Abstract

A Wise Personal Digital Assistant (WPDA) makes it easier for blind and vision-impaired passengers to obtain information about bus timings, locations and destinations. The technology passes real-time information from a talking bus stop to a handheld WPDA which also uses its in-built GPS to inform the user of his/her location, producing aural, spoken messages as its output. The WPDA communicates with the talking bus stop when it is within its vicinity and uses Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing operating around the 5 GHz frequency. The WPDA is Bluetooth (RTM) and WiFi (RTM) enabled and is user-friendly due to its large tactile keys. It also has capacity for additional memory storage and auxiliary devices such as headphones. Aside from its stated purpose, the WPDA also provides useful additional features, such as telephone, talking books and radio. Consequently, the WPDA eliminates the need for carrying other items such as phones on person.

Background

Blind and vision impaired people are often too dependent on assistance and their own knowledge when travelling on buses. Such passengers require up to date information on the timings and whereabouts of local buses. Currently, Talking Bus Stops' have been installed in some UK cities and these can provide information on the time of arrival of a particular bus. However, this technology is only restricted to the bus stop itself. Consequently, the demand for assistive technology for blind and vision impaired passengers remains strong. This invention is aimed at providing the solution precisely required In this

field.

Statement of invention

The Wise-Personal Digital Assistant (WPDA) aims to facilitate easier bus location for blind and vision impaired people (B&VIP). This invention works by using W-Fi technology to collect information from a Talking Bus Stop and then relays this to the B&VIP in real time, using touch-tone based Interactive Voice Response (IVR). Furthermore, the WPDA processes data with its iri-buift GPS in order to inform the user of his/her own position.

Advantages The WPDA can provide the following services: * Inform the B&VIP of his/her own location in relation to the surrounding streets/roads.

* Inform the B&VIP of buses in the vicinity of the WPDA.

* Storage of frequently visited places and routes in a favourites' menu, with dynamic updating as.

required.

* WPDA can be used as a mobile phone, thereby eliminating the need to carry one.

* Talking Book library * Radio As can be seen, the WPDA provides new benefits to B&VIP as well as combining the functionality of several other devices into one handheld unit.

Introduction to drawings of WPDA

The standard WPDA folding unit is represented in the drawings below.

Figure 1 shows the Bus Navigation interface (BNI), while Figure 2 shows the Mobile Phone Interface (MP1). Only one interface can be activated at a time, preventing any accidental dialling of calls when the BNI is in use. The inner appearance of the WPDA when flipped open, is shown in Figure 3. This schematic also shows some of the key external components required for the WPDA to function, such as the battery, SIM cards and memory cards.

Detailed description

The BNI is fitted with a touch screen, which a vision impaired or normally sighted person can operate using a stylus or finger. A tactile keypad, also shown in Figure 1 with the symbol key, is built in for the convenience of blind users.

A tactile keypad is also used for the MPI and it is shown with its key in Figure 2.

The numbers are arranged in conventional phone keypad fashion. Unlike the BNI, a simple digital display screen with cursor functionality is installed for the MPI.

Secure space is included inside the WPDA to accommodate the SIM card and rechargeable battery, as seen in Figure 3. This can be accessed by flip-opening the unit. Further slots are incorporated in the sides of the WPDA unit for additional memory cards and an extra SIM card. Finally, slots are built in for auxiliary items such as U$B cables, battery charger and headphones.

Claims (10)

  1. Appendix Q to WPDA for B&VIP Claims for Wise. PDA (WPDA)' The following claims regarding the WPDA are filed: 1. A WPDA operating around the 5 GHz frequency, using Orthogonal Frequency DMsion Multiplexing (OFDM) techniques.
  2. 2. A WPDA that is Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled, with an in-built Global Positioning System (GPS).
  3. 3. A WPDA according to claim 1 and daim 2 that is capable of data transfer communication with devices such as Talking Bus Stops and buses, within a suitable vicinity determined by the frequency used by the WPD&
  4. 4. A WPDA that provides accurate calculations and reliable aural information to the user.
  5. 5. The talking books library of the WPDA can be updated when connected to a PC/laptop.
  6. 6. A WPDA is new innovative technology, yet it does not require changes to the hardware structure of Talking Bus Stops, Buses or installation of new data transfer devices such as antennas.
  7. 7. The WPDA software can be updated by the software vendors.
  8. 8. A WPDA that can be supplemented with additional high capacity storage memory cards (40 GB plus).
  9. 9. A WPDA according to the preceding claims that is protected from accidental activation of the touch screen, by attaching an optional sliding cover.
  10. 10. A WPOA according to the preceding claims, that has both a standard keypad and touch screen and is therefore user-friendly towards the blind, vision-impaired and normally-sighted alike.
