Abstract

A laptop computer with modular keyboard has a keyboard (1) that can be removed from the main computer unit (2) with a simple release mechanism (6), and may then be used separately from the main unit, connected either by a cable (7) (e.g. USB) or using wireless communication (e.g. Bluetooth (RTM)). Any standard regional language or keyboard layout variant can be manufactured to operate in the same main laptop unit without any firmware or hardware modifications To further improve comfort and ease of use, the keyboard module has adjustable feet and optional add-ons for numeric keypad (3), wristpads (4), and trackball or touchpad (5).

Description

<p>1 2431900 Title: Laptop Computer and Keyboard</p>

<p>Background:</p>

<p>A conventional laptop/notebook computer has a fixed internal keyboard.</p>

<p>This design has a number of disadvantages:- * The user has to hunch over the computer to use the keyboard, causing strain to the neck, shoulders and wrists after a relatively short period of use.</p>

<p>* The laptop screen is too close to the user, causing excessive eye strain.</p>

<p>* In order for the computer keyboard to be at the right level to use, the display screen is well below eye level, causing bad posture, and neck and eye strain.</p>

<p>* If the internal keyboard is damaged or malfunctions, the whole unit must be scrapped or returned for repair, leaving the user without the use of their computer for some time.</p>

<p>In addition, the conventional laptop must be assembled with the internal keyboard for use in one region only, where that keyboard layout is the standard. The unit cannot easily be resold or transferred to another region. For example, a laptop with a US keyboard layout does not have the key and so is not useful in the UK.</p>

<p>Statement of Invention:</p>

<p>This invention is a laptop/notebook computer with a modular keyboard.</p>

<p>The keyboard can be removed from the main computer unit with a simple release mechanism. It may then be used separately from the main unit, connected either by a cable (e.g. USB) or using wireless communication (e.g. Bluetooth(RTh)) Advantages: I. Ergonomics: The modular keyboard can be positioned optimally for the user's shoulders, wrists and hands. The main unit can be position at the correct height for neck and eye level and at the correct distance to avoid eye strain.</p>

<p>2. The same laptop/notebook computer (minus the removable keyboard) can be manufactured for any region/market. Customers can purchase the combination of computer and keyboard they require.</p>

<p>3. Corporate customers can purchase a standard laptop/notebook computer, knowing they can easily replace the keyboard module if the computer will be used in another region with a different keyboard layout.</p>

<p>4. Damaged keyboards can be replaced without requiring expensive repairs and loss of use of computer during repair time.</p>

<p>The modular keyboard can be a "fashion accessory", so users can personalize their laptop with a keyboard emblazoned with designs or logos. This can be exploited as a marketing opportunity for major brands.</p>

<p>6. An optional numeric keypad can be clipped on to the side of the modular keyboard to extend the functionality to that of a full-sized external keyboard.</p>

<p>Detailed Description:</p>

<p>The laptop/notebook computer with modular keyboard has a keyboard which can be removed from the main unit and used separately.</p>

<p>Figure 1 shows a view from above of the modular keyboard (1) when attached to the main computer unit (2). Note that the computer may be used with the keyboard attached, just as with a conventional laptop computer.</p>

<p>The keyboard is released from the main unit by pressing (3) and (4) to disengage the keyboard locking latches.</p>

<p>The user then lifts the keyboard out of the main unit.</p>

<p>To re-attach the keyboard, the user slides in the keyboard -connecting the communications port -and presses down to engage the locking latches which hold the keyboard in place.</p>

<p>Figure 2 shows a view from above of the main unit (2) and the keyboard (1) positioned separately and ready for use.</p>

<p>In this example, the keyboard is connected to the main unit by a cable (7).</p>

<p>Optionally, a numeric keypad (3) can be clipped on to the side of the keyboard.</p>

<p>Optionally, wristpad(s) (4) can be clipped on to the front of the keyboard for improved comfort.</p>

<p>Optionally, a touchpad or trackball unit (5) can be clipped on to the front of the keyboard for improved comfort.</p>

<p>This example also shows a standard USB mouse (8) which can be used with the keyboard module.</p>

<p>Figure 3 shows a side view of the modular keyboard. Extension feet (1) may be opened out to adjust the angle of the keyboard for more comfortable use.</p>

<p>The feet and base of the unit have non-slip pads (2) to prevent the keyboard from slipping on the surface.</p>

<p>Optionally, wristpad(s) (3) can be clipped on to the front of the keyboard for improved comfort.</p>

<p>The removable modular laptop keyboard solves the problems of poor ergonomics in using the conventional laptop computer. This laptop/keyboard, when used with an external pointing device such as a mouse, touchpad or trackball, becomes as comfortable to use as a desktop computer with external monitor and keyboard.</p>

<p>The user does not need to carry around a bulky external keyboard, so this design is just as portable as a conventional laptop.</p>

<p>When removed from the main computer unit, the keyboard module is either connected using a cable (e.g. USB), or using wireless communication (e.g. BluctoothTM).</p>

<p>The design can be adapted for any widely used communications protocol.</p>

<p>The main manufacturing requirement for the keyboard module is that it must be thin and durable, so that it can be used either The laptop itself will be manufactured with a keyboard bay instead of a fixed internal keyboard. The communications port on the keyboard must connect to the communications port of the laptop when the keyboard is located in the keyboard bay and the locking latches engaged.</p>

<p>Since the keyboard basically occupies the same space as in a conventional laptop, most of the manufacturing process of the laptop should not require modification.</p>

<p>The keyboard can be manufactured in all the regional language and layout variations, and any of these regional variations can be inserted into and used with the same main laptop unit without any firmware or hardware modifications.</p>

<p>Other useful optional attachments can be manufactured to enhance the performance and functionality of the removable modular keyboard -numeric keypad, wristpads, trackball, and touchpad.</p>

Claims (1)

  1. <p>Claims: 1. A laptop computer with modular keyboard has a keyboard that
    can be removed from the main computer unit with a simple release mechanism, and may then be used separately from the main unit, connected either by a cable or using wireless communication.</p>
    <p>2. In addition to claim 1, a laptop computer with modular keyboard can also be used with the keyboard located in the laptop's keyboard bay, in the manner of a conventional laptop computer.</p>
    <p>3. A laptop computer with modular keyboard according to claim I can accommodate any regional language or keyboard layout variant of existing standard computer keyboards in the same main laptop unit without any firmware or hardware modifications.</p>
