R÷ntgen-ray tubes.-The hardness of X-rays produced by a gas-containing tube with a non- heated cathode is regulated by a device controlling the speed of the electrons, and consisting of a metal ring e, Fig. 1, centrally arranged in the tube at right-angles to its axis, and connected to a terminal f. This terminal can be connected to the anti-cathode terminal either directly or through a variable resistance or a gap between needle points i, i', Fig. 4. One of these points is attached to the inside of an insulating casing h fitted over the end of the tube, while the other is carried by a pivoted arm j adjusted by a spirally-slotted disc k which is rotated by an external knob.
