Abstract

A registration plate for a vehicle comprises a subdivided box with partitions for storage of tiles bearing alternative letters and numbers. Windows are provided in the box for the display of a selected letter or number which can be interchanged as required. The box may be lockable and may be hinged to a back plate which is provided with holes for mounting to the vehicle and a lid. By means of the hinge the box maybe tilted forward to allow easy access to the partitions for changing the number on the license plate. A reflective yellow background may be provided.

This invention relates to an interchangeable trailer registration plate INTERPLATE.
iBackgroundl
Registration plates are an essential part of any vehicle - a legal requirement. Any trailer being towed must have an identical registration plate to that of its towing vehicle if it is on a public road.
Very often you can observe trailers being towed illegally ie. not carrying a matching plate. The main reason being that trailers are often used for more than that one vehicle: (a) Commercial plant hire/ private hire.
(b) Colleges and Universities.
(c) Farmers.
(d) Domestic trailers.
(e) Clubs/ organizations.
(I) Caravans.
(g) Articulated transport.
(h) Owners buying a new vehicle and not trailer.
An attempt to overcome this problem is often made through makeshift plates, which are invariably illegible or fall off and are as such illegal.
Others are specifically designed Ed made but are inconvenient, difficult to attach and of no use in the situation where a trailer is being used by more than one party. I-Ience people do not bother with this option.

"Essential Technical Features1 According to the present invention there is provided an interchangeable registration plate comprising a subdivided and clearly labelled boxed cavity for storage of alternative letters and numbers, a lockable facility providing security against alteration of the plate through a combination or key lock, reflective yellow background, individual transparent tiles with black letters and numbers, seven individual slots for these tiles, a boxed unit which hinges forward from a mountable fixed back-plate incorporating the lid, the following tile options: numbers 0-9 inclusive having three tiles each; letters A-Z (excluding I and O) all having three tiles each, except Q with one tile, thus making the total number of tiles 103.

A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Drawing shows in perspective the Interplate hinged forward off its back-plate, unlocked, providing access to tiles.
Referring to the drawing, the Interplate comprises a back-plate incorporating the lid with mounting holes. The storage facility is in the form of a box that is releasable and secured to the back-plate by, for example, a combination or key lock.
In order to change the configuration of the registration plate, the lock would be released, the unit would be hinged forward manually to expose the divided storage unit for the tiles and access to the individual front tile retainers would be achieved. This would facilitate the re- configuration o the registration plate through manual selection of the required tiles. The hinging mechanism has a limit stop to prevent the tiles falling out when unit is hinged forward.

Claims (1)

  1. Claims (1) An interchangeable registration plate allowing for any number
    of vehicles being legally able to tow any trailer without the need for removal and replacement of an alternative registration plate, comprising hinged and lockable storage facilities (with added limit stop) for transparent numbered and lettered tiles.
    (2) An interchangeable registration plate as claimed in Claim 1, wherein tiles are with black digits or lettering.
    (3) An interchangeable registration plate as claimed in Claim I and 2, wherein a combination or key lock provides security against theft or alteration of the configuration of the registration plate.
    (4) An interchangeable registration plate as clamed in Claim 1-3, wherein the storage unit tilts forward by means of a lower hinge mechanism allowing access to the individual front tile retainers.
    (5) An interchangeable registration plate as claimed in Claiml -4, wherein a limit stop is incorporated into the hinge, ensuring prevention of unit tilting too far forward, meaning a loss of tiles.
