Abstract

A floor mounted mobile air circulator comprising an air driving mechanism 2 (i.e. fan, turbine, compressor etc...) that draws air 3 in from an inlet orifice 4 at or near a floor and communicating the air from the air driving mechanism 2 through an upright/vertical air flow directing duct 6 and through an outlet orifice 5 at a sufficient velocity towards a ceiling to displace heated air trapped adjacent the ceiling so as to reduce a differential temperature gradient of the air between the floor and ceiling. Air may be drawn through lateral orifices (fig 2). The air circulator may be powered by mains electricity, an integral battery (fig 3) or separate battery (fig 4). Temperature sensors may record the air temperature at floor and ceiling levels and subsequently control the flow of air as a result of the recorded temperature gradient between the floor and ceiling (figs 5 & 6). The air circulator may comprise of a hose connection so that the air circulator may be connected to pressurised air supply (fig 8).

Description

TITLE Vertical Air Mover

BACKGROUND

When a room is heated a considerable temperature gradient can exist between floor and ceiling. This effect requires a greater consumption of energy than would be required if the temperature was more equally distributed between floor and ceiling. There would also be a reduction in heat loss through the ceiling fabric as result of the lower temperature at the ceiling. A lower thermostat setting to reach a required warmth in the comfort zone for the occupants would again contribute to an energy saving.

Unlike other devices this invention addresses the problem by creating a column of air with sufficient velocity and integrity to be directed vertically upward to the ceiling without the need for continuous ducting to guide the said column so displacing the warmer air trapped at the ceiling level thus equalising the room temperature between lower and upper layers of air in a room.

STATEMENT OF INVENTION

This invention relates to a mobile floor standing and self supporting device which creates a column of air that is made to move vertically upward without the need for continuous ducting or physical containment of the vertical path between floor and ceiling for the air column. By drawing air in at a low level and expelling the column of air some distance higher with sufficient velocity and integrity to travel to the ceiling level unaided thereby displacing the warmer air trapped at the ceiling level

ADVANTAGES

Other devices which address this problem either require to be supported from the ceiling and drive warm air down to lower levels and may require a level of skilled installation or would be fixed in a permanent position or have ducting to guide and enclose the air column which would require a support from walls or floor and ceiling and would not be stable otherwise.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

This invention is described by the following drawings figures I to 8.

Referring to Figure (1). This invention describes a Vertical Air Mover which draws cooler air (3) from a lower level of a room into the intake orifice (4) of the air mover. The air mover is floor standing and consists of a housing (l)for the air drive mechanism (2)and a short duct (6)to shape and direct the column of air vertically upwards. The air is driven into a concentrated column by an electrical driven mechanism with a plurality of rotating shaped blades such as a fan or turbine(2).designed to push the air through the short duct(6). The column of air (3) is directed vertically upward towards the ceiling by the short duct (6) exiting at the top orifice (5). The duct has the function of directing and concentrating the air column and causing the air to flow from the air drive mechanism to the exit orifice (5) at greater velocity than that which enters the bottom intake orifice(4) maintaining sufficient concentration and velocity to enable a displacement of the air near the ceiling of a room.

The air column can be created solely by a primary air mover such as a fan as in figure (I) or the column can be created by utilising the primary air mover as an integral part of an air amplification system benefiting from the Coanda Effect as shown in figure (2). The expelled air column (7) consists of the primary air flow (l)taken in at a lower orifice(2) compressed by the air drive mechanism (3) onto the curved surface (4) causing an amplification of secondary air flow (5) through the lateral input orifices( 6).

The Vertical Air Mover can be electrically powered by a battery pack (I)housed in the device as in figure (3) or in a separate power bank as in figure (4) or by chord from the main electrical supply as in figure (1).

Figure (5)shows one method of control.Internal sensors (1) and (2) monitor the ceiling (4)and floor(3) temperature gradient and control the amount of air being moved by the Vertical Air Mover Alternatively external monitoring can control the amount of air being moved as in figure (6) with the temperature in formation sent to the air mover remotely by a sender (2) to a receiver(4).The sender collates temperature information from a ceiling (6) by sensor(3) and a floor (5) by a sensor at (2) or (4).

Figure (7) shows an other method of creating the air column utilising an integral compressor assembly (I) and air storage vessel (2) as a primary air supply. Alternatively a hose connection (1) to a mainstream source of pressurised air supply as in figure (8) can supply the primary air source for the air amplification.
