Description

Description Title
Paint applying device The present invention relates to a paint applying device comprising a pump, a drive motor that drives the, pump, a housing that receives the pump and the drive motor, a suction line connected to the pump, a handle that has a gripping region and receives a paint applying roller and comprises a paint distributor, which delivers paint supplied to it onto the paint applying roller, and a pressure line that cOnnects the pump and the handle to one another.
Such paint applying devices, which are often also referred to as electric paint rollers, are prior art. They are used primarily during refurbishment and maintenance work to paint large surface areas, wherein in particular low-viscosity dispersion paints, latex paints, primers that are dilutable with water, varnishes, oils and water-based wood preservatives are processed.
A drawback of known paint applying devices of the type described in the introduction is that in the region of the handle the suction line leading to the paint distributor of a the handle often gets in the way of a person holding the handle, thus making handling difficult.
A first object of the present invention is therefore to S provide a paint applying device of the type described in the introduction, the handle of which nay be comfortably held without disturbing external influences.
In order to achieve this object, the present invention 10. provides a paint applying device of the type described in the introduction, which is characterized in that on the handle a plurality of line guides are provided, which optionally receive the pressure line and by means of which the pressure line, which is run out from the paint distributor, is guided in different directions. An important advantage of such line guides is that the pressure line is guided in a defined manner and fastened on the handle in such a way that it does not impede handling of the handle. The pressure line is moreover protected from external influences. Thanks to the plurality of line guides that point in different directions from the paint distributor, the pressure line may moreover be disposed manually by the user in the line guide, in which the pressure line causes the user the least interference during the planned painting work. In other words, the guidance of the pressure line in the region of the handle may be adapted by the user to the subsequent operation.
According to a development of the present invention at least three line guides are provided, wherein a first line guide points in a first direction, in particular in longitudinal direction of the gripping region, and the other two line guides starting from this first direction drift apart from one another in an arc-shaped manner. The user accordingly has at his disposal three options of disposing the pressure line, which is run out from the paint distributor, on the handle, namely centrally or S laterally to the right or to the left. A lateral guidance of the pressure line is advantageous for example if the paint reservoir is also positioned laterally in relation to the user. The central guidance of the pressure line in longitudinal direction of the gripping region is used in particular if a rod-shaped handle extension is disposed on the handle to enable the user to use the paint roller to paint surface areas that lie outside of his natural reach.
In this situation it is mostly very agreeable if the pressure line is guided at least partially along the handle extension. For this purpose further pressure-line retaining clips or the like may be provided on the handle extension.
In a preferred manner the line guides are configured as grooves. The line guide may accordingly in sections be recessed in the handle so that it does not protrude in a troublesome manner.
The grooves advantageously comprise at least one clamping projection for fixing the pressure line accommodated therein. The pressure line is accordingly not easily releasable from the line guide selected by the user.
A further problem of known paint applying devices of the type described in the introduction is that such paint applying devices, which do not have an integrated paint reservoir, always have to be transported independently of the paint reservoir. This is very tiresome particularly if the paint reservoir and the paint applying device repeatedly have to be moved a few metres after painting part of a surface area. If, on the other hand, an integral paint reservoir is provided, it has to be filled and also refilled with paint. When pouring the paint, however, spills often occur, which is not desirable.
Against the background of this problem a further object of the present invention is to provide a paint applying device of the type described in the introduction, which enables easy transport of paint applying device and paint reservoir without the paint reservoir having to be filled by pouring paint.
In order to achieve this object the present invention provides a paint applying device of the type described in the introduction, which is characterized in that the housing comprises a hang-on device that is positionable on the edge of an external paint reservoir. With the aid of such a hang-on device the external paint reservoir and the paint, applying device may be connected to one another, thereby enabling a joint transport of these components. In this way handling of the paint applying device is made very much easier. Thanks to the use of an external paint reservoir, moreover, there is no need to pour paint. Once an external paint reservoir is empty, it need merely be * exchanged for a full paint reservoir.
According to a development of the present invention the hand-on device comprises a hang-on clip of a hook-like configuration that may simply be placed over the edge of an external paint reservoir.
The hang-on clip is advantageously provided with a receiving slot configured so as to receive a reservoir handle. The reservoir handle guided by means of the receiving slot accordingly prevents the hang-on clip from sliding along the edge of the external paint reservoir.
