Abstract

The container 10 comprises a first compartment 12 generally wedge shaped for holding sandwiches and a second compartment 14 that is generally part spherical (114, Fig.3) or part cylindrical (214, Fig.5) for holding other foods such as salad 17 or fruit 18. The construction is of blister type where the compartments are defined on one sheet and covered with a flat removable cover member (12, Fig.2). A bridging member (130, Fig.3, 230, Fig.5) between the two compartments may be present to aid stability.

Description

S
Title: Container for food stuffs DescriDtion of Invention This invention relates to a container for foodstuffs.
More particularly, this invention relates to a container for foodstuffs which are often referred to as "sandwiches" (e.g. having at least a first bread layer, a second bread layer and a filling therebetween). The filling(s) can take many forms. This invention also relates to foodstuffs such as fruits and salads and the like.
For the avoidance of doubt, the term "sandwich" used hereinafter should be considered to include like foodstuffs, such as, for example, baps, rolls, baguettes, sub-rolls, ciabattas, focaccias.
Fruits and/or salads are often chosen and purchased by a consumer as a supplement to a sandwich. It is known for a sandwich to be packaged and sold in a container manufactured from a plastics material, e.g. a vacuum formed package, which is often transparent (so that the consumer can readily see the contents of the package). It is known for fruits and salads to be packaged in similar in containers, again manufactured, conventionally, from a transparent plastics material. The fruit and salad is typically sold pre-processed, e.g. diced/sliced in to substantially bite-sized pieces and/or peeled.
A problem with the above is that the consumer has to purchase two containers at his/her meal time and must transport both containers to where he/she is intending to consume their purchased foodstuffs.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to address the above problem. * 2
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a container for foodstuffs, the container comprising a first receiving part to receive a sandwich or the like and a second receiving part to receive fruit and/or salad or the like.
Providing a container ion accordance with the present invention is advantageous because it ensures that a consumer does not have to purchase two or more containers at his/her meal time and transport both containers to where he/she is intending to consume their purchased foodstuffs. In addition, the invention results a substantial saving in the amount packaging materials necessary, thus resulting in a reduced manufacturing carbon footprint and reduced disposal costs etc. Further features of the first aspect of the invention are set out in claims 2 to 6 appended hereto.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a container comprising a first receiving part and a second receiving part, wherein the container supports a sandwich or the like in the first receiving part and fruit and/or salad or the like in the second receiving part.
Examples of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is a side view of the container in accordance with the present invention; S 3 Figure 3 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of a container in accordance with the present invention; Figure 4 is a side view of the container of figure 3; Figure 5 is a perspective view of a third embodiment of a container in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 6 is a side view of the container of figure 5; Referring to the figures, there is shown a container 10 in accordance with the present invention. The container 10 is manufactured, using a conventional vacuum forming process, from a transparent plastics material, which in this example is APET (Amorphous Poly Ethylene Terephthalate). Alternatively, for example, the container 10 could be made from RPET (Recycled Poly Ethylene Terephthalate) or polypropylene. The container 10 has a first receiving part 12 to receive a sandwich 16 and a second receiving part 14 to receive fruit and/or salad 17, 18 (shown as an example in figure 1 as lettuce 17 and grapes 18).
The first 12 and second 14 receiving parts in this example are positioned adjacent each other and communicate with each other. In other words, the first 12 and second 14 receiving parts together define a continuous cavity for receipt of foodstuffs. Of course, it may be desirable to separate the first 12 and second 14 receiving parts from each other. In that case, a blocking member (not shown) may be incorporated into the container to separate the first 12 and second 14 parts from each other.
The first receiving part 12 is part-wedge-shaped and is configured to receive four triangular parts of a sandwich 16. The four triangular parts are created by slicing a substantially square sandwich from two of its corners to their S 4 respective diagonally opposite corners. The sandwich parts are then positioned side-by-side in the first receiving part 12.
The second receiving part 14 is part-spherical and abuts the wedge-shaped first receiving part 12 at one of its sloping sides.
The container also includes a removable cover member 20 for enclosing the sandwich 16 and the fruit and/or salad 17, 18 in the first 12 and second 14 receiving parts.
Figures 3 and 4 show a second embodiment of a container 110 in accordance with the present invention. Features which correspond to those of the container 10 have been given the same reference numeral with the addition of 100.
The container 110 is very similar to the container 10 in that it has a wedge-shaped first receiving part 112 and a part-spherical second receiving part 114.
The container 110 differs only in that distal portions of the first 112 and second 114 receiving parts which are spaced from the cover 120 are connected to each other by a bridging member 130. The bridging member 130 provides for additional stability when the container 110 is positioned on a surface.
Figures 5 and 6 show a third embodiment of a container 210 in accordance with the present invention. Features which correspond to those of the containers 10 have been given the same reference numeral with the addition of 200.
The container 210 is similar to the container 10 in that it has a wedge-shaped first receiving part 112. However, the second receiving part 214 of the container 210 is semi-cylindrical. The container 210 also has a bridging * 5 member 230 similar, in form and function, to the bridging member 130, for additional stability when the container 210 is positioned on a surface.
When used in this specification and claims, the terms "comprises" and "comprising" and variations thereof mean that the specified features, steps or integers are included. The terms are not to be interpreted to exclude the presence of other features, steps or components.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may, separately, or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof. * 6
