In order that the invention may be more fully understood specific embodiments will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a clothes hanger made in accordance with a first embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 is a front view of the clothes hanger for figure 1; Figure 3 is a cross-section of the clothes hanger of Figures 1 and 2 through section A-A; Figure 4 is a perspective view of the clothes hanger of Figures 1 to 3 in use; Figure 5 is a perspective view of a clothes hanger made in accordance with a second embodiment of the present invention wherein the hook portion of the hanger is in a retracted position; Figure 6 is a perspective view of the clothes hanger of Figure 5 wherein the hook portion of the hanger is in an extended position and available to hang an item of clothing; Figure 7 is a front view of the clothes hanger of Figure 5; Figure 8 is a cross-section of the clothes hanger of Figure 7 through section A-A; Figure 9 is a perspective view of the clothes hanger of Figure 5 in use and wherein the hook portion of the hanger is in a retracted position; Figure 10 is a perspective view of the clothes hanger of Figure 5 in use and wherein the hook portion of the hanger is in an extended position and available to hang an item of clothing; Figure 11 is a perspective view of a clothes hanger made in accordance with a third embodiment of the present invention wherein the hook portion of the hanger is in a retracted position; Figure 12 is a perspective view of the clothes hanger of Figure 11 wherein the hook portion of the hanger is in an extended position and available to hang an item of clothing; Figure 13 is a front view of the clothes hanger of Figure 11; Figure 14 is a cross-section of the clothes hanger of Figure 13 through section A-A; Figure 15 is a perspective view of the clothes hanger of Figure 11 in use and wherein the hook portion of the hanger is in a retracted position; and Figure 16 is a perspective view of the clothes hanger of Figure 11 in use and wherein the hook portion of the hanger is in an extended position and available to hang an item of clothing.
Referring to Figures 1 to 4 and a first embodiment of the present invention, there is a provided a clothes hanger 1, having a substantially rectangular outer wall 2 and a substantially rectangular inner wall 3 which are joined together by a U-bend 4 at the upper end of hanger 1 such that clothes hanger 1 is substantially U-shaped in cross-section.
Outer wall 2 and inner wall 3 are angled towards each other away from U-bend 4 and towards the lower end of hanger 1.
Between outer wall 2 and inner wall 3 is defined a gap 5, which owing to outer wall 2 and inner wall 3 being angled towards each other results in gap 5 tapering from the upper end of hanger 1 to the lower end of hanger 1.
At its widest point adjacent the upper end of hanger 1 gap 5 is approximately 5mm in width.
Adjacent the lower end of hanger 1 is found free end 6 of outer wall 2 and at the lower end of hanger 1 is found free end 7 or inner wall 3.
Inner wall 3 of hanger 1 is slightly longer than outer wall 2, thereby allowing free end 6 of outer wall 2 to pinch a belt or item of clothing against inner wall 3.
Outer wall 2 comprises a substantially centrally disposed and substantially rectangular opening B that extends from near free end 6 of outer wall 2 and through U-bend 4 at the upper end of hanger 1 to terminate at the top of inner wall 3.
Opening 8 thus results in outer wall 2 being substantially U-shaped.
Extending from the top of inner wall 3 and central relative to opening 8 is hook portion 9 having a free end 10. Hook portion 9 is in a substantially fixed position relative to inner and outer walls 2, 3.
Hook portion 9 is substantially sigmoid in shape with its proximal section extending from the top of inner wall 3 with the same curvature as U-bend 4, its central section extending towards the lower end of hanger 1 within gap 5 and its distal end section 11 extending towards the upper end of hanger 1 and being substantially coplanar with outer wall 2.
Free end 10 of hook portion 9 terminates substantially in line with the top of outer wall 2 (and thus also in line with the bottom of U-bend 4).
Although in the present embodiment free end 10 of hook portion 9 terminates at a point substantially coplanar with outer wall 2 in other embodiments free end 10 may terminate at a point between outer wall 2 and inner wall 3.
