Abstract

A furniture jack for lifting a piece of furniture 2 off the floor, comprising body 9 attached to axle 8 with wheels 3 that allow axle 8 to move on the floor during lifting, the body 9 having at least one jacking member 6, 7 parallel to the axis of axle 8. Jacking member 6, 7 can be moved along body 9 to set the lifting height for the furniture, and body 9 has a stabiliser 4 that is set at an angle of less than 90° to the body 9 so that the body 9 passes through a vertical position when the furniture 2 is lifted and the stabiliser 4 engages the ground. An extension rod 10 may be used to extend the length of body 9, and the jack may be folded for transit or storage. Two jacks maybe linked together by two bars so that one jack mimics the operation of the other.

Description

A FURNITURj JACK
DESCRIPTION
The use of furniture raisers to raise the operating height of furniture is well known. When furniture raisers are to be fitted to large and often heavy pieces of furniture it is often difficult to fit such furniture raisers due to the difficulty in lifting the furniture onto the furniture raiser. The present invention provides a means for one person to raise a heavy piece of furniture, one side or one corner at a time in order to attach or put in place furniture raisers under said furniture. In order that the invention may be better understood reference will be made to the following drawings where: -Fig # I shows three projection views and a perspective view of the invention placed under a piece of furniture ready to make a lift.
Fig #2 shows three projection views and a perspective view of the invention with the furniture at the required elevated height and the invention in its stable top of lift position.
Fig # 3 shows a three projection views and a perspective view of the invention shut down for transport.
Now referring to the figures: -The invention comprises a pair of wheels or skids (3) to allow it to move on the floor during positioning and during operation. Two jacking members (6) (7) are provided such that the invention can be used with the lifting handle (5) facing in either of two directions. The lift height of the jacking members (6) (7) can be adjusted by removing them from a body (9) and placing them in another lift height adjustment hole (12). Regardless of the lift height setting the start height is always substantially the same. The lifting handle (5) is attached to a body extension (10).
The body extension (10) is prevented from sliding within the body (9) by a body extension locking button that is spring loaded. The body extension (10) can be locked in any desired position by adding holes for the body extension locking button (11) to spring through. The wheels and skids (3) are attached to an axle (8) which is attached to the body (9).
A stabiliser member (4) is attached to the body (9) by means of a stabiliser member hinge pins (14) and a stabiliser member locking button (13). The stabiliser member is arranged such that it can be folded for transport as shown in Fig #3.
The invention is operated by placing a jacking member (6) or (7) under the underside (1) of a furniture (2), having first set the jacking members (6) (7) to lift to the required height. This condition is shown in Fig # 1. The lifting handle is then moved substantially in a vertical direction until it goes to a position about 10 degrees over vertical as shown in Fig # 2. During this operation the wheels or skids (3) move on the floor in a direction towards the jacking members (6) (7) and finally past the jacking members.
The furniture (2) and the jacking members (6) (7) move substantially vertically upwards. In the lifted position the invention is stable and will not fall back to the low position because the jacking members (6) (7) have passed vertically over the centre line of the wheels (3) as shown in fig # 2.
In other embodiments of the invention the mechanical parts of the invention can take on any other form.
A single furniture jack can be employed to raise a corner or side of a piece of furniture.
In another embodiment of the invention two such furniture jacks can be linked together by two pivoted connection members such that one furniture jack copies the movement of the other one. This device can raise the long side of a bed for example using the two jacking members, one on each furniture jack.
Accordingly the present invention comprises a furniture jack suitable for jacking a side or corner of a piece of furniture vertically off the floor and comprising a body (9) attached to an axle (8), said axle (8) having floor engaging wheels or skids (3) that allow the axle to move on the floor during the lift, said body having at least one jacking member (6) projecting in the same axis as the axle (6) and said jacking member (6) being moveable on said body such that the lifting height of the future can be set to the required height, and said body (9) having a stabiliser member (4) projecting almost vertically upwards from the axle (6) end of said body (9) when the furniture jack is in its lowest position and said stabiliser member (4) beingarranged such that when the body (9) is raised it will pass above its vertical position before the stabiliser member (4) engages the ground to establish a stable and raised condition.

Claims (6)

  1. CLAIMS1) A furniture jack suitable for jacking a side or corner of a piece of furniture vertically off the floor and comprising a body (9) attached to an axle (8), said axle (8) having floor engaging wheels or skids (3) that allow the axle to move on the floor during the lift, said body having at least one jacking member (6) projecting in the same axis as the axle (6) and said jacking member (6) being moveable on said body such that the lifting height of the furniture can be set to the required height, and said body (9) having a stabiliser member (4) projecting almost vertically upwards from the axle (6) end of said body (9) when the furniture jack is in its lowest position and said stabiliser member (4) being arranged such that when the body (9) is raised ii will pass above its vertical position before the stabiliser member (4) engages the ground to establish a stable and raised condition.
  2. 2) A furniture jack as claimed in claim # I where a body extension (10) is added to the body (9) in order to extend the length of the body (9).
  3. 3) A furniture jack as claimed in claims # 1 & 2 where the construction is arranged to fold to reduce the volume of the furniture jack for transit.
  4. 4) A furniture jack as claimed in claims 1-3 where the furniture jack is construed in a different manner and to perform the same function.
  5. 5) A furniture jack as claimed in claims 1-3 where a furniture jack generally as herein described.
  6. 6) A furniture jack as claimed in claims 1-5 where a furniture jack used in conjunction with a second furniture jack generally as herein described, the two furniture jacks being linked by two bars such that one furniture jack mimics the operation of the other furniture jack and said combination being arranged such that two jacking points on the furniture can be lifted substantially simultaneously by operating the body of any one of the two linked furniture jacks.Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows:CLAIMS1) A furniture jack suitable for jacking a side or corner of a piece of furniture vertically off the floor and comprising a body (9) attached to an axle (8), said axle (8) having floor engaging wheels or skids (3) that allow the axle to move on the floor during the lift, said body having at least one jacking member (6) projecting in an axis parallel to the floor engaging wheels axle and said jacking member (6) being moveable on said body such that the lifting height of the furniture can be set to the required height and said jacking member (6) being arranged to protrude from the side of said body (9) such that the furniture that is to be lifted can be positioned to the side of said body (9), and said body also acting as the operating lever for lifting said furniture and said body (9) having a stabiliser member (4) projecting almost vertically upwards from the axle (6) end of said body (9) when the furniture jack is in its lowest position and said stabiliser member (4) being arranged such that when * the body (9) is raised it will pass above its vertical position before the stabiliser member (4) engages the ground to establish a stable and raised condition. * S S...2) A furniture jack as claimed in claim # I where a body extension (10) is added to the body (9) in order to extend the length of the body (9).3) A furniture jack as claimed in claims # 1 & 2 where the construction is arranged to fold to reduce the volume of the furniture jack for transit.
