Abstract
The states of neurons are monitored by measuring the electrical admittance in the region of the neurons. The results may be displayed as an EEG-type display or used in a control system.
Description
A Method oMonitcng Neural State 2442046 A Method of Mon itorin Neural
States In this invention the state of neurones is monitored by a method other than by monitoring the voltage or magnetic output(s) of neurone(s).
At present the state of neurones is monitored by monitoring the voltages produced by the said neurones or magnetic fields relating to resonance.
In this invention the status of a neurone or group of neurones is monitored by monitoring its electrical Admittance or a suitable component thereof. The operator is supplied with any necessary connection(s), probe(s), contact(s) or inductive loop(s) required for monitoring electrical parameter(s).
If necessary the changes in the monitored factor may then be subject to whatever conditioning! pattern recognition is required to produce a defined output corresponding to what has been monitored.
In one implementation the admittance is monitored between two electrodes in contact with the scalp by using the admittance to provide the timing element of a charging circuit, the maximum voltage being sufficiently low to be safe. By arranging that the charging is carried out in the opposite direction after the voltage betveen the electrodes reaches a pre-defined figure, and by arranging that the charging reverts to its original direction after another pre-defined inter-electrode voltage is reached, a frequency of oscillation can be produced which is in some way proportional to the admittance being monitored.
The frequency/phase may then be converted for use in EEG, brain control, entertainment or similar applications.
Claims (3)
- A Method of Monitoring Neural St4ç Claims 1) A system whereby thestates of neurones are monitored by monitoring the Admittance or a component thereof in the vicinity of the said neurones.
- 2) A system as in 1) above where the factor monitored is used as the basis for further monitoring as in an EEG-type presentation.
- 3) A system as in I) above where the factor monitored is used as the basis of a control system.
