Abstract

A worktop joint assembly comprising a bolt 3 held in a slot formed in the underside of a worktop. The bolt 3 may be held in place by clips 1, 2 provided on each end of the bolt. A nut 5 may also be provided on one end of the bolt, which may be tightened to clamp the assembly in position. The clips 1, 2 may comprise arms that press against the wall of the slot to hold the bolt in position and prevent the bolt from rotating. This enables one-handed operation of the bolt.

CLIP BOLT
The invention relates to a development of a bolt that it used in the assembly of joining materials, mainly worktop joints.
When worktops are being installed and fixed together the need often arises to secure the two pieces of material together using a flush joint. This is done by cutting slots into the underside of the ends of the worktops. [See figure 4.] This invention relates to the method of using the connecting bolt. When installing the bolts it is often underneath a pre-cut worktop and involves working around a pre- installed carcass. This makes the process of tightening the bolt very difficult, as the bolt will naturally fall with gravity out of the slots and requires the use of both hands to be tightened and to stop the bolt from rotating.
The object of this invention is that the 'clip bolt' will hold itself in the slot in the underside of the worktop and this will allow one-handed operation of the bolt and will make the process of clamping the worktop a lot easier and much quicker.
These bolts should preferably be made from steel but may be made from any metal, type of wood or plastic. The clips should preferably be made from glass re-enforced plastic but may be made out of any metal, plastic or type of wood.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with the assistance and reference to diagrams.
FIGURE 1 shows a top view of the 2 clips, bolt, washer and nut.
FIGURE 2 shows an isometric view of the two clips (1 + 2).
FIGURE 3 shows how the clip holds the bolt in position.
FIGURE 4 shows the 'clip bolt' within a worktopjoining slot to demonstrate the operation.
As shown in figure 1 the bolt consists of a central bolt (3) with two clips (1+2) on either end, which enables the bolt assembly to fit within the bolt slot, both self- centring and self retaining in the underside of the worktop.
Both clips (1 + 2) have a slot in the top (6) to enable the bolt to be held securely.
See figure 3. This prevents the bolt becoming loose during operation and also prevents the bolt from rotating during tightening.
Once a bolt slot has been routed using a suitable worktop jig or other such device the 'clip bolt' can be pushed into the slot on the first clip (6). Next the 'clip bolt' can be pushed into the bolt slot allowing the small clips (7) on the edge of the 'clip bolt' to push against the outside of the slot and retain itself within the slot. Finally tighten up the nut (5) on the end of the bolt to clamp the whole assembly and worktops in position.

Claims (3)

1 A form of connecting bolt that holds itself in a pre-defined slot in the underside of a worktop joint.
2 A device, as in claim 1, where the bolt is held in position by some sort of retaining device.
3 A device as in claim 2 where the clips have small arms to press against the wall of the slot to hold the bolt in position.
