Abstract

A wall for a building comprising a support structure and plaster material (1) applied to at least one of the opposite sides of the support structure, the support structure comprising an alternating plurality of planar (2, 4) and corrugated (3) sheets of paper. The surfaces of the support structure to which plaster material is applied are preferably waterproof. The invention also covers a method of forming a wall in a building involving arranging in the building a support structure of the wall, which support structure comprises an alternating plurality of planar and corrugated sheets of paper, and applying plaster material to at least one opposite side of the support structure.

Description

WALL FOR A BUILDING
This invention relates to a wall for a building, for example an internal permanent partition wall, and to a method of providing such a wall for a building.
A conventional partition wall is formed from a support structure comprising two rigid sheets of plasterboard connected together by wooden studs. Each outer face of the plasterboards is then normally coated with a screed of plaster material to provide the finished wall.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a lightweight and inexpensive alternative to a conventional wall.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a wall Ior a building comprising a support structure and plaster material applied to at least one of the opposite sides of the support structure, the support structure comprising an alternating plurality of planar and corrugated sheets of paper.
For a partition wall, plaster material would generally be applied to both of said opposite sides of the support structure. However in a wall, such as a ceiling or side wall, requiring only one side to be finished, the plaster material may be applied to only one of the opposite sides of the support structure.
The or each of said opposite sides of the support structure to which plaster material is applied may comprise a waterproof layer on which the plaster material is applied.
The or each waterproof layer may comprise a coating, film or foil applied on one of said planar sheets of paper. The provision of an outer waterproof layer or layers prevents the inner layers of the support structure from becoming damp when wet plaster material is applied.
The paper may comprise conventional paper used in the corrugating industry such as Kraft paper or Test paper.
The plaster material may comprise conventional pink plaster.
In one embodiment, all the corrugated sheets of paper are positioned between a pair of spaced apart ones of said planar sheets of paper. There may be at least five corrugated sheets of paper. At least one of the planar and/or corrugated sheets of paper may be coated with a fire retardant substance, e.g. sodium silicate.
Alternatively or additionally, at least one fire retardant foil may be located between the sheets of paper or between the paper and the plaster material.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a wall for a building comprising two outer layers of plaster material, and an alternating plurality of planar and corrugated sheets of paper located between said layers of plaster material and substantially parallel thereto.
] 5 According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of forming a wall in a building comprising arranging in the building a support structure of the wall comprising an alternating plurality of planar and corrugated sheets of paper and applying plaster material to at least one (preferably both) of opposite sides of the support structure. Preferably the or each outer surface of the support structure to which the plaster material is applied has a protective waterproof layer or coating.
The provision of a support structure of a wall made of layers of planar and corrugated paper ensures that the support structure is relatively light and easy to handle. It can be easily cut to shape and can be curved to a desired shape or form.
When fixed in position one or both of the opposite sides of the support structure is or are plastered in a conventional manner to form the finished wall. The various layers of the support structure can be made so as to have an enhanced level of fire protection by, for example, coating one or more layers with a fire retardant substance or by applying fire retardant foils thereto.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, reference will now be made, by way of example only, to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a schematic fragmentary view of a wall according to the invention.
The drawing shows layers of a finished wall comprising a layer of pink plaster 1 applied to a support structure comprising an outer planar sheet of paper 2 and successive corrugated sheets of paper 3 and planar sheets of paper 4 which are all bonded together. Whilst only two of corrugated sheets 3 and further planar sheets 4 are shown, in general the wall of the invention will comprise at least five of each of these sheets bonded together. A second layer of plaster (not shown) is applied to a final outer planar sheet of paper (not shown). The planar and corrugated sheets of paper are substantially parallel to the outer layers of plaster material.
The wall shown in the drawing is constructed in a building by fixing or otherwise arranging the support structure of the wall in position within the building. The support structure, made of bonded together layers of planar and corrugated paper, e.g. Kraft or Test paper or other paper common in the corrugating industry, is relatively light and can be easily cut to size and/or formed into a desired shape, e.g. into a curved form. When the support structure is so arranged, plaster material is applied in a screed to opposite sides of the support structure to form the finished wall.
In the example shown in the drawing, the outer sheets of planar paper 2 are coated with a fire retardant material. This coating could also be applied to some or all of the corrugated sheets 3 and/or the inner planar sheets 4. Alternatively, a fire retardant foil could be laminated to at least one of the planar sheets 2, 4. It is also preferred that outer surfaces of the outer sheets of planar paper should provide a waterproof or damp-proof layer to prevent damage to the inner layers of the support structure when the plaster material is applied in a wet condition. The waterproof layer may be a foil, e.g. the fire retardant foil referred to above, or any other suitable coating or layer known in the art.
According to a still further aspect of the present invention there is provided a support structure of a wall of a building, at least one of the opposite faces of the support structure being intended to have plaster material applied thereto in a finished wall, wherein the support structure comprises an alternating plurality of planar and corrugated sheets of paper.
All forms of the verb "to comprise" used in this specification have the meaning "to consist of or include". Whilst particular embodiments of the invention have been described above, modifications will be apparent which do not depart from the scope of the invention. s
