Abstract

An asthma inhaler, includes protective outer shield 8 with flexible gasket 9 which can be displaced when in contact with the flexible mouthpiece 7. With flexible upper cap 1, a removable upper body 2 including air intake apertures 3 and air filter 4 which can be removed to allow the insertion of a metered dose canister 6. A flexible mouthpiece 7 which retains its shape when compressed and released through the rotation of the protective outer shield 8 and an atomiser 11 which when the canister is actuated disperses the medication so that it exits the mouthpiece 7 and can be inhaled directly into the lungs of the user.

Description

Page 1 Inhaler for treatment of Asthma
Background
This invention relates to an improved metered dose inhaler for the treatment of Asthma.
At present the metered dose inhaler is the most widely used device for the treatment and management of Asthma. However the current device, which consists of 2 major parts, has many disadvantages. These are the loss of the protective cap and the major issue of particle and dust ingress into the device. As the device is continually carried on ones person the loss of mouthpiece cap is easy and thus when using the inhaler one can inhale particles directly into the lungs. The last issue relates to the inhalation of polluted air with the medication when using the device.
Statement of invention
To overcome the issues listed above the invention proposes the following: 1.To use a flexible mouthpiece (as part of a 4 part assembly).
2. An external shield which (with flexible gasket) is allowed to rotate around the main body and in doing so compresses the flexible mouthpiece and completely covers both this and the air intake apertures above.
3. An air filtration part which removes pollutants when the device is being used.
4.A fixed cap to actuate the pressurised metered dose canester.
When closed the unit is completely sealed and does not allow the ingress of foreign particles.
The shield is rotated through 180 degrees around the main body to either completely expose or then cover and enclose the mouthpiece and air make apertures. Where the shield meets the main body of the assembly a flexible gasket has been used to seal the mouthpiece and air intake from any foreign bodies. The top section of the device, which includes the actuating cap, can be removed to allow cleaning and the replacement of the canester when required.
Advantages 1.The use of a flexible mouthpiece will provide more comfort in mouth for users.
2. As it is flexible it can be compressed into a smaller area which allows the overall form of the device to be more compact than current metered dose inhalers.
3.The flexible mouthpiece also has some elastic memory which allows It to retain its original form as soon as it is exposed.
Page 2 Advantages continued: 4.The protective shield provides 4 major improvements.
a) it is part of the assembly which means it cannot be removed or lost b) it provides complete enclosure of the mouthpiece which means it is protected and sealed against foreign bodies. This is by way of rotation around the main assembly and through the use of a flexible gasket which is in contact with the body at all times.
c) it acts to move and compress the mouthpiece when rotated by the user.
d) it covers and encloses the ar intake apertures against all foreign particles. Once rotated it exposes these apertures and allows the user to inhale the medication by drawing air through the apertures (with the medication) and into the lungs.
5.The upper body which includes the air intake apertures and the actuating cap can be removed to allow access to the canester.lt is located onto the lower section of the assembly by using a male to female locking mechanism. This holds the upper body in place and does not allow it to rotate when the user wishes to expose the mouthpiece by rotating the outer shield.
6.As the device uses a filtration system behind the air intake apertures, users inhale less pollutants.
7. No parts require removal for day to day use which means a completely sealed unit with no requirement to touch the mouthpiece with ones hands when using the device.
8. By using an existing metered dose canester the user does not need to relearn the methodolgy of treating asthma as the device uses an identicle atomiser in the delivery of the medication (identicle to those used art existing metered dose inhalers).
Inroduction to drawings The invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows the parts used in the inventions assembly Figure 2 shows the flexible mouthpiece Figure 3 shows the protective shield, flexible gasket, atomiser and clip mechanism Figure 4 shows the fully assembled device in its open state Figure 5 shows the fully assembled device in its closed state Page 3 Inhaler for treatment of Asthma
Detailed description:
Figure 1 shows an over view of the assembly. A cap fixes to the upper body. The upper body locates onto the lower inner body within which resides a removeable metered dose pressurised canester. Onto the lower body is fixed a flexible mouthpiece. When attached the mouth piece has an aperture which matches an idential opening on the tower body. A shield is located onto the lower body also. It is fixed into position so that the canester locates with the atomiser which is part of the shield. Running around the inside perimeter of the shield is a flexible gasket. When the assembly comes together the shield is fixed into position onto the lower body but is allowed to rotate freely. The upper body, including fixed cap is removable to allow access to the canester.
The fixed cap (1) is atached to the upper body (2).The cap is flexible and allows the actuation of the metered dose canester. The upper body (2) has several open apertures (3).These apertures allow air to travel Inside the device when medication Is inhaled through the mouthpiece. There is a a filtration section (4) loacted behind the apertures (3).This allows air to be drawn in through the apertures from outise the unit whilst being cleansed of foreign particles and pollutants before mixing with the medication.
The lower body (5) is attached to the upper body (2) by way of an interlocking male to female mechanism. The upper body (2) can be removed to access the canester (6).The tower body (5) has an open area for inhalation of the medication when the canester is actuated. Adhered to the lower body (5) is the flexible mouthpiece (7).This is bonded in place so that it retains its location when compressed. Its is made from a flexible plastic with enough elasticity to deform and return to its original form over long periods of use.
The shield (8) has a flexible gasket (9) .This flexible gasket meets the upper body (2) and mouthpiece (7) when snap fitted in place with retainers (1 O).The retainers (10) as part of the outer shield (8) fit into a return in the lower body (5). As part of the outer shield (8) is a standard atomiser (11) as found within all metered dose inhaters. This acts to disperse the medication within the canester (5) when actuated. When the outer shield (8)is rotated through 180 degrees it exposes the air intake apertures (3). When the medication is inhaled through the mouthpiece (7) air is drawn in through the device and out through the mouthpiece (7).There is an air gap between the upper body (2) and the canester (5) to allow the movement of air through the filter, down through the unit and out though the mouthpiece.
