Envelopes, making. - In an envelope-making machine of the type in which a pile of envelope blanks is placed upon a table which is automatically moved upwards as the blanks are withdrawn by a vertically reciprocating picker 1 which also gums the bottom flap of the blank, the picker 1 is arrested in its upward stroke by a leather washer 24 so that a gumming-roller 30 which is reciprocated horizontally below the picker is maintained in contact with its under face. The picker which is carried upon a crosshead 3 is driven from the main shaft 22 by means of an eccentric 21, rod 20, arms 16, 14 and rod 10, and to allow for the lost motion of the picker the rod 10 is, in one form, resiliently connected to the crosshead 3, having sliding movement in a. sleeve 9 carried by the crosshead, a spring 25 being interposed between the sleeve 9 and an abutment 12 on the rod. In a modification the rod is positively connected to the crosshead, but the eccentric rod 20 is resiliently connected to the yoke member 19 which engages the end of the arm 16. The gumming-roller 30 is reciprocated by levers 32, 36 which are actuated by rod 37 and lever 38, from a cam 41 driven by the main shaft, the roller being resiliently supported by a U-shaped frame 50 mounted upon springs 51.
