Detailed Description.
There now follows a series of text referring to attached drawings to describe the build and operation of the portable oxygen replenishment device.
The assembly consists of a suitcase, a donor oxygen cylinder, a safety cage, an exhaust system and a manifold system.
Suitcase.
The oxygen transfilling equipment is housed within a suitcase to make the assembly easily portable. See figure 1. Figure 2 shows the suitcase with the lid removed. The mesh of the safety cage is shown in part detail to allow the reader to see the donor oxygen cylinder inside The suit case has an exhaust system to dissipate pressure safely in event cylinder failure or when venting excess oxygen after filling process. The exhaust system components are housed in a vent chambers at either end of the suitcase. See figures 5,6 and 7.
Vressure relief valves and vents are positioned opposite each other to neutralize thrust during gas exhaust. See figure 2 (C) The suitcase is made of composite material and designed to control the exhaust of gas in a safe manner in event of cylinder failure.
A set of seven latches secure the suitcase when in transit and during the transf'illing process.
Wheels are fitted to one end of the case and a handle to the other for portability. An additional handle is fitted for lifting.
Donor Oxygen Cylinder.
A suitable oxygen cylinder is fitted in the safety cage in the suitcase. See figure 2 (A).
The cylinder has a shut off valve fitted which can be operated remotely from the fill panel. The position of this valve is figure 3 (A).
The cylinder is removable so that it can be replenished externally when its pressure drops below that of the portable oxygen cylinders it is filling. A replacement cylinder can be fitted in its place.
The cylinder capacity and pressure rating will be as large as possible to get the maximum amount of refi1ls between removals.
Page 2 Portable Breathing Oxygen Replenishment case with exhaust system.
A composite cylinder would be preferred for their strength to weight ratio.
The cylinder is secured by two clamps in the safety cage.
Figure 2 shows the donor oxygen cylinder (A) fitted in the safety cage (B) in the suitcase with the lid removed. The mesh of the safety cage is shown in part detail to allow the reader to see the donor oxygen cylinder inside Figure 3 shows the donor oxygen cylinder (I) fitted to the manifold with all other components removed.
Safety Cage.
The safety cage is built to industry safety standards. Figure 4 shows the safety cage removed from the suitcase.
Figure 2 (B) shows the safety cage in the suit case (with the suitcase lid removed) and with the donor cylinder inside. The mesh of the safety cage is shown in part detail to allow the reader to see the donor oxygen cylinder inside.
The cage houses the donor cylinder and the portable cylinder being filled. The two cylinders are segregated by a section of cage through the middle forming two compartments.
The cage has lids over each compartment which are secured with suitable clamps to maintain the integrity of the cage.
Each section of cage has straps for securing the cylinders.
Manifold system.
The manifold system consists of pipe work, valves, adaptors, donor cylinder pressure gauge, fill pressure gauge, fill panel, vent valve, oxygen analyzer, a remote donor cylinder isolator and a regulator. All components must be oxygen compatible and oxygen clean.
The manifold is housed in the lower half of the suitcase at one end, with its fill panel available to the user. Figure 3 shows the manifold system (2) fitted to the donor oiygen cylinder (1) Page 3 Portable Breathing Oxygen Replenishment case with exhaust system.
MANIFOLD SYSTEM CONTINTJED
I.An adaptor (A) connects to the donor cylinder (1) and pipe work connects this to the donor cylinder pressure gauge (B).
2. Pipe work then connects to the regulator (C) and from the regulator the pipe work a branch connects to the fill pressure gauge (D).
3. From the fill pressure gauge, pipe work connects to the fill rate control valve (E), from hers runs the fill pipe (F) which has an adaptor on its end suitable for connecting to the portable oxygen cylinder.
4. The vent valve (G) is branched off between the regulator and fill rate control valve.
5. An oxygen purity analyzer is mounted in the till panel and a pipe runs into the fill cage. A pre set regulator controls the flow of oxygen to the analyzer in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and a calibration gas valve isolates the analyzer when not in use. This is not shown in figure 3 for clarity but the schematic diagram on the fill panel in figure 8 shows how it is orientated. The analyzer is permanently linked to the donor cylinder and can be connected to the portable oxygen cylinder after filling to check purity.
Use of the manifold system.
The manifold system is operated via the fill panel shown in figure 8.
1. The donor oxygen cylinder is turned on using the remote actuator (8) 2. Oxygen analyzer (6) is turned on.
3. Open calibration gas valve and calibrate oxygen analyzer.
4. Close calibration gas valve.
5. Connect portable cylinder to oxygen analyzer and measure residual oxygen purity.
Purge if necessary.
6. Set fill pressure using regulator (5) and till pressure gauge (1).
7. Open fill rate valve (4) and replenish cylinder.
8. Back regulator (8) off to zero pressure.
9. Vent excess oxygen by opening vent valve (2).
10. Close donor oxygen cylinder using remote actuator (S).
Page 4 Portable breathing Oxygen Replenishment case with exhaust system.
Exhaust system.
At either end of the suitcase base an exhaust system is installed. See figure 5 and 6.
These exhaust compartments are sealed from the rest of the case, the only way that oxygen pressure can enter is through the exhaust receivers.
Each exhaust system consists of two receivers (A), a flame arrestor (D), a series of jet pumps, connecting pipes and a diffuser(B). The gas exits through vents in the side of the suitcase (C).
Jet pumps are readily available, as a fluid is passed through the pump a suction force is generated which can be used to draw another fluid into the pumps flow.
In this design they are positioned so that they may draw ambient air into the exhaust tiow through holes in the suitcase base.
Additional methods could be added, to reduce the oxygen content of the exhausted gas, such as nitrogen blankets and nitrogen gas stored and released when necessary.
Exhaust System Operation.
1. Gas exiting the suitcase (during normal venting or because of cylinder failure) takes the easiest route down through the exhaust system receivers. See figures 6 and 7 part (A).
2. Flame arresting gauze removes any flame that may be present as the gas passes through the exhaust system. See figure 6 and 7 part (D).
3. As the gas passes through the jet pumps, ambient air is drawn in, diluting the gas oxygen purity to a safe level. See figure 6 (B) and figure 7 (B).
4. The gas exits the diffuser (flg6 E) and its pressure reduces as it does so.
5. The diluted and dc-pressurized gas exits the suitcase through thevei,ts (Fig2 (C).
Page 5 Portable Breathing Oxygen Replenishment case with exhaust system.
Normal Operation whole assembly.
1.The portable oxygen cylinder to be filled is placed in the open fill cage and secured by the straps.
2. Any remaining gas in the portable oxygen cylinder is analyzed to check purity.
3. The fill pipe is purged and connected to the portable oxygen cylinder.
4. The fill cage is closed and secured, the suitcase is closed and secured.
5. The operator performs the fill procedure (operator to be trained and authorized to use the device).
6. Excess okygen is vented from the fill line vent valve out through the vent chamber.
Oxygen purity is diluted to below 40% by mixing with ambient air through exhaust system, 7. The suitcase is opened, the cage is opened and the portable oxygen cylinder is removed.