However, in such embodiments, and in order to provide a large hooking area it would be preferable if a hook portion extended from an inner wall at least 50% of the distance towards an outer wall, even more preferably at least at least 75% of the distance towards an outer wall and even more preferably at least at least 90% of the distance towards an outer wall.
In use hanger 1 may be deployed by slidably attaching it to a belt 12, or the waistband of a pair of trousers or other leggings (not shown). Hanger 1 is able to slidably attach to belt 12 by inserting belt 12 into gapS between inner wall 3 and outer wall 2.
Hanger 1 rests on U-bend portion 4 and the corresponding curve of hook portion 9. Hanger 1 is retained on belt 12 by belt 12 being pinched between free end 6 of outer wall 2 and inner wall 3.
A user is then able to hang an item of clothing such as a jacket 24 over free end 10 of hook portion 9.
Advantageously hanger 1 may be worn when not in use without fear of hook portion 9 snagging on passing items as free end 10 is shielded from unwanted snagging by being substantially co-planar with outer wall 2 and being located between the upper and lower ends of hanger 1. It will be apparent that in alternative embodiments instead of being located between the upper and lowers ends of a hanger a free end of a hook portion may terminate at the upper end of a hanger and the free end may still be hindered from snagging on passing items.
Owing to the fact that hook portion 9 extends from inner wall 3 in conjunction with opening S formed in outer wall 2 a user is readily able to locate and access hook portion 9 even if hanger 1 is not visible to them at the time, for example in a crowd situation. With hook portion 9 extending the full distance between inner wall 3 and outer wall 2 a user is presented with a large hooking area on hook portion 9 on which to locate a hanging loop of an item of clothing.
Indeed, the fact that opening S extends through U-bend portion 4 at the upper end of hanger 1 means that a user may readily drop a hanging loop of an item of clothing over hook portion 9 without difficulty.
Turning to a second aspect of the present invention and Figures 5 to 10, there is provided a clothes hanger 13 having a substantially rectangular outer wall 14 and a substantially rectangular inner wall 15 which are joined together by a U-bend 16 at the upper end of hanger 16 such that clothes hanger 13 is substantially U-shaped in cross-section.
Outer wall 14 and inner wall 15 are angled towards each other away from U-bend 16 and towards the lower end of hanger 13.
Between outer wall 14 and inner wall 15 is defined a gap 23, which owing to outer wall 14 and inner wall 15 being angled towards each other results in gap 23 tapering from the upper end of hanger 13 to the lower end of hanger 13.
At the lower end of hanger 13 are found free end 17 of outer wall 14 and free end 18 of inner wall 15.
Inner wall 15 of hanger 13 is slightly longer than outer wall 14, thereby allowing free end 17 of outer wall l4to pinch a belt or item of clothing against inner wall 15.
Outer wall 14 comprises a centrally disposed substantially planar hook portion 19 having a free end 20 adjacent the upper end of hanger 13 and a lower end 21 disposed adjacent tree end 17 of outer wall 14.
Hook portion 19 is pivotably attached to outer wall 14 adjacent its lower end 21 and moveable between a first position as shown in Figure 5 wherein hook portion 19 is substantially coplanar with outer wall 14 and a second position as shown in Figure 6 wherein hook portion 19 is angled to outer wall 14 such that lower end 21 of hook portion 19 is located within gap 23 and free end 20 of hook portion 19 extends outwardly from outer wall 14.
Turning to hanger 13 in use and turning to Figures 9 and 10, hanger 13 may be deployed by slidably attaching it to a belt 12, or the waistband of a pair of trousers or other leggings (not shown). Hanger 13 is able to slidably attach to belt 12 by inserting belt 12 into gap 23 between inner wall 15 and outer wall 14.
Hanger 13 rests on U-bend portion 16 and is retained on belt 12 by belt 12 being pinched between free end 17 of outer wall 14 and inner wall 15.
In its first position shown in Figure 9 hook portion 19 is retracted and not capable of hanging an item of clothing. It is in this configuration that a user may normally wear hanger 13 and walk around without fear of hook portion 19 accidentally snagging on passing items.
