Abstract

A radiolucent mattress system for heating a patient comprises: a mattress 22 having an inner mattress 10, e.g. a foam mattress or inflatable mattress, enclosed by a mattress cover, e.g. covered tray 24, to define an air chamber 30; an airflow driving device [14, Fig. 2a] in fluid communication with the mattress air chamber via an air chamber inlet 34a and an air chamber outlet 34b and operable to drive an airflow through the mattress air chamber from the air chamber inlet to the air chamber outlet; and a heat adjustment unit [28, Fig. 2a] for heating or cooling the airflow so as to control a temperature of the airflow within the mattress air chamber. Temperature sensors at may be used to determine the temperature of supplied and returned air. The internal mattress 10 may be an inflatable mattress with independently inflated cells 12(a-b) enabling the mattress system to provide a dynamic pressure-relieving system to patients. Use of radiolucent, i.e. not radio-opaque, materials enables x-rays to be taken of a patient lying on the mattress.