According to a development of the present invention a standing foot is provided on the housing. Such a standing foot guarantees that the paint applying device is self-supporting.
A shifting-and locking device is advantageously provided, which is configured so as to vary and lack a spacing between the hang-on device and the standing foot. The position of the standing foot may accordingly be adapted to the height of the external paint reservoir in such a way that the standing foot and the paint reservoir base are disposed at the same level and may accordingly be laid down jointly on the ground. The shifting-and locking device may comprise for example components that are guided linearly in one another and are lockable in steps or steplessly in various positions, for example using an adjustable detent locking mechanism or continuously adjustable friction gearing. As such shifting-and locking devices are known in a wide variety of forms from the background art, a more detailed description of them is not provided.
A further drawback of known paint applying devices of the 3a type described in the introduction is that in particular the suction line and the pressure line after use of the paint applying device have to be separately stored and/or stowed. In the event of improper handling the lines may moreover become kinked and damaged.
Against the background of this problem, a further object of the present invention is to provide a paint applying device of the type described in the introduction that reliably prevents the lines from becoming damaged during storage of the.device.
In order to achieve this object the present invention provides a paint applying device of the type described in the introduction, which is characterized in that on the housing at least one take-up surface for take-up of the suction line and/or the pressure line and/or a power cable is defined, which extends in particular along the housing circumference. The lines may accordingly be stowed correctly without there being any danger of improper handling.
According to a development of the present invention a plurality of take-upsurfaces subdivided by at least one dividing wall are provided. Separate take-up surfaces for the suctionline, the pressure line and/or the power cable may accordingly be defined.
In a preferred manner a standing foot is provided on the housing. Such a standing foot guarantees that the paint applying device is self-supporting.
Yet a further drawback of known paint applying devices of the type described in the introduction is that during painting breaks laying down the handle is mostly problematical.
In order to achieve this object the present invention provides a paint applying device of the type described in the introduction, which is characterized in that at least one handle rest is provided, which receives the handle in a * defined manner. A proper handle rest is accordingly constantly available to the user.
* According to a development of the present invention the handle rest has a recess that is adapted in shape to a portion of the handle, or vice versa. In this way a secure hold of the handle in the handle rest is guaranteed.
The recess advantageously has surfaces that are disposed at an angle to one another and prevent a relative rotational movement between handle and handle rest. The handle may accordingly be laid down in a defined position, which the handle cannot easily leave.
According to a variant of the present invention the handle rest is formed on a separately provided holding device that comprises a fastening device for fastening to the edge of a paint reservoir. The paint remaining on the paint roller may therefore drip back into the paint reservoir while the handle is resting on the handle rest.
In a preferred manner the holding device comprises a line guide for optionally receiving the suction line, with the result that the suction line is also guided in a defined 3D manner into the paint reservoir.
* A handle rest may be alternatively or additionally formed on the housing.
B
For actuating known paint applying devices of the type described in the introduction, these comprise at least one actuating switch that is disposed on the housing or on the S handle. Given such an arrangement, however the actuating switch is not readily accessible in all painting situations, for example if a handle extension is disposed on the handle.
Against the background of this problem a further objedt of the present invention is to provide a paint applying device of the type described in the introduction, in which the actuation and contrTol of the pump may be effected comfortably and easily in every work situation.
In order to achieve this object, the present invention provides a paint applying device of the type described in the introduction that comprises a handle extension, which for lengthening the handle is fastenable detachably thereto, wherein the paint applying device is characterized in that a separate remote operator control unit is provided for actuating and/or controlling the pump, and that both on the handle and on the handle extension a remote operator control unit mount that receives the remote operator control unit in a defined manner is configured for optionally disposing the remote operator control unit. In other words, the remote operator control unit may be disposed selectively on the handle or on the handle extension. Alternatively the remote operator control unit may also be carried along separately by the user. The positioning of the remote operator control unit is accordingly optimally adaptable to every conceivable work situation, with the result that a very good handling capability of the paint applying device according to the invent ion is achieved.
