Abstract

A metal base 1 to support a building, such as shed X, comprises a metal frame 2 having long edge members 3 and 4 and short edge members 5 and 6. Intermediate members may subdivide the internal space (Fig 1, 7 and 8). The frame may be made from galvanised box section steel. Sleeves (Fig 1,5A, 5B, 6A and 6B) may be fitted to the short/long edge members to allow them to be fitted to the other of the short/long edge members. Tabs or projections (Fig 1,7A, 7B, 8A, 8B) may be fitted to the intermediate members to allow them to rest on the long edge members. A plurality of legs (Fig 1, 9A, 9B, 9C, 9D) may be made from concrete reinforcing bar and may be fitted with sleeves (Fig 1,10A, 10B, 10C, 10D) to allow them to be fitted over the edge members. The legs may be located within holes A, B, C, D. Concrete may then be poured into the holes forming feet 11A, 11B, 11C, 11D. The base may then be above ground level and a building, for example a wooden shed; may be placed on the base.

Description

* TITLE: Base for a Building The present invention relates to a base for a building, especially a wooden building such as a shed.
When erecting a wooden shed it is common practice to lay a concrete base on a bed of stones or hard core placed in a hole in the ground. The hole and concrete base is normally substantially the size of the footprint of the shed. The shed then can sit on the concrete base.
Thedigging of the hole and laying of a concrete base is a time consuming business as normally perfonned by a skilled builder, and thus can be quite costly.
The invention seeks to provide a base for a building which can be erected quickly, without skilled labour, and at a reduced cost.
According to the present invention there is provided a base for a building comprising a substantially planar metal frame and at least three legs depending therefrom, said legs being adapted to support the frame off the ground, and the frame having a footprint to support a building.
Preferably each legs is adapted to be set in concrete and having a surface which prevents a leg from axial movement in the concrete. Preferably each leg is formed concrete reinforcement rod.
Preferably the frame is formed of metal. Preferably the frame is formed of length of material which can be interconnected manually and which can be assembled together on site to form the frame.
In one embodiment the frame is rectangular and comprises a pair of long edge members, a pair of short edge members, and one or more intermediate members between the long or short edges.
Preferably each short edge member or long edge member includes a sleeve at either end to embrace the long edge member or short edge member, whereby to connect a short edge member to a long edge member.
Preferably each intermediate member includes a projection at either end to rest on long edge member or short edge members whereby to connect an intermediate member to a short or long edge member.
Preferably each leg has a sleeve at one end to embrace a long edge member or short edge member.
Preferably each long edge member, short edge member, or intermediate member is formed from metal. Preferably each long edge member, short edge member, or intermediate member is formed from metal box section. Preferably each long edge member, short edge member, or intermediate member is formed from galvanised metal.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows an eiçplode view of a base, and Figure 2 shows an assembled view of a base with a shed.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a base 1 for a rectangular shed X. Shed X is of a type well known in the art.
Base 1 has a rectangular metal frame 2 having a footprint to support shed X. Frame 2 comprises a pair of long edge members 3,4, a pair of short edge members 5,6, and two intermediate members 7,8 between the long edges. Long edge members, short edge members and intermediate members may be formed of galvanised box section steel Short edge members 5,6 each include a sleeve 5A,5B and 6A,6B at either end to embrace the ends of the long edge members 3,4, whereby to connect a short edge member to a long edge member. Such sleeves could be as shown, e.g. cut from rectangular tube, or C-shaped.
Preferably each intermediate member includes a projection 7A,7B and 8A,SB at either end to rest on long edge member whereby to connect an intermediate member to long edge member 3,4. Instead of a projection as shown, such projections could be hooks.
Four legs 9A,9B,9C,9D are provided formed of concrete reinforcing rod. Each leg has a sleeve IOA,1OB,IOC,1OD at one end to embrace a long edge member 3,4. Being of concrete reinforcing rod, each leg 9A,9B,9C,9D is adapted to be set in concrete and has a surface which prevents a leg from axial movement in the concrete.
Frame 2 is formed of lengths of material which can be interconnected manually and which can be assembled together on site to form the frame without the need for tools.
As shown in Figure 2, base 1 is used as follows.
Frame 2 is first placed on the ground standing on its legs 9A,911,9C,9D. The position of the legs on the ground is marked with a peg or the like (not shown) and the frame removed.
Four holes A,B,C,D are dug in the marked ground. Frame 2 is then placed on the ground with its legs 9A,9B,9C,9D in holes A,B,C,D. The edges 3,4,5,6 are then levelled e.g. using bricks and the like supporting the edges from the ground. Quick set concrete is then poured into the holes A,B,C,D so as set as feet I 1A,1 lB,l 1C,1 1D around the bottom of the legs 9A,9B,9C,9D.
The frame in then set solid relative to the ground and supported off the ground by the legs 9A,9B,9C,9D. Shed X can be placed on the base 1. Shed X can be secured to frame 2 using ties not shown.
Frame 2 can be transported to a site with its component parts unassembled. It provides a base for a building which can be erected quickly, without skilled labour, and at a reduced cost.
Frame 2 can be of any desired size to suit different sizes of sheds and may have more or less intermediate members.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example the base could be used for buildings other than sheds.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention

Claims (6)

  1. CLAIMS1. A base for a building comprising a substantially planar metal frame and at least three legs depending therefrom, said legs being adapted to support the frame off the ground, and the frame having a footprint to support a building.
  2. 2. A base according to claim 1, wherein each leg is adapted to be set in concrete and having a surface which prevents a leg from axial movement in the concrete.cc
  3. 3. A base according to claim 2, wherein each leg is formed concrete reinforcement rod.
  4. 4. A base according to any preceding claim, whcrcin the frame is formed of mctal.
  5. 5. A base according to any preceding claim, wherein the frame is formed of lengths of material which can be interconnected manually and which can be assembled together on site to form the frame.
  6. 6. A base according to claim any preceding claim, wherein the frame is rectangular and comprises a pair of long edge members, a pair of short edge members, and one or more intermediate members between the long or short edges.-. -..r ---.
