Abstract

A device for dispensing cylindrical or multi-sided rods comprises a hopper, the lower section of which narrows so that only one rod can pass and a bridge breaker mechanism which prevents the formation of a bridge of rods at the point where the hopper narrows. The bridge breaker mechanism comprises an actuator <B>A</B> and a spring strip <B>F</B>. The actuator <B>A</B> pushes the strip <B>F</B> which raises the strip <B>F</B>, on the release of the actuator <B>A</B>, the rods are allowed to fall. The device may have a catcher mechanism <B>G</B> which holds a rod in position until a ejector mechanism <B>B</B> dispenses the rod. A photocell switch <B>E</B> may activate a valve/relay <B>C</B> which operates the bridge breaker mechanism <B>A</B>. A pulsed input from a switching device can be used to activate the devices pneumatic or electronic circuits. The device may be used to dispense pens or pencils.

CYLINDRICAL ROD FEEDER
This invention relates to a device for the automated feeding of multisided or cylindrical rod shaped objects.
This device consists of a hopper which is filled with rods that have a cylindrical type of cross-section.
Normally the use of a hopper for dispensing this type of object will jam up at the narrow section due to the rods forirnng a bridge at this point, this hopper consists of a device that prevents a bridge by raising or lowering one or more rods by a "bridge breaker mechanism" which allows the rods to fall into the narrow section of the hopper,a number of single rods then fill the narrow section the lowest rod is then held in place by a catcher mechanism,until an ejector mechanism is use to eject the rod out of the hopper,the next rod then enters the catcher mechanism ready for the next cycle.
The hopper section has a number of adjustments to allow for different rod size and shape, this is done by using baffle plates which can be fixed or adjustable to allow for various shapes to be fed.
The hoppers "bridge breaker mechanism" is a device for raising or lowering the rods this can be a linear or rotary actuator which operates a spring strip that is attached to the upper part of the hopper the strip is then moved in and out by the actuator to control the feeding of the rods.
The "catcher mechanism" is a section of the hopper that retains the rods in the hopper by the use of a retaining strip this can be of a brush/spring or rubber strip type.
The "ejector mechanism" is a device to expel the rod out of the catcher mechanism this can be a pnuematic or electrically operated linear actuator.
A form of switch,tinier or sensor is used to activate the feeder,for the puipose of placement or the positioning of the expelled rods.
Description of operation (SEE DRAWING)
Photocell/switch (E) when activated operates valve/relay (C) which operates the "Bridge Breaker mechanism" (A) actuator & (F) spring strip, this allows the rods in hopper (I)) to fall into the narrow section,they are then held in position by a "Catcher mechanism" (G), the "Ejector" (B) then dispenses the rods (H) out of the "Catcher" the next rod then falls into "Catcher" ready for the next cycle of operation.

1. A cylindrical rod feeder is a device for dispensing rod shaped objects that have multi-sided or cylindrical type of cross-section and has the ability to correct blockages that may occur in the feeders narrow section it can also have a mechanism for holding and ejecting single items out of the feeder.
2. This device can be a stand-alone or machine attachment device used for the purpose of automating the process of dispensing objects according to claim 1
3. A cylindrical rod feeder has a linear or rotaiy mechanism that corrects blockages at the narrow section of the hopper to allow the items to enter the narrow section of the feeder for the dispensing purposes of the objects according to claim 1.
4. A cylindrical rod feeder can have a optional catcher mechanism if single items are required from the feeder, the catcher mechanism holds the object in position till its ready to be dispensed from the hopper.
5. A cylindrical rod feeder can have a optional ejector mechanism which is used to dispense the object out of the hoppers catcher mechanism according to claim 4.
6. A pulsed input from a switching device can be is used to activate the feeders pnuematic/electronic circuits that operate the unblocking mechanism according to claim 3 and or the ejector mechanism according to claim 5.