According to a development of the present invention th? remote operator control unit mount is formed in each case by a receiving trough, which is provided in the handle and in the handle extension and in which the remote operator control unit may be received in particular in a latching manner, wherein other fastening mechanisms are also conceivable. The provision of receiving troughs is advantageous in that theremote operator control unit does not protrude excessively from the handle and/or from the handle extension.
In a preferred manner the outward facing surface of the remote operator control unit accommodated in one of the remote operator control unit mounts is at least partially adapted in shape to the external contour of adjacent surfaces of the handle and/or handle extension. The remote operator control unit in the regions adapted in shape therefore verges seamlessly into the handle and/or handle extension.
According to a development of the present invention the remote operator control unit comprises at least one actuating switch, in particular a pressure-operated switch.
Such a pressure-operated switch is very easy to operate.
The remote operator control unit advantageously has an autonomous power supply, in particular in the form of batteries or accumulators, thereby further facilitating the handling capability of the remote operator control unit.
Paint applying devices of the type described in the introduction are further known, the handle of which may, if the user wishes, be lengthened by means of a substantially rod-shaped and optionally telescopically designed handle extension. Such handle extensions enable the processing of surface areas that arenot within the natural reach of the user and are accordingly accessible only with the aid of ladders. Such handle extensions normally entail two-handed operator control. For this purpose, a corresponding grip is advantageously formed on a free end of the handle extension. The other hand then grips the handle extension in another position closer to the handle.
A drawback when using such handle extensions is that the second hand that is not holding the grip of the handle extension cannot ergonomically grip the handle extension, which particularly in the case of prolonged operation of the paint applying device feels uncomfortable and may lead to premature fatigue of the user or even to cramp in the hand. A further drawback is that, given use of the known handle extensions, the pressure line is not adequately guided and fastened. There is therefore the risk of the pressure line becoming kinked, twisted or pinched. Such damage to the preSsure line may lead to interruptions of 25, the paint feed or even to complete failure of the paint applying device.
With regard to this problem a further object of the present invention is to provide a paint applying device of the type described in the introduction that comprises an easy-to-handle handle extension, which is configured in such a way that the risk of damage to the pressure line is low.
In order to achieve this object the present invention provides a paint applying device of the type described in the introduction that comprises a substantially rod-shaped handle extension, which for lengthening the handle is fastenable detachably thereto, characterized in that the handle extension has on its one free end a coupling part, which with a corresponding coupling part disposed on the free end of the handle forms a detachable connection, and on its other free end a main grip defining a gripping surface as well as an auxiliary grip defining a gripping surface, wherein extending between the coupling part, the auxiliary grip and the main grip are a connecting rod and a telescopic rod guided therein. Thanks to the arrangement of an auxiliary grip the handle extension may be gripped by 15, a user in a defined, comfortable manner, thereby substantially improving the handling of the paint applying device according to the invention.
According to a development of the present invention the coupling part of the handle extension comprises a cone, which is insertable in a recess of the coupling part of the handle and in the inserted state is fixable by means of a retaining element, in particular in the form of a transverse pin or a screw. Such a configuration of the coupling parts is notable in particular for its simple construction and ease of handling. Other known coupling parts may of course alternatively be used.
In a preferred manner the telescopic rod is guided so as to be locked against rotation in the connecting rod, with the result that the connecting rod and the telescopic rod are aligned always in a defined manner relative to one another.
The auxiliary grip advantageously comprises a friction coupling, by means of which a relative position of the connecting rod and the telescopic rod guided therein is lockable, wherein the friction coupling preferably comprises a clamping cone that is actuable by means of a rotational movement of the auxiliary grip. Such a friction coupling has proved particularly practicable.
According to a further development of the present invention, on the auxiliary grip a line guide, in particular in the form of a groove extending in longitudinal direction of the auxiliary grip, is formed, which preferably comprises at least one. clamping projection for fixing the pressure line accommodated therein. The pressure line may accordingly be recessed in the groove so that it does not get in the way of the user when he grasps the auxiliary grip. The at least one clamping projection in this case effects the fixing. Alternatively or additionally a line guide in the form of at least one line holder that engages around the connecting rod or the telescopic rod may be provided, which is in particular of an axially displaceable and preferably lockable configuration. For locking purposes, a spring or the like may for example be used, which ensures a specific sluggishness of the displacement direction of the line holder.
