Abstract

A label has a plurality of laminated layers adhered to one another. The layers comprise a layer 14 having magnetic properties sandwiched and adhered 36 to a first layer 12 to whose surface remote from the magnetic layer print can be applied, and a second layer 16 whose surface remote from the magnetic layer is coated with an adhesive 44. The second layer is releasably adhered 40 to the magnetic layer. The top of the second layer 16 may also be printed with a design so that it can serve as a separate adhesive label, when the adhesively-joined layers 12 and 14 are detached to be used as a fridge magnet.

Description

A LABEL
The present invention relates to a label and more specifically, to a selfadhesive laminated label.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a laminated label comprising a layer of magnetic material interposed between a first layer having a surface remote from the magnetic layer to which print can be applied, and a second layer having a surface, remote from the magnetic layer, having an adhesive coating thereon.
Preferably, the magnetic layer is flexible. Preferably still, all layers of the label are flexible.
Preferably, the top layer is permanently adhered to the middle layer.
Preferably still, the bottom layer is releasably adhered to the middle layer such that the bottom layer can be detached from the middle and top layers.
Preferably, the engagement surfaces of the bottom and middle layers may form a non-adhesive track to enable the bottom layer to be easily detached from the middle layer.
In another aspect, there is provided a label having a plurality of laminated layers adhered to one another, the layers comprising a layer having magnetic properties sandwiched and adhered to a first layer to whose surface remote from the magnetic layer print can be applied, and a second layer whose surface remote from the magnetic layer is coated with an adhesive, the second layer being releasably adhered to the magnetic layer. . . . .: :. :.: :.. : .
The label may include a non-adhesive web to which the adhesive coating of the second layer is releasably adhered.
The first layer is preferably permanently adhered to the magnetic layer.
According to a further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of manufacturing a label, the method comprising the steps of: forming a first layer of material and printing a design onto a top surface thereof; forming second layer of material and printing a design onto a bottom surface thereof; and locating a third layer of magnetic material between the bottom surface of the first layer and the top surface of the second layer and laminating the three layers together.
Preferably, the method further comprises the steps of: die cutting first, second and third layers; stripping waste matrix from the layers to produce a plurality of magnetic labels; and applying a silicone coated glassine backing to the bottom surfaces of the labels.
Preferably, the step of laminating the layers includes feeding webs of the material layers into a printing press.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic view of a label co.ns.tructed in accordance with the present invention Wowing the invidol lowers of the label; and Figure 2 is a schematic view of showing the different layers of the label of Figure 1 during the lamination process.
Referring first to Figure 1, the present invention comprises a laminated label 10 comprising three layers 12, 14, 16.
The first, top, layer 12 is made from a material to which print can be applied, for example paper. A design (not shown) may be applied to a top surface 18 of the first layer 12. The opposing, or bottom surface 20 of the first layer carries an adhesive.
The second, middle, layer 14 is made from flexible material having magnetic properties. The bottom surface 18 of the first layer 12 is permanently adhered to a top surface 22 of the second layer 14 by the adhesive covering the bottom surface 18 of the first layer. Backing paper (not shown) is used to cover the adhesive surface of the first layer 12 until the two layers are ready to be laminated together.
The third, bottom, layer 16 is also made from a material on which print can be applied, for example paper. A design (not shown) may be applied to a top surface 24 of the third layer 16. The top surface 24 carries a peelable or detachable adhesive to releasably adhere the top surface 24 of the third layer 16 to a bottom surface 26 of the second layer 14. A bottom surface 28 of the third layer 16 carries an adhesive.
The engaging surfaces of the second and third layers 14, 16, form a nonadhesive track to allow the third layer 16 to be fairly easily peeled away from the second layer 14.
The adhesive bottom surface 28 of the third layer 16 allows for the third layer 16 (and, when all the three layers are laminated together, the entire label) to be adhered to a product (Dot shqvn3. The first and second . . layers 12, 14 can then be released from the third layer 16 exposing the top surface 24 of the third layer 16 which may incorporate a design and the magnetic bottom surface 26 of the second layer 14. The first and second layers 12, 14 form a magnet suitable for location on a refrigerator
for example.
A method of producing a plurality of self-adhesive labels/fridge magnets will now be described with reference to Figure 2.
First, second and third webs 30, 14, 34 are formed. The first (top) web 30 comprises the first paper layer 12, a layer of permanent adhesive 36 and a silicone coated glassine release layer 38.
The second (middle) web is the magnetic second layer 14.
The third (bottom) web 34 comprises a silicone coated glassine release layer 40, a peelable adhesive layer 42, the third paper layer 16, a permanent adhesive layer 44 and a further silicone coated glassine release layer 46.
Firstly, designs are applied to the top surface 18 of the first paper layer 12 and the top surface 24 of third layer 16.
The three webs 30, 32, 34 are then simultaneously fed into a printing press.
The glassine release layer 38 is removed from the first web 30 to expose the adhesive layer 36, which is used to laminate the magnetic second layer 14.
The first glassine release layer 40 is removed from the second web 32 to expose the peelable adhesive layer 42 which is used to laminate the magnetic second layer 14. . : . . . . 2. . .. : The first, second and third layers 12, 14, 16 are then fed through a die cutting station. Any waste is then stripped and removed to leave a succession of self-adhesive labels/magnets 10 held on a glassine release layer 46.
The above described embodiments have been given by way of example only, and the skilled reader will naturally appreciate that many variations could be made thereto without departing from the scope of the present invention.
