Abstract

In a multicast system, a source (101) sends a multicast packet to a cluster of recipients (A-C). The source then receives information indicating receiving status of the multicast packet (e.g. ACK/NAK) from each individual member of the cluster. The source collects the status information and sends it to each member of the cluster, e.g. as a table or matrix (fig. 1B, not shown). On receipt of this information, intra-cluster retransmission of missed packets takes place with each cluster member determining whether to request retransmission of a missed packet from another cluster member, or to retransmit a packet to a cluster member which reeports that it missed the packet. Determination can be made based on link strengths, transmission priorities, allocated transmission resources, power capabilites of cluster members etc.

After receiving ACtVNACK r'nessages for the retransmissions from the reciients, the eNS checks in phase 310, whether all onginaily transmnfted packets have been positNeiy' acknowledged. if aH packets have been positivehj acknowledged. eNS continues to send more muiticast packets. That is, the procedure returns to send Cdi 30$ forte next group of maulticast ackets. if some of the packets have been neativei acknoidedged. the process returns to phase 305 and ntraciuster retransmission, initiated in this example the messages. 301, 302 and 306 are broadcasted to the recipients.

Figure; 4 shows a procedure example according to some emnniodirnents. The exampie s a variant of the example shown in Figure 3.Now retransmission i5 triggered only when the totai number of receIved blACks (or the number of blACked packets) is exceeds a threshold.