Further features and advantages of the present invention emerge from the following description of an embodiment of a paint applying device according to the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings.
The drawings show in Figure 1 a perspective view of a housing of a paint applying device according to an embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 a further perspective view of the housing represented in Figure 1; Figures 3-5 plan views of a handle of the paint applying device that show options of guiding a suction line along the handle; and Figure 6 a perspective view of the paint applying device, which is disposed on an external paint reservoir; Figure 7 a perspective plan view of the handle provided with a handle extension; and Figure 8 a perspective bottom view of the handle provided with the handle extension.
Figures 1 to 8 show a paint applying device 10 according to an embodiment of the present invention and/or individual components thereof. The paint applying device 10 is used primarily during refurbishment and maintenance work to paint large surface areas, wherein for example low-viscosity dispersion paints, latex paints, primers that are dilutable with water, varnishes, oils and water-based wood preservatives are processed as a working medium. The paint applying device 10 comprises a pump for feeding the working medium as well as a drive motor that drives the pump, wherein the pump and the drive motor are conventionally accommodated in a housing 12 and are not represented in detail in the figures. The paint applying device 10 further comprises a suction line 14 connected to the pump, a handle 18 that comprises a gripping region 16 and receives a paint applying roller 20 and comprises a paint distributor 22, which delivers the working medium fed to it onto the paint applying roller 22, and a pressure line 24 that connects the pump and the handle 18 to one another.
The housing 12 for receiving the pump and the driving motor is of a substantially box-like configuration and has in the upper region a handle 26 that may easily be grasped by a user in order to transport the paint applying device 10.
Provided on the housing 12 and spaced apart from the housing base is a standing foot 28 that accommodates a shifting-and locking device 30. The shifting-and locking device 30 in the present case comprises two components 32 and 34 that are guided linearly in one another, wherein the component 32 is formed integrally with the standing foot 28. The component 34 is movable steplessly up and down along the component 32 and lockable steplessly in iarious positions thereon. For this purpose, friction gearing that is not represented in detail is provided. As the construction of such shifting-and locking devices is
adequately known in the background art, a detailed
description of it is not provided below. Formed on the top end of the component 34 is a hang-on device 36, which makes it possible to position the housing 12 on an edge of an external paint reservoir 38, as is shown in Figure 6 and will be described in greater detail below. The hang-on device 36 comprises a hang-on clip 40 of a hook-like configuration that may simply be placed over the edge of a paint reservoir 38. Formed on the hang-on clip is a receiving slot 42, which in the state, in which the hang-on device 36 is in engagement with the edge of a paint reservoir 38, may receive a reservoir handle 44. Formed on the circumference of the housing 12 are two take-up surfaces 46 and 48, which extend in each case along the housing circumference and are partially separated from one another by a dividing wall 50. The take-up surfaces 46 and 48 are used to take up the suction line 14, on the one hand, and the pressure line 24, on the other hand, when the paint applying device 10 is not in operation. To supply power to the paint applying device 10 a power cable 52 is used, which nay be withdrawn from the housing 12 and by actuating the pushbutton 54 may in a known manner be drawn back into the housing 12. The power cable 52 may however alternatively simply be wound onto one of the take-up surfaces 46 or 48. For switching the pump and/or the drive motor on and off the housing 12 is provided with an on/off switch 56.
The handle 18 consists of the gripping region 16 and a roller carrier housing 58, which is integrally connected to the gripping region 16 and holds on the one hand the p&int distributor 22, which is not represented in detail, and on the other hand the paint applying roller 20. The paint distributor 22 is coupled to the pressure line 24 so that a working medium may be supplied through the pressure line 24 and the paint distributcr 22 to the paint applying roller 20. On the upper side of the handle 18 a total of three line guides 60, 62 and 64 are provided, which optionally receive the pressure line 24 and point out in different directions from the paint distributor 22. The first line guide 60 extends in longitudinal direction of the gripping region 16 right up to the free end thereof. The other two line guides 62 and 64 drift apart from one another in an arc-shaped manner from the first line guide 60. The user therefore has at his disposal three possible ways in which the pressure line 24, which is run out of the paint distributor 22, may be disposed and/or fixed on the handle 18, namely centrally, laterally to the right or laterally to the left, as is represented in Figures 3 to 5. Each line guide 60, 62 and 64 is configured as a groove so that the pressure line 24 may in sections be recessed in the handle 18 and not protrude in a troublesome manner. The grooves are adapted to the shape of the pressure line 24 in such a way that the guiding hand of the user additionally holds the pressure line 24 in the corresponding groove without the pressure line 24 becoming pinched and without the guiding hand being exposed to unpleasant pressure loads. Each groove further comprises one or more clamping projections 66 for fixing the pressure line 24 accommodated therein As is represented in Figures 7 and 8, the paint applying device further comprises a substantially rod-shaped handle extension 68, which for optionally lengthening the handle 18 may be fastened detachably thereto. The handle extension 68 has on its one free end a coupling part 70, which with a corresponding coupling part 72 disposed on the free end of the handle 18 forms a detachable connection.
