Description

1 2406609
RETAINING DEVICE
The invention relates to a retaining device.
In a particular problem addressed by the invention it is required to retain pipes and/or cables in order to limit the movement of the pipes and/or cables relative to a mechanical device associated with the pipes and/or cables. Conventionally this is achieved by employing some suitable clipping arrangement, such as a broomhandle clip, a "P" clip or a "3 piece" clip.
A broomhandle clip retains pipes and/or cables in a region defined by two resilient members. The broomhandle clip must be sized such that the retaining region is of substantially the same size and shape as the pipes and/or cables being retained in order to prevent the pipes and/or cables coming free when subjected to vibration loads.
Both the "P" clip and "3 piece" clip retain pipes and/or cables in a region defined by a retaining portion having a substantially circular cross-section. Both types of clips are clamped tight by a nut and bolt.
Hence while the pipes and/or cables are less likely to come free, the fitting of such clips may be time consuming, necessitates the use of at least one tool and requires a user to employ both hands in order to assemble and disassemble the clipping arrangement.
This is clearly inconvenient if the clipping arrangement is located in a region with limited access or the user requires one hand in order to perform a concurrent operation, such as, by way of non limiting example, holding open an access panel or supporting the cables and/or pipes to be released.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a retaining device comprising relatively moveable first and second members; said first and second members being interconnected by a third member; said first and second members each having a free end; both first and second members being formed with a resilient arcuate portion along i - 2 at least part of their length substantially towards the free end and configured such that the arcuate portions provide a biased spring loading towards each other and towards the third member.
Preferably the third member provides a biased spring loading for the first and second members such that the first and second members are biased towards each other.
Preferably at least one of the first, second or third members has a mounting feature as part of its form configured such that the retaining device can be mounted to another device.
The invention provides a means for restraining pipes and/or cables in order to limit the movement of the pipes and/or cables relative to a mechanical device associated with the pipes and/or cables.
The invention requires a positive action on behalf of a user in order to insert the pipes and/or cables into the retaining device, and requires an equally positive action in order to remove the pipes/cables from the retaining device. The pipes and/or cables may be inserted "one handed" and neither the insertion nor removal of the pipes/cables requires an additional tool.
The invention and how it may be carried into practice will now be described with reference to, by way of non limiting example, embodiments illustrated in the accompanying figures in which: Figure 1 shows a crosssectional view of the retaining device; Figure 2 shows a perspective view of the retaining device as shown in Figure attached to a surface of a mechanical device; Figure 3 shows a perspective view of the present invention, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, restraining a pipes and/or cables; - 3 Figure 4 shows a cross- sectional view of the restraining device restraining a pipes and/or cables as shown in Figure 3; Figure 5 shows a cross-sectional view of the retaining device, as shown in figures 1 and 2, restraining two pipes and/or cables in accordance with the present invention; Figure 6 shows a cross-sectional view of an alternative embodiment of the retaining device in accordance with the present invention; Figure 7 shows a perspective view of an alternative embodiment of the retaining device in accordance with the present invention; Figure 8 shows a perspective view of the retaining device as shown in Figure 7 restraining a pipes and/or cables; Figure 9 shows a cross-sectional view of an alternative embodiment of the retaining device in accordance with the present invention.
Referring now to Figure 1 and Figure 2 a retaining device 10 comprises a first member 12 moveable relative to a second member 14, with both the first member 12 and second member 14 being joined to a third member 16. The third member 16 is formed with mounting features 18,20 such that the retaining device 10 can be mounted to a surface 22 of a mechanical device. The third member 16 also provides a biased spring loading for the first and second member 12,14. The first, second and third members 12,14,16 are resilient.
In a direction away from the third member 16 the first member 12 comprises a first arcuate (or "volute") portion 24. Likewise in a direction away from the third member 16 the second member comprises a second arcuate (or "volute") portion 26. Both the first i and second arcuate portions 24,26 are formed along at least part of the length of the first and second member 12,14 respectively.
In the particular embodiment presented in figure 1 and figure 2 the first and second arcuate portions 24,26 are coiled towards one another such that at their closest point the adjacent faces of the first and second arcuate portions, indicated at 28 and 30 respectively, are at a distance apart which is substantially less than the width of a pipes and/or cables to be retained.
In operation the insertion of a pipes and/or cables 32 into the retaining device 10 involves a user forcing the pipes and/or cables 32 between the adjacent faces 28,30, thereby forcing the first and second arcuate portions 24,26 of the first and second members 12,14 to move apart until the pipes and/or cables 32 comes into contact with the third member 16, as shown in Figure 3 and Figure 4. Once in this position the pipes and/or cables 32 is retained in the region indicated at "A" and defined by the first, second and third members 12,14,16. The resilience of the first and second members 12,14 forces the pipes and/or cables 32 against the third member 16, thereby retaining it in region "A".
