Abstract

An optical device for providing the driver of a vehicle with a view of the road ahead has a forward-looking camera and a display screen mounted on the dashboard near the windscreen pillar on the front passenger's side of the vehicle. The device has particular use for the driver of a right-hand drive vehicle in right-hand traffic and vice versa, and would enable the driver to see more clearly around large vehicles which might obstruct the view ahead from the driver's seating position. The device may be wired permanently to the vehicle's electrical system or it may derive power via a plug inserted into the cigar lighter socket, allowing the device to be removed when not required.

Description

__ CLE VIEW

We are pleased to announce the introduction of a unique new product concept to the field of automotive safety. Called Clear View, the concept calls for the manufacture and distribution of a device that would serve as an aid to increase the driver's visual field. Clear View would be particularly relevant for use on right-hand drive vehicles being driven in a left-hand drive environment or vice versa.

To accomplish this, Clear View would consist of a small camera and corresponding screen fitted to the corner pillar on the passenger side of the vehicle, thus positioning the camera as close to the offside as possible. This positioning would also allow the driver to see the reflection in the side mirror to detect the presence of vehicles approaching from behind. The camera would be positioned such that it would be within the area of the windscreen covered by the windscreen v'iper and provide the driver with an unimpeded view of the road ahead at all times.

Clear View could either be fitted as a permanent fixture, wired directly into the vehicle's electrical system, or it could be designed as a detachable unit that could be inserted when needed, plugged into the vehicle's cigarette lighter port, and then removed when not required.

With this configuration, Clear View would enable the driver to see on-coming traffic in a more efficient manner when the position of the vehicle's steering wheel in relation to the traffic patterns would make such vision difficult, if not impossible. The primary purpose of Clear View is to provide a driver using a right-hand drive vehicle in a left-hand drive country or vice versa, with an aid that will increase the driver's visual field. In particular, this product would enable him or her to see more clearly around large vehicles or other objects that might block the driver's vsion.

For example, a car manufactured for the European or American market and then transported to the UK puts the driver on the kerb side of the vehicle where he or she cannot clearly see oncoming traffic. This situation would be reversed if a vehicle configured for UK traffic patterns were driven in the US or in other countries where traffic moves along the right side of the road.

Clear View delivers clear safety benefits to the vehicle owner and will have considerable appeal to a substantial market.
