Abstract

A pillow lifting device comprises an elevating frame 1 and a base frame 2 arranged such that a gap exists between the two frames when the device is folded flat. The elevating frame 1 can be wider or narrower than the base frame 2, or it can be laterally offset relative to the base frame. The elevating frame 1 can be power operated via an actuator 5 and cam mechanism 9 that provides lift to the elevating frame when the elevating frame is in its lower positions. The gap 14 between the frames prevents limbs or body parts becoming trapped.

Description

PILLOW LIFTING DEVICE
The use of pillow lifting or elevating devices is well known. Such devices are normally placed on top of the mattress and on top of the bottom sheet and under the pillow of a bed. Such devices are normally designed to raise only one pillow. In a double bed situation it is normal to use two pillow lifting devices if both pillows are to be raised Devices available are manually operated or in some cases electrically operated.
The present invention is an improvement on existing products in its ability to lower the elevating frame to an almost horizontal position and to raise it electrically and also in its frame design in that there is no need to guard the sides of the frames against entrapment.
In order that the invention may be better understood reference will now be made to the accompanying figures where: -Fig #1 shows a plan view of the device in its lowest position.
Fig #2 shows a three dimensional view of the device and in its lowest position.
Fig #3 shows a three dimensional view of the device and with the elevating frame raised to a small angle.
Fig #4 shows a three dimensional view of the device and with the elevating frame raised to a higher angle.
The device consists of an elevating frame (1) that is attached to a base frame (2) by means of two frame pivots (3) (4) For the sake of clarity in all the figures the elevating frame (1) is shown without its upper surface that supports the pillow. There may be a soft covenng to this upper surface that supports the pillow. Further the base frame (2) is shown without any attachment means that may be added to assist in keeping the device on station.
The elevating frame (1) is elevated by the extension of an actuator (5). The actuator (5) is pivoted at an actuator fixed pivot (6) that is attached to the base frame (2) The other end of the actuator is attached to a cam (9) at an actuator cam pivot (7). The cain is attached to the elevating frame (1) at a cam pivot (8). The cain has a cam roller (10) that reacts with a cam support surface (11).
When the elevating frame (1) is in its lower positions the cam roller (10) is in contact with the cam support surface (11) causing the cam (9) to provide a lifting action for the elevating frame (1). The cam action is necessary as when the elevating frame (1) is in its lower positions the actuator can provide little or no lifting force directly to the elevating frame (1). The actuator pushes on the actuator cam pivot (7) causing the cam (9) to rotate on the cam pivot (8).
When the elevating frame (1) reaches a pre selected angle a stop (not shown) causes the cam to stop rotating. When the cam (9) is reacting with the stop the actuator continues to lift the elevating frame (1) in a conventional manner.
The ultimate angle reached by the elevating frame (1) is detennmed by the stroke of the actuator (5).
The described mechanism allows the actuator to raise the elevating frame (1) from an angle close to horizontal via the cam (9) and then when a suitable inclination angle of the elevating frame (1) is reached the cam (9) is stopped from rotating and the cam (9) acts in a conventional manner.
The base frame (2) sides are made with width that is less than that of the elevating frame (1). This creates a gap (12) and (13) between the two frames when the elevating frame (1) is in its lower positions. This gap (12), (13) is of dimensions that it presents no danger of limb entrapment when the elevating frame (1) is lowered. When the elevating frame (1) is in its lowest position it is not parallel to the base frame (2) because the elevating part of the elevating frame (I) is made to stop at a position that keeps a gap (14) between the two frames. The gap (14) is of such dimensions that it presents no danger of limb entrapment when the elevating frame (1) is lowered In another embodiment of the invention the cam roller (10) may be omitted allowing the cam (9)to slide directly on the cam support surface (ii). Further, two or more cam rollers may be provided in order to form a cam with more lift at the start of its action such that the device can lift a heavier load.
In a further embodiment of the invention the two or more rollers may be removed and the cam shaped to provide a similar effect of graded mechanical advantage.
The electrically operated actuator (5) may be replaced by any other device operated by any other means.
In further embodiments of the invention the cam mechanism may be modified such that the actuator cam pivot point (7) is removed from the elevating frame (1) and attached to the base frame (2).
Further the actuator (7) and cam mechanism may be moved to one side of the product or to the side of the product most remote from the frame pivots (3), (4) or to any other position.
A further embodiment of the invention can be constructed by making the elevating frame (1) narrower than the base frame (2), or by making the elevating frame (1) and the base frame (2) of similar widths and offsetting them.
Accordingly the present invention comprises a pillow lifter comprising a base frame and an elevating frame that are pivotally connected, the profile of the sides of the elevating frame being arranged such that they form a frame that is wider than the base frame, such that when the elevating frame is lowered to its lowest position it does not form an entrapment danger for limbs or body parts.

Claims (4)

CLAIMS 1) A pillow lifter comprising a base frame and an elevating frame that are pivotally connected, the profile of the sides of the elevating frame being arranged such that they form a frame that is wider than the base frame, such that when the elevating frame is lowered to its lowest position it does not form an entrapment danger for limbs or body parts. 2) A claim as claimed in claim I where the elevating frame is made narrower than the base frame. 3) A claim as claimed in claim I where the elevating frame and the base frame are of substantially the same width and they are offset such that the base frame protrudes beyond the elevating frame on one side and the elevating frame protrudes beyond the base frame on the other side. 1) A pillow lifter comprising a base frame and an elevating frame that are pivotally connected, the profile of the sides of the elevating frame being arranged such that they are offset to those of the base frame, such that when the elevating frame is lowered to its lowest position the two frame members do not create a scissor action and therefore do not form an entrapment danger for limbs or body parts, said device also being arranged such that the elevating frame is elevated by a cam and actuator, the actuator having one end pivotally connected to the base frame at a point offset from the pivotal connection between the base frame and the elevating frame, and a second end coupled to the cam which is pivotally mounted to the free end of the elevating frame, wherein in use the actuator causes the cam to react with a cam support surface that is attached to said base thereby causing elevation of the elevating frame.