The pipes and/or cables 32 may be removed from the retaining device 10 by forcing the pipes and/or cables 32 away from the third member 16, past the adjacent faces 28,30 of the first and second arcuate portions 24,26, thereby forcing the first and second members 12,14 apart until the pipes and/or cables 32 is released.
If it is required to restrain a second cable 34 as shown in Figure 5, it may be inserted by the same method. However, with more than one pipes and/or cables 32,34 retained in region "A" it will be appreciated that only one of the first and second members 12,14 may be in communication with each of the pipes/cable 32,34. However, since each pipes and/or cables 32,34 is in communication with each other, with one of the resilient members 12,14 and with the third member 16 the pipes and/or cables 32,34 will still be adequately restrained. - 5
In an alternative embodiment presented in Figure 6 a retaining device 36 in accordance with the present invention is configured to retain a member 38 which is of rectangular cross-section. The retaining device 36 is identical to the retaining device 10 as described above other than the first and second members 12,14 are positioned further apart. Integers common to retaining devices 10 and 36 have been labelled with the same integer numbers.
An alternative embodiment of the present invention is presented in Figure 7 and Figure 8. Integers common to the embodiments of the retaining device 10,36 and the embodiment presented in Figures 7 and 8 have been labelled with the same integer numbers. The retaining device 40 comprises a first member 42 moveable relative to a second member 44, with both the first member 42 and the second member 44 being joined to a third member 16. The third member 16 is mounted on a surface 22 of a mechanical device and also provides a biased spring loading for the first and second members 42,44. The first, second and third members 42,44,16 are resilient.
Travelling along the first member 42 in a direction away from where the first member 42 is joined to the third member 16, the first member comprises a portion 46 which extends in a direction substantially perpendicular to the third member 16 and then bends back towards the third member 16 to form an arcuate (or "volute") portion 48.
In a similar manner the second member 44 is formed with a portion 50 substantially perpendicular to the third member 16 before bending back towards the third member 16 to form an arcuate (or "volute") portion 52. In this particular embodiment the first and second arcuate portions 48,52 are bent towards each other such that at their closest point the adjacent faces of the first and second arcuate portions 46,52 indicated at 28 and 30 respectively, are at a distance apart which is substantially less than the width of the pipes and/or cables 32 to be retained.
It is believed that the more "funnel like" triangular lead in to the region "A" defined by the arcuate portions 48,52 (compared to those of the embodiments described previously) may provide for easier insertion of the pipes and/or cables 32. - 6
A cross sectional view of an alternative embodiment of the present invention is presented in Figure 9. Integers common to the embodiments of the retaining device 10,36,40 and the retaining device 54 presented in Figure 9 have been labelled with the same integer numbers, and except where necessary, will not be described further The retaining device 54 comprises a first member 56 moveable relative to a second member 58 with both the first member 56 and the second member 58 being joined by a third member 16. Travelling along the first member 56 in a direction away from where the first member 56 is joined to the third member 16 the first member 56 comprises a portion 60 which extends in a direction substantially perpendicular to the third member 16 and then bends back towards the third member 16 to form an arcuate portion 62, and then bends back on itself further to end the member 56 with a flat portion 64.
In a similar manner the second member 58 is formed with a portion 66 substantially perpendicular to the third member 16 before bending back towards the third member 16 to form an arcuate portion 68 and then bent back on itself further to end the member 58 with a flat portion 70. In a particular embodiment the first and second arcuate portions 56,58 are configured such that they are bent towards each other such that at their closest point the adjacent faces of the first and second arcuate portions 56,58 indicated at 28 and 30 respectively are at a distance apart which is substantially less than the width of the pipes and/or cables to be retained.
The invention provides a means for restraining pipes/cables 32,34,38 in order to limit the movement of the pipes/cables 32,34,38 relative to the surface 22 of a mechanical device. The invention requires a positive action on behalf of a user in order to insert the pipes/cables 32,34,38 into region "A" of the retaining device 10,36,40,54. It also requires a positive action on behalf of the user to remove the pipes/cables 32,34,38 from the retaining device 10,36,40,54. - 7
It will be appreciated that the pipes/cables 32,34,38 may be inserted into a removed from the retaining device 10,36,40,54 "one handed" and its operation does not require the use of an additional tool.
It will also be appreciated that the first, second and third members of all of the embodiments herein described need not all be resilient in order for the invention to work. It will also be appreciated that the resilience may be provided by an additional resilient member in communication with one of more of the first, second or third members by some suitable method.
It will be appreciated that the retaining device may be employed to retain a plurality of difference sizes and shapes of cables, pipes or members.
It will be appreciated that the invention may be employed in any suitable application, including but not limited to an engine or a gas turbine engine.
The configurations shown in the accompanying figures are diagrammatic. The design of the elements comprising the invention may vary between designs. Likewise the configurations and relative positioning of the described components may differ in different embodiments of the invention. - 8
