminaire that only has the other part of the two-part mechanical coupling arrangement Such embodiments are not then limited to use only with luminaires having the other part of the two-part magnetic coupling arrangement The present invention advantageously provides a light bezel, luminaire and luminaire and light bezel combination with improved coupling between the light bezel and luminaire that facilitates location of the light bezel on the luminaire and that facilitates convenient exchange of a light bezel of the luminaire, which is beneficial for repair and/or decorative purposes.
Although illustrative embodiments of the invention have been disclosed in detail herein, with reference to the accompanying drawings, it is understood that the invention is not limited to the precise embodiments shown and that various changes and modifications can be effected therein by one skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims and their equivalents.
