Abstract

A squat position detector includes a means of emitting a beam of light, a means of detecting the beam of light, a means of indicating when the light beam has been obstructed and a means of positioning the light emission and light detection devices. The light emission and light detection devices are mounted separately in free-standing tubular constructions 1,7,10 that allow the height of the light beam to be adjusted by the user. The length of the beam may be adjusted by moving the two halves of the device towards or away from each other. Breaking of the beam ideally produces an audible signal detectable by the user.

Description

SQUAT POSITION DETECTOR
DESCRIPTION
The invention relates to a device which provides a means of detecting the position of the body or parts thereof during exercise.
A leg exercise commonly used by people doing weight-training is the squat. Typically a barbell is placed across the shoulders and the person lowers themselves until their upper thighs are parallel with the floor. Then the person rises again from this position. However, judging when the thighs have reached the desired position can often be difficult. Many weighttrainers may get knee injuries from squatting too low or fail to develop to their full potential due to not squatting deeply enough.
An object of this invention is to provide a means of detecting and indicating when the desired squat depth has been reached. The essential features of the invention include; a means of emitting a beam of light, a means of detecting the beam of light, a means of indicating when the light beam has been obstructed and a means of positioning the light emission and light detection devices.
Preferably the main body of the device is constructed from a robust material such as metal. It may also be constructed from plastic. The device should ideally be battery powered. An audible signal is envisaged, but not essential. For example if a weight-trainer was deaf a variant producing a visual signal could be made. The two sides of the device may be physically connected to facilitate alignment between the light emitter and light detector.
A preferred embodiment ofthe invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which; FIGURE I shows an elevated view ofthe invention.
FIGURE 2 shows a longitudinal section through one upper part of the invention, showing the electronics and battery arrangements.
As shown in Figure I, this embodiment of the invention consists of two separate halves. Each half has the same external construction, consisting of box section tubes. The top sections I and A, contain the electronics that produce or detect an infrared light beam respectively. One side contains the light emitter and the other side contains the light detector and audible indicator.
To simplify the description, the following refers only to one half of the device, but describes equally the opposing half of the invention.
Section I has a hole 2, in the side of the tube near the top to permit the passage of the infrared light beam. Section I also has holes 3, at intervals down the front of the tube for the insertion of pin 4. This allows the adjustment of the height of section 1 relative to the base of the device I 1. The top end of section I is enclosed by endcap 5, into which is inserted switch 6 that activates the electronics.
Section I is inserted into another box section tube 7, of internal dimensions that allow the section 1 to slide up and down easily. The middle section 7, has holes X, and a pin 9, allowing height adjustment relative to the base I I of the device.
The middle section 7, is inserted into another box section tube 10, of internal dimensions such that section 7 can slide up and down easily. This bottom section 10 is attached to a base 11 of the same material from which section 10 is constructed. Base I I is of sufficient thickness so as not to flex under the weight of the device.
Figure 2 shows a longitudinal section through top sections I or A. The tube is enclosed at both ends by endcaps 5 and 12. The upper endcap 5 contains a switch 6 which is used to turn on the electronics. Attached to the upper endcap 5, enclosed within the tube I or A, is an electronic device 13. This consists of either an infrared light emitter or infrared light detector and audible indicator arrangement. Tube I of one half of the device contains an emitter and therefore the opposing half A contains the appropriate detection and indicating mechanism. Tubes I and A have an aperture 2 that allows the passage of the light beam. Extending down tubes I and A are wires 14connectingtheelectronics 13 with thebattery 15.
