Abstract

A food container protects food therein from deterioration caused by exposure to air and/or light. It is made of non-transparent material and equipped with a non-return valve providing for expelling air therefrom. Expulsion of air may be by squeezing the container or by using a vacuum pump incorporated in the container (as shown) or by means of a domestic vacuum cleaner co-operating with an adapter provided on the container. Such a vacuum pump may be battery operated. The container may incorporate insulating material. The container may be a bag of flexible, food quality material or it may be a can with a lid incorporating the non-return valve.

<p>DISCRIPTION OF INVENTION</p>

<p>IMPROMENTS IN OR RELATING TO FOOD PRESERVATION AND</p>

<p>HYEGIENE CONTAINERS</p>

<p>The present invention seeks to improve food preservation to eliminate and or reduce food wastage in domestic commercial and industrial premises and eliminate and or reduce the risk of food associated illness.</p>

<p>It is a well known fact that food deteriorates when exposed to light and or oxygen and this gives rise to wastage of food and or the risk to health. Present day food containers have certain limitation the present invention seeks to overcome and or improve upon.</p>

<p>According to the present invention there is provided a food container manufactured with a soft flexible food quality suitable material with an airtight seal and non return airtight valve Advantageously the food container further incorporates a vacuum pump Conveniently the food container is manufactured in a non transparent colour Preferably the food container is manufactured with a non insolating material to help absorb cold from a refrigerator and or freezer Advantageously the food container is manufactured with insolating food quality material to help keep food fresher for a longer period outsize of a refrigerator Conveniently the food containers according to the present invention can be stored flat and therefore more conveniently in a smaller space.</p>

<p>In another embodiment is provided a food can lid with a vacuum pump and a soft food quality shroud material and a jubilee type clip or similar clip that may be tightened air tight round the food can, and then air will be pumped out to help preserve the food fresher for longer. This type of can lid seal will also help keep light and or dirt out of the food therefore keeping it in a more hygiene condition. It can be appreciated that this arrangement may and or will not be able to extract all the air and or oxygen from the can.</p>

<p>Once the food to be kept is placed in a container according to the present invention it will then be sealed with the airtight seal and the container will be pressed to the shape of the food within the container therefore expelling the air out through the non return airtight valve, on food containers equipped with the vacuum pump any remaining air may or will be pumped out thus helping to preserve food within the container even further Conveniently there is provided a removable adaptor to fit over the non return valve and a vacuum cleaner standard size hose Advantageously a removable battery operated vacuum pump may be fitted to a vacuum food container that can be removed and used with all other food containers in the range.</p>

<p>in order that the present invention is more readily understood and so that further features thereof may be appreciated it will now be explained by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a scematic representation of the non return vavie in which 1 is the valve in an open position 2 is the valve in a closed position 3 is the rubberised washer that opens and closes to allow airflow in one direction only.</p>

<p>Figure 2 is a scematic representation of the non return valve and a vacuum pump combined showing all the parts that make the combined non return valve vacuum pump unit in which 2 is the non return valve in the closed position 4 is the metal washer, 5 are the apertures on washer 4, 6 is the rubberised sealing washer that is supported by washer 4, and covers all the apertures on washer 4, 7 is the vacuum pump handle 8 is a washer supporting the sealing washer 6,9 is the vacuum pump non return valve in the closed position, 10 is the vacuum pump non return valve in the open position I E drawing air Figure 3 is a scematic diagram in which 11 is the food bag, 12 is the food bag lid in an open position 13 and 13 A is the airtight seal and 14 is the non return valve When food is placed in the food container/food bag the airtight seal is then closed n the air is expelled by pressing on the food bag/container all round the food contained the non return valve will allow air to be expelled out of the food container/food bag but will not allow air back into the container.</p>

<p>With food containers/food bags equipt with the vacuum pump after the majority of the air is expelled from the container and or food bag the vacuum pump is used to expel! any remaining air by pulling on the handle 7. Any remaining air may also be expelled using an adaptor and a domestic vacuum cleaner</p>

  1. <p>CLAIMS</p>
    <p>1 a food container and or bag comprising a housing manufactured with a suitable food quality flexible material in a non transparent colour with an airtight seal and or lid incorporating an airtight non return valve to expel air from the food container after the food is placed in the food and or bag container to help prolong the life of the food 2 a food container according to claim 1 wherein the airtight non return valve incorporates a vacuum pump to further expel any remaining air from the food container 3 a food container according to claim 1 and or claim 2 wherein the container incorporates an insulating material to further prolong the life of the food within the container 4 a food container according to claim 3 wherein the container incorporates a battery operated vacuum pump a lid and or cover that fits tight over an open can of food to seal the can n expel the air with a vacuum pump 6 a food container according to any of the preceding claims that incorporates a non return airtight valve a vacuum pump and or an adaptor to fit a household vacuum cleaner</p>
