Abstract

A three-dimensional slow release agent absorbent dressing (1) suitable for use in sinus cavity or infective wounds comprises a wound-contacting layer (2) surrounding the outside of the dressing (1). The wound-contacting layer (2) is a soft-film covered with tapered apertures (5) and the larger caliber area of the tapered apertures (5) faces outwardly to contact a wound for discharging exudate from the wound in many directions and transmitting exudate via a diffusion guiding layer (3) to absorbent elements (4). The absorbent elements (4) formed of high-molecular polymeric fibers, are mixed with a certain concentration of water-soluble agents (6), such as an antiseptic agent, enzymes, a growth factor agent or any combination thereof, in a suitable amount. After exudate has been absorbed by the absorbent elements (4), the polymeric fibers expand and form into a gel to prevent exudate flowing back to the wound and the water soluble agent dissolves and flows to the wound. The dressing is effective in protecting the wound from secondary infection.

Description

<p>THREE-DIMENSIONAL SLOW RELEASE AGENT ABSORBENT</p>

<p>DRESSING</p>

<p>DESCRITION</p>

<p>The present invention relates to a three-dimensional slow release agent absorbent dressing more suitable for use in sinus cavity or infective wounds.</p>

<p>An outside first layer of said dressing is a wound-contacting layer formed of a porous soft-film with tapered apertures, which have a function of absorbing exudate from a wound quickly to avoid exudate flowing backward to the wound. Moreover, a certain concentration of water-soluble agents, such as antiseptic agents, enzymes and growth factor agents, in a suitable amount is able to be mixed into dry absorbent articles of the dressing of the present invention, which is more effective in infection control, debridement and healing.</p>

<p>Almost every healing process generally adopted in medical institution are using antimicrobial dressings to cover or bandage wounds, such as laceration, surgical incision, inflammation or burns in order to prevent them from being infected by external bacteria.</p>

<p>However, the structure of dressings commonly used is a flat form, and they are only fit to be applied on surface wounds. But some wounds are deep and the depth of wounds can be as much as five centimeters. If people use force to insert these common dressings into such deep wounds, wounds might become more serious. In that case, it is definitely not convenient to use general dressings to heal deep wounds like sinus cavity wounds.</p>

<p>The main object of the present invention is to provide a three-dimensional slow release agent absorbent dressing more suitable for use in sinus cavity or infective wounds; another object of the present invention is to provide a certain concentration of water-soluble agents mixed into dry absorbent articles. Said certain concentration is considered by the saturation capacity of said absorbent articles. After absorbent articles absorbs discharged exudate being in a saturated state, the certain concentration of dissolved agents will release and flow backward to the wound, which achieves the --ia static, lysis of necrotic tissue and even promoting granulation growth.</p>

<p>In order that the invention might be more fully understood, a preferred embodiment in accordance therewith will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of the present embodiment of the three-dimensional slow release agent absorbent dressing; and Figure 2 is a perspective view of the present embodiment of the three-dimensional slow release agent absorbent dressing.</p>

<p>Referring to Figure 1 and Figure 2, A three-dimensional slow release agent absorbent dressing 1 of the present invention comprises a wound-contacting layer 2, an inner diffusion guiding layer 3 and a core layer of absorbent elements 4. The placement of these layers is one on top of another and the peripheral edges are joined together by heat-sealing.</p>

<p>The wound-contacting layer 2, as an outer first layer of the dressing 1, comprises a porous soft-film covered with tapered apertures 5. The film can be a non-adherent polyethylene film and the tapered apertures 5 can be polygonal tapered or conical shaped apertures. The larger caliber areas of the tapered apertures 5 contact a wound to produce a one-way valve, to discharge exudate from the wound by penetration through the numerous tapered apertures 5 in many directions. The so-discharged exudate is transmitted via the diffusion guiding layer 3 to the absorbent elements 4 which form into a gel to prevent backf low of exudate. The absorbent elements 4 are high-molecule absorbent materials, such as polyester or algin, mixed with a certain concentration of water-soluble agents 6 which can be antiseptic agents, enzymes and/or growth factor agents in a suitable amount added to dry absorbent elements 4. The certain concentration is determined by the saturation capacity of the absorbent elements 4.</p>

<p>After the absorbent elements 4 have absorbed discharged exudate to become in a saturated state, the certain concentration of dissolved agents 6 will flow back to the wound, which is more suitable for use in sinus cavity or infective wounds to achieve the effect of infection control.</p>

