Abstract

The device allows a user to prepare wires to wire a plug. The device ensures the wires a cut and stripped of their insulating cover by the correct amounts so that the wires fit perfectly in the plug. The device is made up of a hinged body with cutting blades which acts, when wires are placed into the body, to hold and cut the wires to the required length, and which strips the wires when a user pulls the wires out of the body.

Description

CABLE SURGEON
DESCRIPTION
A cable preparation device that prepares the cable prior to fitting into a plug.
Over the years I have changed many plugs and on many occasions I have been appalled by the condition of the existing wiring. It's very often of a poor standard and more importantly unsafe.
It is obvious that there is a requirement for a device that could prepare the wires prior to fitting into the plug.
Many people do not know that if the cable is somehow pulled from the plug whilst connected to the mains, the earth wire should be connected so it is the last wire to be pulled from the plug. It's not uncommon for users to cut all three wires the same length and bunch the wires up inside the plug, which is an unsafe method. To my knowledge there is not a wire stripper that assists the user in preparing the individual wires to the correct length.
The purpose of the cable surgeon is to enable the average person to prepare an electrical cable in a manner that ensures that when it's fitted in the plug correctly its fitted in the safest way and as its intended to be fitted.
The main concept behind the device is that the user would place the Live, Neutral and Earth wires into the cable surgeon, which would each lay over two blades. (Figure two). The nearer blade would be a V shape, which would cut the outer sheath, and the next blade would be a sharp wire cutting type blade. All three blades would be staggered to cut the wires to the correct lengths so they can be inserted in the plug correctly. The device is designed for the user to place the wires in whilst it is in the open position and once inserted the case would be closed to lock in the wires. The user would then firstly apply a downward pressure, which would cut the wires and then apply a pulling motion, (Figure 3) which would strip the wires and once removed would be of an ideal length for inserting into a plug.
The design could be made available in various shapes and range from compact designs for the toolbox and larger models for the home and for customers where they require greater leverage.
The device will also include a larger wire stripper, which will remove the outer wire. The user will be able to tell if the outer sheath requires cutting when the wires are placed in the cable surgeon. A non-slip base will be provided to enable the user to place it onto a table and apply downward pressure, which will enable the wires to be cut.
To further assist the user a colour chart would be visible to assist them in placing the wires into the correct terminal. The size of the colour chart would depend on the size of the particular device. On the larger models it would be possible to include a insulated screwdriver, assortment of fuses and other electrical sundries.
The model chosen by the user would depend on how able the person was. The toolbox version would be very compact and would fit snugly into the palm. The pressure for cutting the wires would come from squeezing the device in the hand or with both hands. It would also be designed so it could be tapped with a hammer if required, as some wires are stronger than others. Larger models would be made so the design of the case would also act as a lever system to make the cutting easier. Ideal for people with weak hands and wrists. (2)
