When the mechanical agitation stops, the formula reverses the holding mechanism and grease and oil are quickly rejected and coalesce to the surface where they can be skimmed. The mechanism can be considered a self-cleaning mechanism.

Description

NON-EMULSIFYING AQUEOUS CLEANER-DEGREASER
Description
This invention relates to a non-emulsifying aqueous cleaner-degreaser designed for use mainly in industrial applications.
Most aqueous detergent formulations are based on emulsification of grease and oils on site forming a stable emulsion. These emulsions are difficult to break, creating in many cases, a large volume of used cleaner that is hard to treat. Since most municipal wastewater treatment plants are sensitive to more than 10 ppm oil load in the waste cleaner, disposal of this waste material is very expensive and also shortens the tank life considerably.
The invention of this non-emulsifying formulation forms a temporary or transitory emulsion. It has the cleaning power of a strong emulsifying formula and works by lowering the surface tension between phases encouraging the formation of oil in water micelles, water in oil micelles or both.
There are several advantages to this invention: À TANK LIFE: The organic portion, which is mainly responsible for removing the oil and grease, remains constantly intact with minimal loss, subsequently extending the life of the solution. This minimizes the cost, as well as the man- hours and manpower needed to shut down the equipment for frequent solution changes.
À RE-DEPOSITION: The cleaner contains a selected additive capable of holding the soil and keeping it in suspension in the solution, preventing them from re- depositing on the parts. This will speed production process output.
À RUST INHIBITING: This is achieved simultaneously by two differing technologies. Specific cleaner components will create a static condition on the part surface, attracting another component to form a monomolecular film that will not interfere with any secondary operations.
À LOW SURFACE TENSION: These measurable functions highly enhance the cleaning capability and help the cleaner to WET, PENETRATE, and LIFT OIL and GREASE with high efficiency and fast action versus encapsulating (emulsifying) the grease and oil.
À HARD WATER PERFORMANCE: These formulations have a minimum sensitivity to calcium and magnesium and ferrous ions common in hard water.
Precipitation and deposition are minimized and rinsing improved. (No special water is needed; no added cost).
À DIRT LOAD FACTOR: Due to the self-cleaning mechanism, oil load capacity is excellent. The dispensed cleaner has less than 10 ppm oil. Less frequent changes of solution reduce hauling costs.
À HYDROLYSIS: The choice of ingredients produces a stable formula. Normal operating conditions for extended periods of time have no diverse effect on the cleaner or its function. There will be no hydrolysis, polymerization, separation or radical change in pH. Less frequent additions to solution keep it at peak performance.
À FLEXIBILITY & FOAMING: The formulations are capable of cleaning a wide range of contaminants & can be used in all process equipment with minimal or no foaming characteristics. May be used at room temperature or at slightly elevated temperatures resulting in less consumption of energy and high performance cleaning.
À USAGE: Reliability, repeatability & stability of the formulation makes them excellent performer for batch or continuous cleaning processes.

The organic portion (surfactant) can be a mixture of two or more of the following: - Phosphate ester (anionic surfactant): 12-20% - Anionic Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Dodocyl Sulfate: 12-20% - Non-ionic surfactant with modified polyexthylated straight chain alcohol: 12-20% - p-Tertiary - Octyloxy, Polyethyl alcohol: 10-18% - Sodium salt of Amphoteric surfactant: 10-18% Ethoxylated alcohols: 10-18% - benzene, 1,1 Oxybis, Tetrapropylene Sulfonate sodium salt: 12-20% The inorganic portion consists of different active and non-active ingredients in the same formula.
    - Dispersing agent to help disperse inert ingredients: 10-18% - A builder consisting of one or more of the following including Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Carbonate (soda ash), Sodium Metasilicate Pentahydrate, Anhydrous Sodium Silicate, Tetra-potassium Pyrophosphate, Potassium Tripolyphosphate or Trisodium Phosphate can be used: 5-10% - A sequestrant such as Sodium Hexametaphosphate: 15-20% By controlling the balance between all ingredients, especially the organic and inorganic portion, these formulations act as non-emulsifying cleaner/degreasers and will not permanently tie the oil and grease to the cleaner. When the mechanical agitation stops, the formula reverses the holding mechanism and grease and oil are quickly rejected and coalesce to the surface where they can be skimmed.