The coupling extension 68 of the handle extension 68 comprises a cone1 which is not represented in detail and is insertable into a recess, which is likewise not represented in detail, of the coupling part 72 of the handle 18 and in the inserted state is fixable by means of a retaining element 74, which in the present case is formed by a screw.
On the other free end of the handle extension 68 a main grip 78 defining a gripping surface 76 is provided. The handle extension 68 further comprises an auxiliary grip 82 defining a gripping surface 80, wherein extending between the coupling part 70, the auxiliary grip 82 and the main grip 78 are a connecting rod 84, which is positively connected to the main grip 78, and a telescopic rod 86 guided in the connecting rod 84. The telescopic rod 86 is guided so as to be locked against rotation in the connecting rod 84, this being realizable for example by means of a special external contour of the telescopic rod 86 and a corresponding internal contour of the connecting rod 84. The auxiliary grip 82 is held rotatably on the connecting rod 84. In longitudinal direction, however, it cannot be moved relative to the connecting rod 84. It comprises a friction coupling, which is not represented in detail and by means of which a relative position of the connecting rod 84 and the telescopic rod 86 guided therein is lockable, wherein the friction coupling preferably comprises a clamping cone that in a known manner is actuable by means of a rotational movement of the auxiliary grip 82. On the main grip 78 and on the auxiliary grip 82 in each case a line guide 88, 90 configured as a groove is provided, wherein the line guides 88 and 90 are in principle configured analogously to the line guide 60 provided on the handle 18. A further line guide in the form of a line holder 92 that engages round the telescopic rod 86 is moreover disposed, which is configured so as to be axially displaceable on the telescopic rod 86 and lockable thereon. The line guides 88, 90 and 92 are used to fix the pressure line 24 selectively along the entire handle extension 68.
For actuating and ôontrolling the pump a separate remote operator control unit 84 is provided, which comprises a pressure-operated switch 96. By means of the pressure-operated switch 96 the pump may be switched on and off and in this way the volume rate of flow of the paint may be controlled. If the user presses the pressure-operated switch 96, paint is fed. If the user lets go of the pressure-operated switch 96, feeding of the paint is interrupted. The remote operator control unit 94 is supplied by means of an autonomous power supply in the form of batteries or accumulators.
Both on the handle 18 and on the handle extension 68 a remote operator control unit mount 98 for receiving the remote operator control unit 94 in a defined manner is formed, so that the remote operator control unit 94 may be disposed selectively on the handle or on the handle extension 68. The remote operator control unit 94 may of course alternatively be carried along separately by the user. The remote operator control unit mounts 98 are formed in each case by a receiving trough 100 that is provided in the handle 18 and in the handle extension 68 and into which the remote operator control unit 94 may be received by means of a detent connection, which is not represented in detail. The outward facing surface of the remote operator control unit 94 received into end of the remote operator control unit mounts 98 is adapted in shape to the external contour of adjacent surfaces of the handle 18 and/or the handle extension 68 so that the remote operator control unit verges seamlessly into the adjacent regions of the handle 18 and/or the handle extension 68.
As is shown in Figure 6, the paint applying device 10 further comprises a handle rest 102, which receives the handle 18 in a defined manner and is formed integrally with a holding device 104. The handle rest 102 comprises a recess 106 that is adapted in shape to the portions of the handle 18 that are to be received. More precisely, the recess 106 has surfaces that are disposed at an angle to one another and prevent a relative rotational movement between handle 18 and handle rest 102, although this is not represented in detail here. The holding device 104 comprises a fastening device 108 of a hook-like configuration that may simply be placed over the edge of a paint reservoir 38. Integrated into the fastening device 108 is a further line guide 110 in the form of a groove, which is used to receive the suction line 14.
