Abstract

A sun visor for a vehicle, the visor having two separate leaf elements A1, B1 which provide the driver with simultaneous frontal and lateral glare protection. At least one of the leaf elements B1 is pivotally mounted for horizontal rotation through 90 degrees from a position parallel with the front windscreen to a position parallel with a side window. One of the leaves may be provided with a sliding or hinged downward extension A2 which may be made of plastic with a polarising effect The other leaf may have a sliding or hinged lateral extension B2. The surface of a leaf may support a document pocket or vanity mirror. Both leaves may be pivotally mounted for movement about a vertical axis from a position within the front windscreen to a position in which both leaves are within a side window.

VEHICLE SUN VISOR WHICH SHIELDS FROM FRONT AND
SIDE GLARE SIMULTANEOUSLY
The current design for Sun Visors is a leaf suspended on a swivel hinge on its' outer side which can be lowered across the windscreen or swung through 90 degrees to cut out glare from the side window. In this position it is normally too short to protect adequately the side of the user's head.
Repeatedly changing the visor's position can be dangerous, especially on winding roads.
My present invention provides twin hinged leaves to protect from front and side glare simultaneously.
The leaf shielding the windscreen includes a hinged or downwards sliding extension for better protection of users of shorter stature.
The leaf shielding the side window includes a hinged or sliding horizontal extension better to protect the side of the user's head.
The extensions may be opaque or semi-transparent or Polaroid plastic sheet.
The invention will now be described with reference to the drawing: Leaf A1 is the base leaf which is supported,as in existing designs, by a balland-socket swivel on the pillar side of the vehicle roof and a clip above the rear view mirror.
Leaf B1 is attached to A1 by a hinge down its' outer vertical edge, so that it may be swung through 90 degrees. It is attached to the said hinge by a friction swivel which allows it to be opened out horizontally, irrespective of the declination of leaf A1.
B2 is a longitudinal leaf which slides in grooves in leaf B1,or is hinged to it to extend horizontally to the full length of the vehicle door window.
A2 is a leaf that slides downwards in grooves in leaf A1 or is hinged to it to provide better forward glare protection for users of shorter stature. It may be opaque or semi-transparent plastic or Polaroid plastic to reduce glare from the road. \ 2.

Claims (5)

1) A vehicle sun visor comprising two broadly equal-sized leaves one of which may be hinged horizontally through 90 degrees to shield the user from sun penetrating the side window while the other remains in the windscreen.
2) A vehicle sun visor as claimed in Claim 1 wherein leaf A is provided with a sliding or hinged downward extension which may be opaque or semitransparent or Polaroid plastic sheet.
3) A vehicle sun visor as claimed in Claim s1 and 2 wherein leaf B is provided with a sliding or hinged horizontal extension.
4) A vehicle sun visor as claimed in Claims 1,2 and 3 wherein the outer surface may support a make-up mirror and document pocket.
5) A vehicle sun visor as claimed in Claims 1,2,3 and 4 wherein both leaves may be rotated together through 90 degrees to provide side protection only.
