Brief Description of the Drawings
The present invention will now be more particularly described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an under face view of an LED luminaire comprising a light face formed from a light-non-transmitting surface disposed between first and second light emitting surfaces; and Figure 2 is an exploded view of the LED luminaire of Figure 1.
Description
The present invention relates to an LED luminaire with a multi-panelled light face.
An LED luminaire 101 is shown in Figure 1. The LED luminaire 101 comprises a light face 102. The light face 102 comprises a light-non-transmitting surface 103 disposed between first and second light emitting surfaces 104, 105.
In this illustrated embodiment, the LED luminaire 101 is a flat panel LED lurninaire, and the light face 102 is substantially planar. According to the shown arrangement, the light face 102 comprises only a single light-non-transmitting surface 103 disposed between first and second light emitting surfaces 104, 105.
The light -non-transmitting surface 103 and the first and second light emitting surfaces 104, 105 are each surfaces of respective panels. The panels 103, 104, are surrounded by a frame 106. The panels 103, 104, 105 may be secured together to form the light face in any suitable way. Each of the panels 103, 104, may be secured to another, and may be arranged to be supported by the frame 106, using any suitable means and method.
The light face 102 may have any suitable shape, for example a square shape or a rectangular shape, and any suitable dimensions. Similarly, the frame 106 may have any suitable shape, for example a square shape or a rectangular shape, and any suitable dimensions. In an embodiment, the frame 106 has the same shape as the light face 102. The frame 106 may be used in the mounting of the LED luminaire 101 at any suitable location. The LED luminaire 101 may be used as a ceiling or wall light. The LED luminaire may be surface mounted or suspended.
The light face 102 of LED luminaire 101 has a nominal light face area A. The LED luminaire 101 with a multi-panelled light face, including a light non-transmitting surface disposed between a pair of light-transmitting surfaces, has a performance capability that is comparable to a prior art flat panel LED luminaire with a single-panelled light face having the same nominal light face area A. An exploded view of LED luminaire 101 is shown in Figure 2.
The LED luminaire 101 comprises a light non-transmitting panel 1 and a pair of diffuser panels 2 one to each side of the light non-transmitting panel 1. In this shown example, the panels 1, 2 are each elongate. The panels 1, 2 are each rectangular and the diffuser panels 2 have substantially equal dimensions.
Behind each diffuser panel 2, is a light dispersing and transmitting panel 3, then a reflector 4 and then a heat-sink 5.
The LED luminaire 101 may thus comprise first and second light transmitting surfaces each provided by a lighting set comprising a diffusing layer, a light dispersing and transmitting layer, a reflector, and a heat sink layer.
The panels 1, 2, when assembled, together form a light face having four sides.
The frame is also four-sided and comprises four side frame sections 6 and four corner fixing elements 7.
In this embodiment, the first and second light transmitting surfaces of the LED luminaire 101 are each edge-lit. As illustrated, the LED luminaire 101 comprising first and second LED strips 8, one for each of the first and second light transmitting surfaces. In the arrangement shown, the LED strips 8 are located towards opposed side frame sections 6 of the frame. The LED strips may comprise any suitable number and type of LEDs in any suitable arrangement.
In an alternative embodiment, the light face of the LED luminaire is curved. The light face may be curved in 1, 2 or 3 dimensions.
In an alternative embodiment, the light face of the LED luminaire comprises a plurality of light non-transmitting surfaces each disposed between light transmitting surfaces.
A multi-light transmitting surfaces LED luminaire is thus provided. The present invention provides LED luminaires with multiple light fransmitting surfaces with light non-transmitting surfaces in between. A flat multi-panelled LED luminaire, constructed of light and non-light-transmitting panels, capable of a performance comparable to a single flat panel LED luminaire of the same nominal face area is provided. The flat multi-panelled LED luminaire may be constructed of two or more light-transmitting panel sets separated by one or more non-light-transmitting panels. A three-dimensionally curved surface LED luminaire, constructed of light and non-light-transmitting surfaces, comparable to a single flat panel LED luminaire of the same nominal face area is also provided. The curved multi-surface LED luminaire may be constructed of two or more light-transmitting surface sets separated by one or more non-light-transmitting surfaces.
A method of forming a light face of an LED luminaire is also provided, which comprises the steps of receiving a light non-transmitting panel, receiving a pair of light transmitting panels, and arranging the light non-transmitting panel and the 1 5 pair of light transmitting panels such that the light non-transmitting pane! is disposed between the pair of light transmitting panels.
Although illustrative embodiments of the invention have been disclosed in detail herein, with reference to the accompanying drawings, it is understood that the invention is not limited to the precise embodiments shown and that various changes and modifications can be effected therein by one skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims and their equivalents. aakns