In order to set the paint applying device 10 in operation, first the suction line 14 and the pressure line 24 are unwound from the associated take-up surfaces 46 and 48.
The power cable 52 is further withdrawn from the housing 12 and the associated plug is plugged into a socket-outlet.
Then, as is shown in Figure 6, the housing 12 is fitted with the aid of the hang-on device 36 on the edge of a paint reservoir in such a way that the paint reservoir handle 44 extends through receiving slot 42. The hang-on device 36 is accordingly only able to shift to a limited extent along the paint reservoir edge. Then by actuating the shifting-and locking device 30 the spacing a between the housing base and the standing foot 28 is adjusted in such a way that the standing foot 28 comes into contact with the ground. Both the paint reservoir 38 and the housing 12 accordingly rest securely on the ground. Next, the holding device 104 with the integrated handle rest 102 is fastened to the edge of the paint reservoir 38 by placing the fastening device 108 onto the reservoir edge.
The suction line 14 is then fixed at the line guide 110 of the fastening device 108 and dipped into the paint-filled paint reservoir 38. Depending on the activity that is to be carried out, the user can then decide whether or not to dispose the. handle extension 68 on the handle 18. If the handle extension 68 is not used, the remote operator control unit 94 is inserted into the remote operator control unit mount 98 provided on the handle 18. The remote operator control unit 94 may accordingly be easily operated by the user while he is holding the gripping region 16 of the handle 18. If, on the other hand, the handle extension 68 is used, then the remote operator control unit 94 is inserted into the corresponding remote operator control unit mount 68 of the handle extension 68 so that the user may operate this while holding the gripping surface 76 of the main grip 78.
Depending on the work to be carried out, the user may further select the line guide 60 62 or 64 of the handle 18, in which he wishes to dispose the pressure line 24. If the user is using the handle 18 without the handle extension 68, he will normally opt for one of the line guides 62 or 64 that guide the pressure line 24 towards one or the other side of the handle 18. Mostly it is the side where the paint reservoir 38 is also disposed in relation to the user that is the most advantageous. If, on the other hand, the handle extension 68 is used, then the pressure line 24 may be disposed in the line guide 60 of the handle 18, in the hose holder 92 and in the respective line guides 88 and 90 of the main grip 78 and the auxiliary grip 92. The pressure line 24 accordingly does not get in the way and is protected from damage.
The user may then switch on the paint applying device 10 by actuating the on/off switch 56 and start painting by actuating the pressure-operated switch 96.
During work breaks the user may lay down the handle 18 - optionally with the handle extension 68 disposed thereon -in the handle rest 102. Residual paint on the paint applying roller 20 may then drip back into the paint reservoir 38.
On completion of a partial surface area that is to be painted, the entire arrangement may easily be transported by the user taking hold of the paint reservoir handle 42 and lifting and carrying the paint reservoir 38 together with the paint applying device 10 held thereon.
Thanks to the line guides 60, 62, 64, 88 and 90 and the hose holder 92, the guiding of the pressure line 24 passing out of the paint distributor may be adapted to every conceivable work situation. The pressure line 24 accordingly does not get in the way of the user and may be protected from damage.
The hang-on device 36 provided on the housing 12 is advantageous in that the housing 12 may be transported together with the paint reservoir 38. Relocating the paint reservoir 38 and the housing 12 on completion of a partial surface area that is to be painted is accordingly no longer a problem.
A further important advantage of the paint applying device is that by virtue of the plurality of remote operator control unit mounts 98 the arrangement of the remote operator control unit 94 may likewise be adapted to the work that is to be carried out, wherein comfortable handling is always guaranteed.
The fact that not only a main grip 78 but also an auxiliary grip 82 are provided on the handle extension 68 results in the user always being able to hold the handle extension 68 ergonomically using both hands.
Thanks to the take-up surfaces 46 and 48, proper and trouble-free stowing of the suction line 14 and the pressure line 24 is possible without there being any risk of the lines becoming kinked or otherwise damaged.