<p>Therefore, as the absorbent elements 4 are mixed with antiseptic agents, the dressing 1 has the function of being bacteria static. As the absorbent articles 4 are mixed with enzymes, the dressing 1 has the function of lysis of necrotic tissue and debridment. As the absorbent elements 4 are mixed with growth factor agents, the dressing 1 has the function of promoting granulation growth. For example, the concentration of a l silver nitrate (AgNO3) solution is able to produce bacteria static properties. it assumes that the greatest amount of absorption capacity of 5gm absorbent elements 4 in the dressing 1 is 50cc. In the present embodiment, a 0.5gm silver nitrate solution is well mixed into 5gm absorbent elements 4. After the absorbent elements 4 absorb exudate to a saturated state, 1 silver nitrate solution will be released, thereby flowing through the tapered apertures 5 of the wound-contacting layer 2 of the dressing 1 to the wound and acting on the wound.</p>

<p>The wound-contacting layer 2 is formed of a soft film covered with tapered apertures 5. Besides having the advantage of producing a one-way valve for discharging exudate from the wound, it does not adhere to the wound. For this reason, the dressing 1 is removed easily without hurting newborn epidermis.</p>

<p>As shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2, the diffusion guiding layer 3 joined to the inner surface of the wound-contacting layer 2, can be directional fine-hole fibers or non-woven fabrics to transmit discharged exudate to the absorbent elements 4 which are attached to the interior of the diffusion guiding layer 3 and which are high-molecule absorbent materials, such as polyester or algin.</p>

<p>After absorbing exudate discharged from the wound, the high-molecule polymeric fibers expand to form into a gel to prevent exudate flowing back to the wound. The absorbent elements have added to them a certain concentration of the agents 6 in a suitable amount to absorb discharged exudate. The agents 6 can be antiseptic agents, enzymes and/or growth factor agents. After the elements 4 have come to a saturated state, the certain concentration of dissolved agents 6 will flow back to the wound. In the present embodiment, antiseptically treated, non-woven pulp and high-molecule polymeric fibers 4 are used.</p>

<p>The embodiment of absorbent dressing 1 described above with reference to the drawing is pad-or cushion-shaped. However, it is to be appreciated that it can be shaped otherwise, depending upon its particular wound application.</p>

Claims (1)

  1. <p>CLAIMS</p>
    <p>1. A three-dimensional slow release agent absorbent dressing comprising; a wound-contacting layer which is a first layer of the dressing and is formed of a soft-film with tapered apertures; a diffusion guiding layer attached to the wound-contacting layer and formed of directional fine-hole fibers or non-woven fabrics; and absorbent elements attached to the diffusion guiding layer and formed of a high-molecule absorbent material capable of absorbing exudate discharged from a wound to which the dressing is applied in use, wherein the diffusion guiding layer is arranged to disperse exudate from the wound-contacting layer to the absorbent elements in a substantially uniform manner, to increase the absorbency of the absorbent elements, thereby preventing exudate captured by the absorbent articles from passing back to the wound.</p>
    <p>2. A three-dimensional slow release agent absorbent dressing comprising: a wound-contacting layer which is a first layer of the dressing and is formed of a porous soft-film with tapered apertures; a diffusion guiding layer attached to the wound-contacting layer and formed of directional fine-hole fibers or non-woven fabrics; and absorbent elements attached to the diffusion guiding layer and comprising high-molecule absorbent elements mixed with a certain concentration of water-soluble agent, the absorbent elements being capable of absorbing exudate discharged from a wound in which the dressing is applied in use, wherein the diffusion guiding layer is arranged to disperse exudate from the wound-contacting layer to the absorbent elements in a substantially uniform manner, to increase the absorbency of the absorbent elements, thereby preventing exudate captured by the absorbent elements from passing back to the wound.</p>
    <p>3. A three-dimensional slow release agent absorbent dressing as claimed in claim 2, wherein the certain concentration of water-soluble agent comprises an antiseptic agent, enzymes, a growth factor agent or any combination thereof, and the certain concentration thereof mixed with the absorbent elements is in an amount based upon the saturation capacity of the absorbent elements, whereby, once the absorbent elements in a saturated state absorb exudate, said certain concentration of water-soluble agent dissolves and flows to the wound, thereby promoting infection control, debridement and healing thereof.</p>
    <p>4. A three-dimensional slow release agent absorbent dressing as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the dressing is pad-or cushion-shaped.</p>
    <p>5. A three-dimensional slow release agent absorbent dressing substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.</p>
