Abstract

A method of hardening a crankshaft 10 which has at least one main journal 11 and at least one crankpin 13 with an oil duct formed between them, the crankshaft 10 being made from spheroidal graphite (SG) cast iron. The method comprises heating a portion of the crankshaft 10 by induction and subsequently cooling this portion using a gaseous medium. The portion of the crankshaft 10 can be heated to a temperature of at least 850 0C for about 20 seconds while rotating about an axis 12 defined by the main journal 11. The heated portion is then cooled for a duration of 5-120 seconds to a temperature of 150 0C or less using air at above atmospheric pressure.