When a user wishes to hang an item of clothing such as a jacket 24, the user simply pivots hook portion 19 into its second position as shown in Figure 10 wherein hook portion 19 is extended and is capable of hanging an item of clothing over its free end 20. Jacket 24 may then be hung on hook portion 19.
Turning to a third aspect of the present invention and Figures 11 to 16, there is provided a clothes hanger 25 having a substantially rectangular outer wall 26 and a substantially rectangular inner wall 27 which are joined together by a U-bend 28 at the upper end of hanger 28 such that clothes hanger 25 is substantially U-shaped in cross-section.
Outer wall 26 and inner wall 27 are angled towards each other away from U-bend 28 and towards the lower end of hanger 25.
Between outer wall 26 and inner wall 27 is defined a gap 34, which owing to outer wall 26 and inner wall 27 being angled towards each other results in gap 34 tapering from the upper end of hanger 25 to the lower end of hanger 25.
At the lower end of hanger 25 are found free end 29 of outer wall 26 and free end 30 of inner wall 27.
Inner wall 27 of hanger 25 is slightly longer than outer wall 26, thereby allowing free end 29 of outer wall 26 to pinch a belt or item of clothing against inner wall 27.
Outer wall 26 comprises a centrally disposed substantially planar hook portion 31 having a free end 32 adjacent the upper end of hanger 25 and a lower end 33 disposed adjacent free end 29 of outer wall 26.
Substantially rectangular hook portion 31 is slidably mounted in a recess 36 on outer wall 26 by means of a retaining projection 22 that extends from the centre of recess 36 of outer wall 26 through an elongate aperture 35 centrally disposed in hook portion 31.
Owing to recess 36 the front surface of hook portion 31 is substantially flush with the front surface of outer wall 26 surrounding recess 36.
Elongate aperture 35 is configured such that hook portion 31 is slidably moveable between a first position as shown in Figure 11 wherein free end 32 of hook portion 31 is retracted and lied below the upper end of hanger 25 and a second position as shown in Figure 12 wherein free end 32 of hook portion 31 is extended above the upper end of hanger 25.
To hinder the movement of hook portion between its first and second positions edges 37, 38 of hook portion 31 are serrated, as are corresponding edges 39, of recess 36.
Thus in order to move hook 31 between its first and second positions sufficient force must be applied by a user so as to overcome the resistance provided by serrated edges 37, 38 of hook portion 31 interacting with the serrated edges 39, 40 of recess 36.
Turning to hanger 25 in use and turning to Figures 15 and 16, hanger 25 may be deployed by slidably attaching it to a belt 12, or the waistband of a pair of trousers or other leggings (not shown). Hanger 25 is able to slidably attach to belt 22 by inserting belt 22 into gap 34 between inner wall 27 and outer wall 26.
Hanger 25 rests on U-bend portion 28 and is retained on belt 22 by belt 22 being pinched between free end 29 of outer wall 25 and inner wall 27.
In its first position shown in Figure 9 hook portion 31 is retracted and not capable of hanging an item of clothing. It is in this configuration that a user may normally wear hanger 25 and walk around without fear of hook portion 31 accidentally snagging on passing items.
When a user wishes to hang an item of clothing such as a jacket 24, the user simply slides hook portion 31 into its second position as shown in Figure 15 wherein hook portion 31 is extended and is capable of hanging an item of clothing over its free end 32. Jacket 24 may then be hung on hook portion 31.
The hangers of the present embodiments are formed of metal, but it will be apparent that any suitable material could be used.
Although in the second and third embodiments of the present invention the free end of a hook portion is rendered inactive by moving a hook portion between extended and retracted positions it will be apparent that on other embodiments a hook portion might be static and a moveable cover for the hook portion might be provided.
In such an embodiment the cover would be moveable between a first position wherein the free end of the relevant hook portion was covered and unavailable for hanging an item of clothing and a second position wherein the free end of the relevant hook portion was uncovered and available to hang an item of clothing.
It will be apparent that many variations are possible without departing from the scope of the present invention as set out in the appended claims.
