Abstract

A tool for a medullary plug comprises a shank 21, handle 22 at one end of the shank 21, and a formation 23 of reduced diameter at the other end. The formation 23, is a press fit in a complementary aperture formed in the medullary plug. The press fit enables the plug to be accurately controlled and guided by the tool. A medullary plug comprising a relatively rigid centre and a plurality of individual leaves (11) radiating therefrom. The leaves can pivot from a substantially flat disc configuration to a condition in which they take up a frusto - conical configuration. The individual leaves lie in a partially overlapping relationship.

Description

1 2399016 Medullarv Plug Inserting Tool The present invention relates to
an insertion tool for a medullary canal plug The tool is intended particularly, but not exclusively, for a medullary canal plug of the cylindrical type described in British patent No GB 2,052,267B Although the insertion tool is not described in the specification of that patent, a tool has been used having a screwthreaded position at its lower end which may be screwed into a complementary screwthreaded aperture in the centre of the plug itself In use, however, the screwthreads wear leading to play between the tool and the plug and consequential lack of control It is an object of the invention to mitigate or eliminate these disadvantages.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided an insertion tool for inserting a medullary plug comprising a shank, a handle at one end of the shank and a part at the other end having a reduced diameter, the reduced diameter part being adapted to be a press fit in an aperture formed in the plug According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a medullary plug comprising a relatively rigid centre and a plurality of individual leaves radiating therefrom, the said leaves being so connected to the centre that they can pivot from a substantially flat disc configuration to a condition in which they take up a frusto-conical configuration in which the individual leaves lie in partially overlapping relationship m which the relatively rigid centre defines an aperture adapted to receive a complementary formation on an inserting tool with a press fit In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the tool and centre are made of high density polyethylene. Advantageously, more than one reduced diameter portion is provided of differing diameter each portion being a press fit in a correspondingly dimensioned aperture in the plug itself In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, one embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is a plan view of a medullary plug, Figure 2 is a side elevation of the plug of Figure 1 Figure 3 shows the plug of Figures I and 2 in position in the medullary canal of a bone, and Figure 4 is a view of an insertion tool for use with the plug As can be seen the plug comprises a centre 10 which is conveniently hemi spherical in form.
From the planar face of the centre 10 radiate a plurality of leaves 11 which, when the plug is not in use, lie in a common plane. It will be noted that the longitudinal edges 12 of the leaves 11 are inclined (see Figure 2 in particular) relative to the faces of the leaves and that in the region of the periphery 13 of the leaves the longitudinal edges 12 are contoured (as shown at 14) relative to the remainder of edges 12 so that, as will be explained below, the leaves 11 can be caused to overlap.
When the plug is being used it is placed over the end of the medullary canal 15 of a bone 16 and is pushed down the canal 15 by applying pressure to the centre 10 Pressure on the centre 10 by an inserting tool causes the leaves 11 to pivot about a joint line 17 with the centre 10 and take up a frusto conical configuration in which the leaves 11 overlap as shown in Figure 3 Overlapping of the leaves 11 is assisted and ensured by virtue of the angular disposition, relative to the faces, of the longitudinal edges 12 of the leaves 11 and also by the contouring of the peripheral region 14 of the ends of the leaves Since the plug leaves 11 are capable of independent movement relative to each other irregularity or change in the size of the medullary canal 15 can be compensated for by such relative movement of the leaves 11 and thus the plug can be moved to its requisite position in the canal 15 relatively easily It is envisaged that the plug will be made from rigid polyethylene and that for all uses a single size of plug can be produced It is fashioned on a machine The centre 10 defines an aperture 20 for receiving an inserting tool One form of tool is shown in Figure 4 The tool is made of surgical stainless steel and comprises a shank 21, a handle 22 at one end of the shank 21, and a formation 23 of reduced diameter at the other end which is complementary in shape to the aperture 20 The diameter of this reduced portion 23 and that of the aperture 20 are chosen so that the tool is a press fit in the aperture. This enables the medullary plug to be accurately controlled and guided by the inserting tool It will be appreciated that the above embodiment has been described by way of example only and that many variations are possible without departing from the scope of the invention.
