Abstract

A seating mat 1 comprises an upper surface 1a for supporting a user when seated and an array of upwardly projecting flexible papillae 2a-d positioned around a focus area 3 on the upper surface 1a. Each papilla 2a-d comprises a curved and tapered projection, with the tip end 22 of each projection having a longitudinal axis at an acute angle relative to the upper surface 1a. The papillae 2a-d are positioned such that all the tips are directed towards the focus area 3. The papillae may be arranged in concentric circles 4 around the focus area, with papillae size increasing with circle diameter. The mat may include a raised ridge (8, fig. 4) or a raised plateau (not shown). The mat may be integral with a chair/seat, or placed upon a seat or chair with a lower surface of the mat being textured to increase grip between the mat and the chair. The mat is intended to provide enhanced grip and improved posture when sat upon, with the shape and positioning of the papillae 2 encouraging a user to sit centrally on the focus area 3 and serving to grip the user's thighs to prevent slipping.
