Abstract

Weightlifting apparatus includes first and second substantially horizontal spotting arms (30, 40) spaced apart for supporting the bar (102) of a barbell (100). The first and secondspotting anns (30, 40) are capable of vertical motion, preferably independently. The arms may be controlled to operate in an assistance mode in which the spotting arms engage the barbell to assist in lifting the barbell; and the spotting arms are arranged to allow the barbell to roll freely horizontally over the spotting arms when the spotting arms are in contact with the barbell in the assistance mode. This can prevent injury.
